we see six police officers, chief ramsey, have been shot. we've just been told a minute ago that the suspect or suspects are still firing at police officers. this is still an active and ongoing situation. you know this area around temple university. tell us what you're hearing and what we should anticipate. >> well, i have spoken to some people. there are six officers shot. i'm told this is a sergeant that may have been assaulted near seep as well who was struck in the head. not by gun fire but by an individual. it my understanding, there may be a couple officers trapped inside the building itself with prisoners. the shooter is still very active. they don't know if there is one or two. the person could be moving around. i was told they think it could be two firing at officers. s.w.a.t. is on the scene now. they brought in the bear cat and the heavy equipment for added protection and they're developing a plan. one of the issues they had early on. i'm really, really glad to hear the way cnn is guarding against showing locations of the officers

we're joined now by charles ramsey.mself with long experience in law enforcement as police chief. chief ramsey, it's good to have you on today. i want to ask you -- >> thank you. >> -- as someone with such great experience in law enforcement what you are seeing here. the anti-defamation league, it says that attacks driven by white supremacy doubled in the last couple of years. the center for strategic international studies in washington, it found similar increases over the last decade. what do you see happening in this country, >> well, things are certainly getting worse. we're in a toxic environment now. the rhetoric you've heard on the part of many people, quite frankly, has really, i think, done a lot to spin things up a lot. but there has been a serious increase. this is a perfect example of it is el paso. it's very unfortunate, but it's very real. these websites that are out there, people being radicalized. as a result of those websites. and something has to be done about it. >> it's interesting when you describe t

chief ramsey, as you and i have been pointing out, the news is, unfortunately, tragically, only goinge as we get to more specifics. the number of fatalities and multiple fatalities and we are told those numbers are very significant. i assume there will be men, women and children who were murdered at this shopping mall on this saturday, just a week or so before the kids in el paso have to go back to school. >> yeah, it is tragic and when the doctor was speaking he mentioned the 2-year-old and we don't know if the 2-year-old was suffering from a gun shot wound or some other injury as a result of the chaos that occurs, it's highly unlikely that you'll have a situation where there were none that were seriously injured, unfortunately. only having one level one trauma center which is understandable, but we are blessed that we do have good hospital facilities in this country, and that certainly puts a huge strain on them and i'm sure they had to triage patients and they had to deal with a lot of different issues and he didn't mention whether or not they airlifted anyone to any other hospital

. >> cnn law enforcement analyst and former philadelphia police chief charles ramsey is joining us nowt just talk to us about the procedure of serving a warrant and all of this transpiring in this way. how unusual is this? >> well, serving a search warrant, first of all, is one of the most dangerous things you can do in policing because you never really know what's going to happen once you knock on the door and gain entry. this obviously turned out very violent pretty quickly. and the officers, at least one or two, sustained gunshot wounds almost immediately and were able to get some cover. there were a couple of officers who went upstairs to the other part of the house. they got trapped up there when the gunfire erupted. so it was a very, very violent situation and we were very fortunate that no one was killed, not the officers, not the suspect, innocent civilians. hundreds of shots were fired during this course. and remember, there was a child care center not far from there. 58 kids that had to shelter in place. my wife has done a lot of research on trauma with children that are expo

commissioner ramsey, we spoke an hour ago. the longer this goes on, what does that mean in terms of, does it change police strategy? do the odds start to change in favor of the police given they have night vision equipment? how does it aller things? >> the police will be very patient as long as they don't believe the two officers trapped inside are in eminent danger. that's very important. if they are, then, obviously, they have to take some kind of action. they'll continue to try to negotiate best they can over time. i learned that the officers involved in the search warrant were from our narcotics strike force, they deal with street-level type drugs. and some of those officers you saw running with shorts could very well have been strike force officers too. things are pretty much status quo. they don't know for sure if it's one or two shooters. they know, obviously, for sure, they got one. but the negotiators aren't able to make contact with guy. he's still not talking. pick up the phone, hang up, sort of situation which is n
