the fire burned for hours forcing dozens to evacuate, including guests at a nearby hotel. >> randy gyllenhaal is live at the scene with a closer look at the investigation which is just about to get under way. randy? >> reporter: you mentioned this fire was officially placed under control just before 7:00 this morning. but crews are going to remain out here for hours dealing with hotspots and a ton of smoke. you can still see they're putting water into the third, fourth and fifth floors of this building. a lot of smoke and we have still seen a few flames popping out of the building. firefighters say they do not expect this to spread any further. the red cross was on scene this morning helping. the dozens of people evacuated from apartments above the fire and a nearby hotel. this is the corner of 3rd and chestnut streets in old city. fire officials say the flames started in a six-story building at 239 chestnut street. that's right across from the museum of the american revolution. it's a building that includes apartments, a diner, a pizza shop and right next door, a best western hotel that was

randy. meanwhile in philadelphia, a woman in her 70s is dead following a house fire in the city's fox chase neighborhood. firefighters responded to this burning home last night. you can see the intensity of the flames there. it took crews about 90 minutes to get the fire under control. the victim died at the scene. two firefighters were also hurt but they'll be okay. investigators will be looking for the cause of the fire. >>> now back to our weather and that snow coating for parts of the region this morning. lehigh valley is waking up to most of the snowfall in the area. >> this is the worst kind of snow to clean up, because it can be a back breaker. pamela as borne is live for us. tell us about the drive there outside the city limits of philadelphia. >> reporter: yeah. we traveled 76. we traveled the northeast extension and the roads were pretty clear. they were a little bit wet on the surface. you could see snow on the sides. but everything was looking good. good news if you're headed out the door this morning. i want to give you a look at where we're at. this is hamilton and 7th street in allentown. you can see a lot of the roadways look

burned for hours in philadelphia's old city neighborhood. the damage is done, though. dozens of people are out of their homes this morning. >> randy gyllenhaal is live at the scene at third and chestnuts streets with a look at the investigation just giting under way. randy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they did officially declare this fire under control. but that does not mean the fight is over. crews have been on scene for hours. this is 239 chestnut street. that's where the fire started. building appears to be a total loss. the apartments above it appear to be burnt to a crisp. if we pan over to the right, you will see philly fire crews working on the neighboring building, 237 chestnut. smoke out of the windows there it's right across from the museum of the american revolution. it's a block that has a number of bars, restaurants, apartments above, a best western hotel. the hotel had a number of guests inside who had to evacuate after smelling smoke, hearing sirens. people in the buildings, also forced out of their homes on to the cold street below. we've been catching up with evacuees who right now don't have a place

. >>> buses burned, a local school district is forced to cancel class after an overnight fire. thanks for staying with us. the damage totals more than $1.5 million. randy gyllenhaal has the details from south whitehall township. >> reporter: what you see behind me used to be a building, a garage where all the buss were stored. those 25 bright yellow school buses now charred, burnt metal skeletons. and fire crews as well as the fire marshal continue to be on scene investigating. officials say the call came in around 3:00 a.m. first reported as smoke, then fire consumed everything in that garage. there were no injuries, but it took firefighters hours to get the blaze under control. the school district had to cancel classes since these buses are used to transport student. they make up about a fifth the school's entire fleet and the superintendent tells us they're already working to purchase new replacement buses. >> i went down to the bus garage and it was an inferno. i was just glad no one was hurt. material things can be replaced, we can get new bus, we can replace the pole barn and the garage that it was in and, you know, i'm just happy no one was inju
