i'm randall pinkston.the house of representatives is voting right now over the iran nuclear deal. republicans are pushing back after a big win for the white house thursday. senate democrats blocked a resolution rejecting the deal, and now some in the house vow they will do everything they can to stop the agreement even threatening a lawsuit. libby casey is on capitol hill following the debate. libby what is happening right now? >> randall the house just finished voting on their first item of the day. this is to actually approve of the iran nuclear deal. republicans knew that wouldn't pass, but they wanted to put democrats in a defensive posture, and make them standing up and say i actively believe in this, i am voting to support it. here is the final tally, 162 members, all democrats voted to approve the deal, but 269 members voted to disapprove of it. and 25 democrats joined be republicans in that in fact. so this was really a symbolic vote. republicans especially wanted to do it today on the 14th anniver

i'm randall pinkston.ell, the senate is set to begin a critical vote in just a few hours over the iran nuclear deal. republicans are trying to force through a disapproval resolution, but senate democrats say they have enough to block that, and it could seal the deal for the president. >>> libby casey joins us live from washington. >> reporter: randall senate republicans are holding a procedural vote to end debate and move ahead on the disapproval vote. but democrats can filibuster, the real question is, will they? and no one seems to entirely know, even though democrats have enough in number, some have philosophically said they would like to see a bill come to the floor and have just an up or down vote. however, if that happens, republicans would win the day, so it's far more likely that democrats will stand together and filibuster this to block it. despite the democrat's advantage there is still strong debate happening on the floors of the house and senate. in the senate, you'll hear from first a republic

i'm randall pinkston. pope francis this morning begins the first full day of his trip to america. in just over an hour, a ceremony begins at the white house where we are expected to hear from the pope. france arrived tuesday at joint base andrews outside washington. president obama and vice president biden and their families were there to meet the president. right now, all the excitement is at the white house. thousands gathered on the south lawn for a ceremony filled with pomp and circumstance. mike viqueira is live outside the white house. give us details about the two hats the pope is wearing as like this leader and head of state. >> you're absolutely right, randall, he is the pastor to the world's 1.2 billion catholics, he's also here as an emissary between the catholic church and president of the united states. the president and pope francis met for the first time more than a year ago in march of 2014 at the vatican, mr. and mrs. obama visited there. a number of things are on the table. the white hous

this particular one is controversial. >> reporter: it is, randall. there's a lot that the catholic church is celebrating today. he was born more than 300 years ago, in spain, but came to present-day california, what was new spain, as a franciscan missionary and established nine of the 21 spanish missions. he will be the first hispanic-american saint, which is a big deal coming from the first latin american pope, to be giving this mass today. the controversial aspect is the way the missions worked. he converted more than 6,000 indigenous people, his mission, hundreds of thousands over time. while the indigenous people were not forced to convert, once they did, they were kept on the mission and not allowed to go back to their homes. some were even beaten or flogged when they left. that is why some native american groups are concerned about this and have protested his choice for this. as i mentioned, he is seen as a leading symbol of the missionary movement that has brought catholicism to the united states. more than 1/3 of catholics are hispanic. >> th

live from new york city, i'm randall pinkston. the house today begins debate over the ran nook deal. it is expected to be a fiery discussion, republicans trying to stop the agreement and force a presidential veto. democrats say they have the votes to block a resolution from reaching the president's desk. we are live in washington this morning. libby, the president now has 42 senators supporting the deal. does this mean that senate democrats will definitely filibuster to block any vote on the issue? >> as we know here in congress, nothing's done until it's really done. that 42 number is crucial for the white house because technically that is enough democrats to stop republicans from even bringing a disapproval resolution to the floor of the senate. we can't guarantee that all those democrats would agree to a filibuster. some would like to see open debate. what democrats really want is to just have a clean up or down vote with the 60 person threshold. republicans aren't exactly seven-day in that at this point, because they're ok wit

>> good morning, randall. it really is quite secure at this point, despite republicans trying to figure out a way they can win or gain some ground at this moment. as you mentioned, senate republicans hope to bring this up for a vote again next week but it's highly unlikely that any democrats now on the record would change their vote. for a senator to switch parties at this point seems really not likely. we heard some relief and gratitude from secretary of state john kerry, of course the chief u.s. negotiator. here's what he had to see yesterday. i'm grateful to the members of the senate who carefully reviewed the agreement and deliberated on its provisioning. this decision was extremely difficult, but i am convinced the benefits of the agreement far outweigh any potential draw back. we did hear strong discussion on the senate floor this past week, randall. they are still praising secretary kerry and the white house for their work. >> the vote was in the senate, what about the house? >> they are not done with w

. ♪ this is al jazeera america, live from new york city, i'm randall pinkston, pope francis now is intheast cuba in the city where fidel and brother rual castro grew up and celebrated mass this for tens of thousands of cubans, this is the first time a pope has ever visited the city and pope francis is credited with helping u.s. and cuba restart diplomatic relations after more than 50 years. david is live for us in havana and david i'm sure you have seen many incredible sights during your visit there watching the pope, such a busy day he has had, what has been most impressive for you? >> well, you know, i'm telling you it's hard to think of a more impressive sight than hundreds of thousands in havana and he is 150,000 gathering had gathered there and just the sheer numbers of people who turn out to see this pope, not only here in cuba but across the region and mexico and honduras and nicaragua and a pontiff coming to cuba with a new relationship between the united states and cuba so pope francis visiting here on basically in the wake of that new paradigm between these two countries and

as randall pinkston tells us her story is ties to the nation's struggle for civil rights. she was a local organizers oif first 1965 march to call for voting rights. >> i do remember from the beginning to the end. >> in an interview with al jazeera, several months before her death, she shared her memories of the day known as bloody sunday. when alabama state troopers bore down on protestors with tear gas and brute force. >> he hit me in the back of my neck. the back of my shoulders. and then the second hit fell me. and i fell to the ground. >> mrs. robinson was knocked unconscious, badly injured by the blows of troopers that looked on as fellow marchers carried her away. >> somebody came, and said to the state trooper, that somebody dead over there. and he said, somebody is dead if anybody is dead we are going to let the buzzards eat him. >> the images of the crack down brought change to the nation. and helped spur the passage of the voting rights act later that year. at the act signing by president lindon johnson, amelia uponton robinson was a guest of honor. 50 years late

. ♪ this is al jazeera america, good morning and live from new york city, i'm randall pinkston, a kentuckyrk who refuses to issue marriage licenses because of her religious beliefs faces a judge today, kim davis and her staff will appear in federal court to face contempt charges for davis' continued defiance of the law, she refuses to issue licenses to anyone to avoid giving them to gay couples and we have more at the woman at the center of the controversy. >> kim davis is hoping this federal judge will delay that court order so she can appeal a decision relating to an injunction that the governor filed. kim davis has been the center of controversy for many weeks here and to some she has become sort of a hero in rowan county. [chanting] before kim davis was at the epicenter of the battle over same sex marriage -- [chanting] she led a life of little notoriety, elected official who followed in her mother's footsteps ran rowan, kentucky clerk's office and people go to her for records and licenses. but her refusal to issue licenses to same sex couples put her in the national spotlight and oppo
