well, randi kaye up next in the news room. >>> a standoff over spending cuts, tax increases, authority to borrow. a presidential news conference imploering republicans to compromise was monday, and it's also today. the major different being we're now four days closer to august 2nd, and that's when the treasury says barring an increase in the debt ceiling it will have to pick and choose which bills it pays and which it let's slides. five straight days of face-to-face talks have fielded no agreement. nor is there an agreement on a house republican push for a much smaller plan made up of spending cuts alone. if all else fails, we may end up with an idea floated by the top senate republican, mitch mcconnell. we laid it out for you. three separate votes between now and the next elections to raise the nation's debt by $2.5 trillion, and there would be $1 trillion in spending cuts and a special congressional panel to shore up entitlements, and the up side supposedly for republicans is keeping the issue alive for another year and blaming the president, who, by the way, is not ruling it out. >>

. >>> "cnn newsroom" continues right now with randi kaye. >> thank you. bigger is better, and reforms beat repairs, and sometimes you have to eat your peas. president obama's guiding principles as he prepares to meet again with leaders of congress over debt, and default. he made his case for a sweeping deal combining sweeping cuts and tax reforms including cuts, and entitlement cuts. it's a plan worth $4 trillion, give or take, roughly twice the size of the house republicans now want. if you take a look here, that smaller bag of cash there, house republicans are looking at $2 trillion mainly in spending cuts. the back drop, of course, is the battle over raising the nation's debt ceiling, which the treasury says has to happen by august 2nd, or the u.s. risks it's first ever default. the president says a deal will get done, and it won't just be a stop gap. >> i will not sign a 30-day or a 60-day or a 90-day extension. that's just not an acceptable approach. if we think it's going to be hard -- if we think it's hard now, emergency how these guys are going to

cnn newsroom continues nowith randi kaye. >>> no one knows for sure what will happen innocent u.s. government suddenly and for the first time can't pay all its debts and obligations, this much we know that day is just eight days aunless, of course, congress and the white house can agree on a measure that used to be routine, a hike in the debt limit now just under 14.3 trillion. we actually hit that limit in may, but the treasury says the consequences start august 2nd. house and senate leaders and president obama agree on the short-term need to borrow more but they also agree on a long-term plan to borrow less that is still the hangup, having given up on one-on-one talks with the president, house speaker boehner is said to be work a plan that would raise the debt controlling a little bit now, more in 2012. that increase supposedly to would be tied ton-to-an overhaul of the tax code, entitlements, social security and medicare n senate, majority leader reid is expected to roll out a plan to cut spending by $2.7 trillion while raising the debt by 274 trillion. reid's plan would not inc

i'm randi kaye. glad you're with us. along with me is wolf blitzer. i want to ask what you think of the president's announcement there. sounds like maybe they're getting close to some type of agreement. >> if it were just the president, if it were just the senate, they would have an agreement. i have no doubt about it. but it's not just the senate, not just the president. it's also the house of representatives. and while this so-called gang of six, three democratic senators, three republican senators, they can come up with a framework that includes cuts in entitlements like medicare, medicaid, social security, it also does include what they call revenue enhancers or tax increases, if you will, and there are so many republicans in the house of representatives where the republicans have a lopsided majority, it's by no means clear that even if john boehner, and i suspect maybe he personally is ready to go along with it, but even if he were ready to go along with it, there would be so many of his republican colleagues who would vote against it, and there
