ramps to treasure island from the bay bridge are closed. it began before midnight police began chasing a suspect. amy hollyfield is live near the scene of the bay bridge. the problem is causing for people trying to get home and work later. >> reporter: that's right the concern this is going to cripple the commute into san francisco. here's what it looks like now. traffic moving okay. it is only 5:00 in the morning. we are on the upper deck, this is westbound traffic, you can see an officer there see those red flares? that's where the officer is blocking the ramp to treasure island. treasure island is on lock down, no one allowed on or off. this is because police are dealing with a man who is averaged and threatening suicide. police say he's already fired his gun once at police. officers are worried he will do it again and could hurt someone. they've got him sectioned off on treasure island at the shoreline at vista point before that guard house as you pull on to the island. police don't want anyone diving past him, they say it is too danger

he finally pulled over on the treasure island off-ramp.ow, this shut down treasure island for more than 6 hours. people could not get on or off. that man brandished his weapon and then held it to his head. a crisis negotiation team tried to get him to surrender and during that standoff police used two flash-bangs. again nobody was allowed on or off the island so some of those residents were assisted by the red cross at the transbay bus terminal. police believe that this was their suspect 29-year-old duncan philips. philips is also a suspect in a robbery that happened in benicia on tuesday. so again the standoff is over. people can finally get back on and off of treasure island. and earlier this morning, when this was all happening, it did not affect traffic even though the off-ramps were closed. at this point as people are coming into the city it's getting more congested but again, everything is back open. in san francisco, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >>> it didn't affect traffic on the bay bridge but it did go in and out of treasure island.
