i am randi kaye live from boston this morning. we begin with the boston bombing. the death certificate confirms the violent final moments of tamerlan tsarnaev's death, the owner of the funeral home read the document to cnn, and it says tamerlan tsarnaev died of gunshots and blunt force trauma. it's not clear what will happen to him now. his body sits in a worcester funeral parlor as many protest the family wanting to bury him in the boston area. and explosive residue was found in the apartment where tamerlan lived with his wife and child. they found the explosive residue in the apartment and where was it and how much was there? >> they found it in three spots. kitchen sink, kitchen table and in the bathtub. keep in mind, these bombs are believed to have been built right in the apartment where he lived with his wife and young child. apparently constructed by tamerlan and his younger brother. this, according to our sources is what the suspect has been telling them. of course they wanted to look for physical evidence and apparently they have found some of that, but t

here's randi kaye. >> reporter: they were strangers for a decade. but they were united in fear. in 2002, michelle knight is the first to disappear. she was 21. how she was kidnapped is unclear according to various media reports. her mother said michelle loved animals and wanted to be a veterinarian. then, suddenly, she was gone. in april 2003, amanda berry vanishes after her evening shift at burger king. it's the eve of her 17th birthday. later this month, her family receives a phone call from amanda's cell phone. a man says he's taken her and she'll be home in a few days. in march 2004, a body of a teenage girl similar to amanda's description is found near san diego, california. dental records did not match. later that year on the montel williams show, a television psychic makes a grave prediction to her mother. >> do you think i'll ever see her again? >> in heaven, on the other side. >> reporter: meanwhile, another neighborhood girl goes missing. plucks off the same street as amanda and michelle. gina dejesus is taken while walking home from school. she is 14. a seventh grader

here's randi kaye. >> reporter: of all of the people comforting gina dejesus' mother last year in thenniversary of her daughter's disappearance, one man now stands out. ariel castro. not only did he comfort her mother while her daughter remained locked away in his home, but he played music and performed at the family's fundraisers. >> make no mistake, this was a man who was a master manipulator. the idea that he put on different masks to his own family is not unexpected. >> given what we know now that police believe castro held gina dejesus captive in his home for more than nine years, along with amanda berry and michelle knight, the very thought of him offering comfort is downright sickening for family members. >> it enables them to blend in and avoid suspicion. second, they can develop information about where the investigation is headed by pumping the family for information. and third, maybe sometimes most importantly, it provides them with pleasure. they are there. they're fooling the family. they're seeing the pain that the family might be going through. and if this is a sadistic

here is randi kaye. >> reporter: kidnapper and victim, a relationship that can be one of the strangestongest in human psychology. and it may be just what the three girls kidnapped in ohio relied on to survive. >> it's a very primitive, almost child-like attachment that develops. they come to know that their very survival is dependent on keeping this person happy and satisfied. >> reporter: forensic psychologist chris mohanda has studied cases involving cases like stockholm syndrome. he says kidnapping victims like those in ohio bond with their captors in a matter of days. stockholm syndrome got its name during this bank heist in stockholm, sweden in 1973. when the hostages were freed, they kissed and hugged their captors, two refused to test against them. perhaps the most famous case involving stockholm syndrome is patty hearst. the newspaper heiress was 19 when she was kidnapped in 1974. she was imprisoned and sexually assaulted but later robbed a bank with her captors and remained on the run with them for more than a year. >> you come to a point where you believe any lie that your ab
