joining me now is the mayor of birmingham, alabama, randall woodfin. thank you so much, mayor.eeling great at this result. >> i am. this is great night for alabama. i'll tell you doug jones' victory represents the best of alabama. this is great night not just for democrats -- not just for alabamians but for america. >> mayor, why do you think the people of alabama ultimately decided to elect doug jones instead of roy moore? >> don, to be honest with you as i took a look at this race, one thing is this is already an up hill battle not just for dchls but for a special election, that it boils down to turn out. when it came down to messaging and the issues facing americans what was under assault was value and integrity and just over all decency. it wasn't necessarily anti-row moore. it was more pro-doug jones. having somebody not just representing and fighting for democrats but fighting for all alabamians. and doug jones represented the best of that. >> what about the potential embarrassment of having a man who allegedly preyed on teenage girls in his 30s as a senator? do you think

>> yeah, but randall woodfin is that, he is a son of birmingham, alabama, yes, people were excited. and he grew his base. he didn't grow them at the last minute. he had relationship. and that is really what the democratic party -- >> does doug jones have that? >> i'm not sure. and i want to be clear, i'm not blaming the democratic -- the fact that the democrats have not invested in alabama. i mean, you look at a red state and you ignore the people who are democrats, who are progressives. i hear it all the time. but what i'm saying is that the party itself has to start to build relationships and not ignore a red state just because it's red. it's ruby red because democrats have neglected it all this time. has the most impeccable pro-civil rights record that you can imagine. >> he does. >> even gone after the klan. i can't talk about that enough. >> but still -- >> along with that, he's pro-gun control. he's pro-choice -- >> he's anti-klan. >> -- and all the stuff that culture -- but i want to say something you're actually going to approve of. since 2015, 800,000 new people have been r

. >> you campaigned with randall woodfin. he just won and that was -- >> all right. that is senator-elect doug jones, democrat of alabama taking questions from the press. he continues to take them. let's turn to our panel and talk a little bit. symone, you heard him say there he was asked about how media reports were, in his view, wrong about how there wasn't enough of a ground game in alabama from the democratic party. >> yeah, i mean, i knew the media reports were also wrong, but i also, frankly, i thought it was a long shot. but the dnc, the democratic national committee, had 30 staffers on the ground. the jones campaign ran their own operation. then there was a coordinated operation of allied alabama groups, 27 groups across the state, that were particularly focused on getting out african-american voters. that included folks like woke vote, but also the working families party, individual group, righteous vote. then you had folks like priorities usa and the senate majority pac that put $1.5 million separately into african-american digital turnout program. >> he ha
