martin was a scotsman who studied with alan ramsey and established a studio in london around 1757. franklin was in franklin in 1757 being celebrated for his publications on electricity. he returned again in 1764 and it was his testimony in the house of commons in 1766 that led to the repeal of the stamp act. at this time, he is perhaps the most famous american at home and abroad. this painting was commissioned by robert alexander, from the firm of william alexander and sons in edinburgh. tradition tells us that robert had a disputed claim to property. he and the other claimant agreed to refer the matter to franklin and abide by his decision. it must have gone very well for robert, which explains the commission. handocument in franklin's is actually one of alexander's deeds. it is not a government document. the artist also included in the upper left-hand side of bust of isaac newton, the greatest english voice of reason to oversee the scene. the painting was a gift in 19 62 by mr. and mrs. walter annenberg. he was an editor and publisher and later he was appointed ambassador to grea
