randi kaye. she's in sarasota. randi kaye. obviously you were seeing debris itself start to fly earlier from a ceiling fan from a house, i believe. and other aspects of this that was a huge concern that officials had this coming so quickly after helene, what are you seeing right now and sarasota? >> yeah, absolutely. kaitlan. there's debris that of course became projectiles and that's, that's a scattered all over these neighborhoods. but we're just about 20 minutes or so from siesta key, where hurricane milton made landfall just near siesta key. so very close to where the storm came across. and when we were in the eye, kaitlan, it was so tranq will hear the birds started to come out. there was any when there wasn't any rain there were bugs and birds and you could hear the frogs out. now, the eye has passed, and we are now back in the thick of it. we do expect that this is going to get much worse for us. we're going to see more wind. we're going to see more rain. we had wind gusts of about 73 mile

i hope i do want to go to randi kaye, who's in sarasota, randi, you are about seven or so miles and correct me if i'm wrong, north of siesta key where the what what are you seeing? >> yeah, anderson, we're just about it's about a 20 minute drive or so and we know that the bridge, of course to siesta key and those barrier islands was closed at 7:00 p.m. last night. so if anybody was still in siesta key or nearby, they had to ride out hurricane milton there as that i came over right here and sarasota, even though we're not that far from where the eye i came up over, it is extremely calm right now. there is a little bit of rainfall, but the winds have completely died down. these fences were blown over from the winds just a short time ago, those wind gusts, we saw one gsa was about 74 miles per hour or so, and this cloth that had been up on these on these columns here before. this was whipping anderson in the wind. and now it's just on the ground. you can see that's that just shows you how much the winds have died down there actually gone. we've seen some emergency vehicles coming through alrea

let's check back in now with randi kaye, who is in in sarasota. randi. i understand that you are in a moment of calm, at least your word last time we checked in, hopefully those roads are still clear because authorities do not want people out checking on the damage. what are you seeing around you yeah. >> exactly. victor, the roads are still pretty quiet here. we have seen just a couple of emergency vehicles, but the neighborhood that we're in is pretty dark and pretty quiet. but one reason why they don't want people out it's something like this. we were here earlier and this is a piece of, this is a fan blade there was a ceiling fan up on the patty, up on the deck, right above me that came flying off during the storm. so that's one of the reasons because why you have to, you have to evacuate and you have to be careful where you go. during the storm. this is some of the fence that was separating our yard where we are from the neighbor's yard. and this fence just blew apart during the storm and some of it had was airborne we're very concerned about projec

petersburg, florida for us, i want to go to cnn's randi kaye for some more right now. she's in sarasota, florida near the location where milton is forecast to barreled ashore. randi, what's happening there? because this hurricane is closing in worst weather we've seen, we were out the door about 12 hours ago to start live shots this morning. >> and it was it's been a steady rain for 12 hours here, but this is the heaviest rains that we have seen all day. also, the wind has certainly picked up. we expect we're going to see the worst of the wind in the next few hours here in sarasota, we're in a neighborhood here which is completely evacuated. we are really the only ones here. i can see this street here behind me, i definitely would not say it would be safe to walk on water is already picking up here thank and adding up here in the distance there, i'm not sure if you could see there's building they're building a structure out there and those are construction fences that are now whipping and around in the wind our neighbor's home that i'm looking at is also completely boar

we're going to go now to cnn's randi kaye. she's sarasota randi tell us about what you're seeing, where you are. we've been seeing some calmer pictures with bill and with boris, but it looks pretty rough where you are still yeah. >> abby, our story really is more the wind, at least as far as we can tell than the flooding, which is a lot of what they are seeing. there we have been sort of up and down with the wind and the rain throughout the day we were here when the eye cross and everything think got very tranquil, very quiet, and the birds came out and the frogs came out and now having passed the eye, has passed. so we've got the wind starts to kick up again and we started seeing more rain again. we did have winds of 102 at sarasota airport, which is not far from where we are that is certainly a bit of what we are feeling as well in this area. the good news is a lot of the people abby have evacuated sarasota is pretty much very, very quiet. the homes are boarded up. they have their hurricane hurricane shades on and shutters on

we know you're gonna be uncomfortable, but you'll be alive cnn's randi kaye and isabel rosales standing by along milton's path. let's get straight to you, randy it's very clearly starting to rain. what are you seeing there? >> yeah. good morning, kate. conditions are certainly deteriorating here. we are on south sword, south shore drive in sarasota. so we are along the water where they are expecting here a potentially record breaking storm surge of ten to 15 feet. keep in mind the storm surge for helene was about seven feet they are quite concerned if you just look at this dock here behind me, you can see that boat. that boat is potentially going to be taken out by that storm surge and possibly by the winds. there could be 140 mile per hour winds here along the shore and then across the way there, if you can see there are a bunch of homes along the water, many of them have their hurricane shutters up certainly boarded up. a lot of people have left town because of what they experienced with helene. we've been driving around sarasota. it's really like a ghost town. they seem to be heeding

