rancho romero had a signed the talked about concepts like gender identity and gender fluidity. some parents objected to it. stories about the sign went viral and got some social media attention. that may be how the group westboro baptist church found out about it. that candace based group has been listed -- kansas-based group has been listed as a hate group. wendy learned about this extremist group coming to the school, they decided to counter it with a non-engaging positive display of unity. it could be as many as 50 or more plan to stand around the school holding hands. they are also going to be carrying rainbow colored umbrellas. >> i'm an antidiscrimination attorney. we feel very strongly on everyone being treated equal and we want to make sure we send a message to the children that we love them regardless of who they are and we want to make sure they feel safe and comfortable going to their school. >> five members of this same extremist group westboro baptist church held a picket outside the church on sunday in walnut creek. in response, more than 150 members of the congre

but so far we are not seeing any protesters outside of rancho romero elementary school in alamo but it is westboro baptist church that is planning to do this protest in just a couple of hours over what they say are their disagreements with the school when it comes to a gender equality lesson plan, the school's stance on transgender issues, that's what's leading to this protest. this church was considered a controversial hate group in some senses, hating on both sides of the aisle, in fact, our newsroom did some digging overnight on some of the protests that they have had over the years. dating back to more than a decade at this point. we want to show you this point a list of them. in 1998 there was a protest margd matthew shepherd who was a gay man who was beat and tortured to beth:et in wyoming. then the group protested it he funeral of a u.s. marine killed in iraq, they were sued for that, but the supreme court sided with the church's right to protest in that case. and then most recently they also had protests in orlando following the pulse nightclub shooting. now, just yesterday i d

we're standing in front of rancho romero elementary school. westboro baptist church a controversial hate group is expected to protest in front of the school in a matter of hours citing their difference was a gender equality lesson plan that the school is promoting. that's information we're getting according to a facebook post. let's talk about this controversial history with this group. now, back in 1998 they protest matthew shepherd who was a day man who was beaten and tortured to death in wyoming and then in 2006 the group protested at the funeral of matthew snyder, a u.s. marine who was killed in iraq and they were sued for that, but the supreme court sided with the church's right to protest. they held protests in orlando following the pulse nightclub shooting. i did get a chance yesterday to reach out personally to the san ramon unified school district. in a statement they told me as far as repairing for this they told me their focus is on school and staff safety, they have a plan in a place and are working closely with law enforcement to

. >> reporter: the demonstrations happened in front of rancho elementary school this morning, these parents were shocked they would -- every day we have been on these streets for 27 years, 65 plus thousand pickets and this is a first grade school. >> reporter: this all started because of a bulletin board here at the school maintained by the pta's diversity and inclusion committee. january's theme was about gender identity and it included the unicorn as one of its members. >> this school is nationally known, delthey're fox news, for teaching their children, sitting them in these classrooms where they can't even read, with images and otherwise teaching them to rebel against god in every way. >> studies show that reaching down to younger kids can help expand their tolerance and acceptance of everybody's uniqueness and i think that's the intent. >> reporter: the church members said they were glad to see such a large turnout so they can get their message directly to their target audience. but no children were here. administrators delayed the start of school until 10:45 because they say safety is

police in fremont pull a car out of a pond at rancho arroyo park. witnesses told police thaey saw the car go into the water last night with at least one person inside. these are pictures from the scene. a dive team was called to the scene to help with the recovery. a witness told police that they saw a man swimming away from the scene. police believe that was the only person in the car that crashed. they say the car was driving reckless before it went into the water. ( james ) new this morning... firefighters respond to mineta san jose international airport over night after several people got sick on a delta airlines flight. the flight came in from minneapolis. passengers say it was a bumpy flight. a total of 7 people reported being sick. firefighters say two of those people were suffering from motion sickness. none of the passengers were taken to the hospital. ( james ) a man and woman are assaulted and robbed on the peninsula and the attacker is still ont eh loose. it happened wednesday night on the 400 block of "b" street in south san francisco.

the protest will target rancho romero elementary school in alamo. we're not sure why that school is being targeted. it may be because of her recent poster at the school that encourage discussion about sexual and gender identity. statement released by the school district says, quote, our primary concern is the safety of the students, staff, and parents. we have a plan in place to hopefully mitigate the protest at our school. on sunday, more than 150 members of a walnut creek church sang songs and held signs countering a protest i members of the westboro baptist church. it's not clear why the mount diablo universalist unitarian church was targeted for that protest. >>> one man is in custody after leading the chp on a chase. the chase started on the bay bridge when a yellow van marked black rock city public works drove into a construction zone. an officer was parked on the freeway to help protect the construction crews and reacted quickly when that van driver entered the cone zone. >> he, in fact, did endanger the workers in that zone and almost collid

scott road is a major artery between rancho murieta and folsom.so a lot of people use this road as artcut. but emergency personnel say it was closed at the time because of rising water concerns.capt. chris vestal/sacramento fire dept. "there are road closed signs on scott road. both directions north and south of this location." while the rescue was successful, officials say the driver had to escape out of a sunroof, and was luckycapt. chris vestal/sacramento fire dept. (steve)heavy rains caused localized flooding in several areas of sacramento today. conditions have cleared up and are expected to stay that way with some showers possible saturday. (pam) a federal judge is granting california's request... to question the director of ice .. it's all part of a lawsuit brought by the trump administration over the state's sanctuary laws. the order means the acting director thomas homan of ice... must be available to testify. california will be allowed to question him about allegations that three state laws

and it was closed over to rancho verde because of the standing water. and other creeks and tributaries overflowed their banks. there was one vehicle that they had to help assist to get out of the flooded roadway. we saw drivers trying to get the car out of the way without any success. we've seen drivers defy the road closure earlier this morning and drive right through the standing water. granted earlier this morning when there was more flooding in the roadway, the only vehicles we saw do that were trucks with a higher profile. but it's not a good idea and not recommended. it only takes a couple of inches of water to move a vehicle. in sonoma county there was a sig-alert issue for the road completely closed due to flooding. not uncommon for this intersection to flood like this and have road closures. there were several times last year and in previous winters when we saw a similar issue. the flash flood warning was from -- until 9:00 this morning. that has since expired but we are expecting on and off showers throughout the afternoon and some of the road

the fire started around one o'clock yesterday on rancho verde circle. under the home and from the top of the windows. they got the fire out in about 20 minutes. this is a picture from scene from the department of public safety. the american red cross is helping the the people who were living in the home. firefighters believe the fire started in or near the bathroom. ( darya ) a fire damages a home in the south bay. it broke out sunday morning on magenson terrace in los gatos. the garage burned down. fire fighters were able to put it out before it could spread to the home itself. everybody inside the home got out as soon as they smelled smoke. aren't sure yet the fire.
