jon ralston.spite this column. what was your reaction at the time? >> well i was shocked, joe. i'd been with the "las vegas sun" since 2000. this was in august of 2012. nothing like this had ever happened. i got a phone call from my editor who said brian greenspun wasn't going to let the column run. a contentious phone conversation -- >> what did you say? >> i basically said what are you doing? i used words i'm not going to use this early in the morning, joe. >> yeah. >> and because i was furious. it never happened to me before there was no reason to kill the column. >> and what was the justification for spiking a column in the middle of an important campaign? >> his justification was totally lame. he didn't like the word "mccarthy" of course totally appropriate. in fact, then he dug himself a hole saying he had just used that word in a column about a republican, but that was okay. and then he said the tone was too harsh. it was just obvious that he was doing this to help his friend harry reid. he

>> john ralston is the host of ralston live on pbs and politico contributing editor and wrote about this in 2012. thanks for being here. you wrote a column calling out harry reid specifically and when you look back and read what you wrote, man, you had it deadon. and you submitted it to the las vegas sun and what happened? >> well, the first year in all the years i worked at the sun which was about 12 years megyn i got a call from my editor said brian greenspun wants to hold the article. obviously wanted harry reid to be protected. and spiked the column. i had a very contentious phone call shortly thereafter in which he gave me the lamest excuses for why he wasn't running it saying i shouldn't use the word mccarthy to describe reid and the tone was too harsh. even in that same conversation, megyn, he admitted to me that he had used the word mccarthy identityccarthyite in a column about -- which by the way was a very apt description. >> looking back this is what you wrote. this is about the comments he was making about romney's tactics. he'll do whatever it takes to win. his approach with

joining me in sparks nevada, is john ralston. on the romney tax returns trying to create so much pressure that the candidate has to release more of his tax records, he doesn't care about being criticized for using the same tactics that joe mccarthy used. first up why did you decide to publish this article now after the fact? >> i considered doing it before, alex. i'd already told people a long time ago shortly after i left "the las vegas sun" that i had written a column critical of reid that had been pulled. i thought of publishing it a couple of times on my own site. but then when i saw harry reid's interview in which he was completely unrepentant about having lied about mitt romney's taxes and said well romney lost, didn't he i said you know, this is the appropriate time. i guess it was just years of pent-up frustration. >> did this frustration include other columns critical of harry reid? >> no. as a matter of fact, this is the first time that brian greenspun who runs "the las vegas sun" killed any of my columns. he's very clo