i mean, anybody who's outside, you start to shiver randi kaye, i think in sarasota. vote, sorry, a ready. what's the situation where you are there you. >> i keep thinking that the winds are going to die down and they just keep picking up and also hear the temperature has dropped significantly. it's called ai, like you have changed shirts a couple of times just to try and stay warm so we are experiencing a similar a similar thing here in sarasota. we've seen winds of about 102. we were at the were just nearby and sarasota airport and the wind tends to come and go right right now, it takes a little dip and its energy and then it tends to come back. i mean, it was actually pushing the down the driveway of the place where we are. but we have seen a lot of a fair amount of destruction around where we are. we've seen this fence which is which has blown apart. this was the fence that was dividing between divided this house to the house next door to us. but we i also checked in with the backyard of the house that we're at in this neighborhood? for heard, which has been compl

. >> let's get to randi kaye, who is in sarasota, florida right now, right in the center of this path, randi, what are you seeing this morning? >> yeah. good morning, john. it has been raining steadily here this morning. we know that conditions are expected to get much worse here because we are as you heard potentially in the bullseye for this storm, we are on south shore drive here in sarasota. you can see there there's a dock behind me and some water and that boat. we don't know so how long that boat will remain there? we're also seeing some lightning here in the area as well, but we are expecting a potentially record breaking storm surge of ten to 15 feet here. they thought helene was record-breaking. it's seven feet here, so certainly they are very concerned. they're also concerned about the winds that are expected to pick up this afternoon about 40 miles per hour and up starting with the tropical storm force winds this afternoon, we're hearing some thunder in the area as well. people, john have been evacuating here they know what helene did. they see the debris around the neighbo

that is where randi kaye is right now so randi, what are you seeing at this moment? >> erin, we are seeing some major wins here. they're coming and going, but we know that we clocked 74 miles an hour just in the last hour and, we also know that the center of the storm is now about 35 miles from us here in sarasota. i moved just a little bit closer inside because the winds are getting strong and this is a piece of a fan. this is a fan blade that was on a fan that was just above us on a porch that came flying down. so that is part of the reason why we moved it. and i'm not picture if you can see this fence here next to us, that's the fence that belongs to the neighbor's house. that sense is now on the ground as well. so the winds are certainly picking up. we know that we're in the thick of it. it's going to get much worse for us here. in the next hour or so as hurricane milton gets closer green closer, there's so much debris around this neighborhood, erin, and that is such a concern, so it's good that people have left because things like that, the fan blade, the pieces

let's go to randi kaye, who has been standing by and watching how things are looking. preps are happening and how it's deteriorating and sarasota, what are you seeing? >> yeah. good morning, kate and john. we've seen a mix of weather here already this morning. we've seen a fair amount of lightning and thunder and heavy bands of rain coming through right now, it's a little bit quieter, but we are expecting this storm surge that derek was talking about about ten to 15 feet here in sarasota where at south shore drive? in the backyard of a home that is the smart owner has evacuated, but you can see left his boat behind and he's very concerned about what might happen to his boat, of course, given this ten to 15 foot potential storm surge and then across the water over there, there's a group of homes that have clearly evacuated. they have their storm shutters up and they're very, very quiet. we've been driving around sarasota for the last day or so and it has been very, very quiet here. it's pretty much a ghost town. the restaurants have shut down. people were boarding up. t

. >> i randi kaye covering hurricane milton and sarasota, florida and this is cnn breaking news as hurricaneton is just hours away from landfall. let's check in with cnn's carlos suarez, who's down in fort myers, florida, carlos, that areas already seen apparent tornadoes before the hurricane even makes landfall. what are you seeing right now? >> that's exactly right, jake. so there were two confirmed tornadoes, one out in western broward and the other just to the north and hendry county. and now here in fort myers, there are reports of two tornadoes that hit earlier today. one of those tornadoes is just on the other side of where we are from across the collusive that she river. this is a part of fort myers, florida that we are keeping a close eye on because of the storm surge. now, video from the neighborhoods where these one of these tornadoes we believe touched down earlier today, showed several homes out there really torn apart a damaged a lot of the debris that covered the streets out there. the good he uses that. it doesn't believe that anyone was hurt at either of these two locations.

. >> randi kaye is on the ground where some residents are already grappling with losses from one historic storm are now appearing to ride out another we've never flooded not even an inch, and we've been evacuated numerous times over the years. katie current and her husband, chris, lived on siesta key, a barrier island off sarasota for the last 25 years, she evacuated for helene, but her husband stayed in their house to ride out the storm that night. >> he got no power. he had no phone and we lost touch with him and we found out the next day there was a five foot surge of water in the house and he was all night in the pitch dark and five foot of water and he went out, he noticed the water rising and thought this could be really bad. and he went out and the water raised up to his chest and he went across the street and climbed a neighbor steps and was just in the dark counting the steps. and he sat there for hours on the top of a neighbor's high house until the water went down a little and then went back in the house and laid on a wet bed until light. >> her husband has been ill ever since.
