, lose situatio that can be easily solved if congress gets back into town and does its job. >> randy babbittr of the faa. mr. babbitt, good to see you today. >> thank you. nice to be here. >> one of the biggest sticking points right now seems to be slashing the funding to these rural airports, some 13 where the government helps cover the costs to run them. would you support the funding cut if it means a deal now that would put these furloughed employees back to work? >> well, one of the basic problems is we have had this extension passed 20 times without any riders to it. they have chosen this one to put some political attachments to it, which is kind of thwarting the effort. i just want an extension bill passed. i'll let congress use their wisdom as to what they'll accept or not accept with it. but we need to put 4,000 people back to work. we need to put 70,000 construction workers back to work. we've got 250 projects already stopped around the country and that number increases every day. i just would like congress to take a break from vacation, come back and pass a bill and let us get back

[applause] >> thank you. thank you for that incredibly gracious introduction. i appreciate this. it is great to see all of you tonight. i have been here in a different format but it is great to be back here. i was in mexico this morning, leaving on safety issues with our colleagues from canada and mexico and we have a very productive meeting. it is always great to come home, and although i can say that a lot of places, -- this about a lot of places, this is my home and it is great to be here with you. much of what i do now, i do not go to see this many friendly faces. as we get started, i want to thank alpha in general. this is for being our ally on so many fronts especially during the last few weeks. most of you are aware that we have been through a very challenging time with the lapse in reauthorization. this authorization failed to be continued and the subsequent effect was we had to furlough 4000 employees. we had to issue orders to stop working, and this comes out of the airport trust fund, and we had to

administrator randy babbitt is blasting congress for thinking of taking a summer recess while thousands of federal workers remain furloughed. 4,000 f.a.a. employees have been out of work without pay since july 23. because congress failed to reauthorize the agency authority to oversee air travel. thousands more airport construction workers lost their jobs because all airport construction projects have been halted. airport inspectors have been working without pay and charging travel expenses to their own personal credit cards. senate democrats say they hope to offer a plan to end the faa shutdown by calling for a vote possibly today. >>> meantime, as a result of that shutdown, delta airlines now saying it will refund the taxes that were charged to passengers who bought tickets in the shutdown process. refunds will only apply to people who surface their tickets before last saturday's shutdown began but flew after that. so flying on or after july 23. delta says it is waiting to hear from the i.r.s. before telling people exactly when refunds will be given. but you can go to the website abc7n
