randall pinkston, good to see you. let's talk first of all about this op ed in the new york times from russian president vladimir putin. how is the white house responding to that? president putin being an ally of syria doing what he can to avert any kind of military strike from the u.s. what is the u.s.'s reaction? >> putin has his own objectives and aims at heart and certainly not america's. we would like to be the fly on the wall for shall we say the unofficial reaction to what putin wrote but we do have a senior administration official telling us this morning that president putin has invested his credibility in transferring assad's chemical weapons to international control and ultimately are destroying them. if world will note whether russia can follow through on that commitment. and you don't have to really read through the lines here to see what the white house is saying, that now mr. putin its up to you to deliver what you promised, which is to gain international control of syria's weapons towards destroying them

randall pinkston joins us live. how will the republicans try to derail health care law. talk a blibled that. >> the first stage of this showdown at the okay corral. the fiscal year ends september 30th and if the congress does not pass a continuing resolution to keep things flowing then there will be a government shut down. so the republicans say they are willing to pass a continuing resolution but only if it strips funding from the affordable care act, house resolution 59. just moments ago, the president's office of management and budget has released a statement saying that if in fact the house passes joint resolution 59 he will veto about bill. that is to say, he will accept a shut down. of course, the republicans are going to blame it on president obama, president obama is counting on the fact that the voters will be looking at the republicans who have tried repeatedly to block obamacare for the past four years, five years. none of those efforts have succeeded not even at the supreme court. it is possible that at the last minute house speaker joan boehner will introduc

that's one possibility. >> ok, randall.awmakers were also facing the upcoming deadline to raise the debt ceiling. how does that complicate all of this? >> well, it's another complication in an already complicated picture. the government has a debt ceiling limit of about $16.7 trillion. that is to say that we borrowed that amount of money and we have to pay installment payments. if we don't extend that debt ceiling by mid october, the government defats. the last time the threat of a default happened, we saw the markets go into a tail spin. we saw all kind of bad things happening. president obama was telling the business round table that it makes no sense to put the government at that kind of jeopardy, when in fact in the past years, you just increase the debt ceiling, and go on with business. so, the republicans are saying they won't raise the debt ceiling unless they can get some reductions in spending, so we have another disagreement that is likely to result in a problem. >> i like how you put that, randall. >> yes. >> ran

first, as you heard randall mention - aaron alexis was treated for mental treatment. the reason is yet to be disclosed. in 2007 he received an honourable discharge from the army. he was arrested for two gun-related offences. in 2010 he was arrested when he shot through the it floor at a neighbour's apartment. >> he was not charged. >> mark schneider follows the story from texas. we have been reading reports on the gun-related arrests. any sense from the people there that he had violent tendencies or possibilities of mental illness? >> no, but there were certainly concerns because he had complained relatively recently after a trip to japan, where he was a naval contractor, that he wasn't getting paid regularly or as much as he thought he would. he was, indeed, angry with the government, but never made overthreats that any of his friends are aware of. >> we hear you have one of those friends with you now. can you tell us about that person? >> yes, i a mike here. we were talking about the word coming out today about aaron alexis having possibly some mental illness, maybe

can you talk a little bit, randall, about vote counting. i assume both sides are involved in that, and we're still days away from a vote. are you hearing anything? >> reporter: well, today there was a blow to president obama. a leading democrat, democrat joe manchin of west virginia said definitively that he will not support a resolution for use of force. other senators, democrats and republicans but significantly democrats are on the fence saying they have not made up their minds, and you heard one of the few moderate voices of the republican side in the senate, senator collins, talking about possible other means of dealing with syria. so this is by no means a foregone conclusion that the president will get the congressional support that he has said that he would like to have before launching a military action against syria. >> congress has a lot of other business to attend to, but talk about how this has captured the attention of lawmakers now. >> reporter: absolutely has captured the attention of lawmakers. the first hearing by the senat
