i'm randall pinkston in for betty nguyen. the story that's not news to beau of you, the hot, hot, hot weather. the blistering heat wave that hit the east coast will stay there through much of the weekend, the heat warnings and advisory cover an area from the central united states to the east coast, from carolinas to maine. triple digit temperatures are in many cities. if it's as hot as forecasters predict, today will be the hottest two-day stretch in this country since 1950. 22 deaths are blamed on the weather. it's not just the heat, it's the humidity and air quality making it so dangerous. more now from dean reynolds. >> reporter: the nation's weather is worse than hot, it's potentially lethal, with 30 states and the district of columbia under heat advisories, watches, or warnings, the death toll is expected to rise. >> heat waves by far on average each year kill more people than all other weather phenomena combined. that means hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning strikes, and floods. 1500 people per year. >> the persistent hig

randall pinkston reports from capitol hill. >>> leading lawmakers will work through the weekend, getting ready for a rare sunday meeting at the white house. president obama told both parties to show up with their bottom line demands in hand. >> the american people sent us here to do the right thing, not for party but for country. so, we're going to work together to get things done on their behalf. >> reporter: he's trying to take control of the debate over the debt limit. by pushing for a plan that raises that ceiling, slashes about $4 trillion in federal spending and closes some tax loopholes. republicans like the spending cuts but they argue closing those loopholes is the same as raising taxes. >> we are this far apart. it is not like there's some eminent deal about to happen. there are serious disagreements. >> reporter: part of the president's plan is upsetting some of his fellow democrats. he wants to cut entitlement programs such as medicare, medicaid and social security. the top democrat in the house, nancy pelosi met with the president this morning and was expected to ask him to

randall pinkston joins us tonight from oslo. randall?> reporter: there are new details being revealed about the accused gunman. principally that he rented a farm that allowed him to obtain 6,000 tons of fertilizer. the fertilizer that authorities believe was used in part to construct that powerful bomb that went off just a few blocks from here. police say the gunman at norway's youth camp had 90 minutes to attack before a s.w.a.t. team arrived. at least 84 people were killed. >> they ran out. and he just would shoot them. >> reporter: shaken survivors recall their desperate effort to get away from the man dressed as a policeman. some dove into icy waters, trying to swim away. others hid behind rocks. adrian plaquen was wounded in the shoulder. >> i was lying perfectly still and someone fell down so i hid behind. >> reporter: when policemen finally arrived the gunman reportedly gave up without a struggle. >> i tried to save people but there were people dead i couldn't do anything for. >> reporter: police say the suspect, a 32-year-old nor
