we bring in correspondent randall pinkston. and phil ittner in kiev. we are now understanding that there has been a travel ban put in the place for travel back and forth from russia. tell us what you know about that. >> this has just come out of the russian foreign ministry. their reaction to the increase in the sanctions program is to place a visa ban, a travel restriction on some high-ranking members of the u.s. political scene, including john boehner, harry reid and john mccain. there are other names on that list, but it is interesting to note they have not responded with the sanctions program as many feared they would. but instead, they are trying to restrict americans who might try and come over to moscow, even if they are trying to come for diplomatic means. so that has been the reaction so far. >> and mike, this has been the concern all along from the hawks on capitol hill who say the white house is not doing enough. we are involved in a diplomatic tit for at the russia has boots on the ground. crimea is part of russia and the eu and united stat

randall, thank you very much. meanwhile the families were given the news before that announcement was made today. they were called into a closed door meeting with malaysia air officials about an hour before the news conference. margaret ortigas has that story. >> the families were called into a meeting by malaysian officials in beijing about an hour before the prime minister of malaysia made the news public, this is influences that the relatives here had been waiting two weeks to not hear. they had been holding onto hope for that long that possibly the plane was hijacked or had gone down in some remote spot due to technical difficulties. they were really, really trying to hold onto that because it meant that possibly their relatives that were on that flight might still be alive. this is the last thing they wanted to hear. many of them distraught, some of them brought out on stretchers, some fainting. it is quite chaotic. some of the relatives stepped out, saying they needed to breathe. this last two weeks felt lik

randall why are these objects getting so much attention?> reporter: well, the picture of these objects were taken sunday by a french satellite. these objects were spread over 150-square mile area. we can see that the approximately 1500 miles southwest of perth, australia. the reason they are getting such attention is because they are located in the same grid where there have been other stat light sightings of debris. and all of that debris is in an area where search teams have been looking for the missing malaysian airlines flight 370. unfortunately so far none of the debris has been retrieved so we really don't know whether it is connected. >> it has been almost three weeks now, what are authorities saying about their failure to come up with anything conclusive? >> well, the authorities are saying that they are proceeding as best they can, given the information they have available. it took a while before everyone was fairly certain that the plane went down in the indian ocean, and they still don't know exactly where it fell, and so they ar

randall pinkston joins us from washington, d.c. do we have any details yet of the prime minister's visit? >> reporter: yes, morgan. the administration made it a point to spell out exactly the fact that the obama administration is supporting the new government of ukraine. it is symbolically significant that the president will welcome the new prime minister into the white house saying to russia the u.s. does not accept russia's contention that the old leader of ukraine is still the legitimate leader. meanwhile, however, russia is creating some facts on the ground of its own with their military forces. in fact, the former u.s. defense secretary roberts gates who served president obama and president bush says russia for all practical purposes has control of ukraine, and it's only the beginning. >> i think it's part of a long-term strategy on putin's part to re-create a russian sphere of influence and russian bloc. i don't think that he will stop in ukraine until there is a government in ukraine, in kiev that is essentially pro-russian.
