randy gyllenhaal is joining us in pike county. set the scene for us. >> reporter: for weeks we typically saw eric frein show zero emotion in court. he's very stoic. today was quite different. he was disshelf and unshaven. he hasn't slept since wednesday and when his mother took the stand for the very first time we saw him wipe away a tear. eric frein arrived today in a wheelchair, two deputies assisted him into court on suicide watch and looking unwell. his defense attorneys say he suddenly refuses to speak with them. >> is he speaking with you guys now? >> now he's not talking. >> reporter: he's not talking. his defense team now trying to show that eric frein may be mentally unfit. >> he's scared. >> reporter: but the prosecution is not buying it. >> we are of the opinion that this all eric frein trying to delay the proceedings. >> reporter: today in court frein's mother and father took the stand in effort to save their son's life. his father told the jury, i failed eric admitting he lied to his son about his military record and

we'll go live to pike county where nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is getting insight into the sentencing from inside the courtroom. randy will have that emotional testimony of the statement from corporal dixon's widow coming up at 5:30. >>> in the meantime, new information on the deadly police shooting in wilmington yesterday. we brought this to you as breaking news. tonight we know the man who police killed was wanted in connection with another shooting. nbc 10 is learning more about the suspect and what police say happened. what have you learned about this? >> reporter: the suspect's name is keith price. it all started when they tried to serve a warrant for his arrest. by the time it all ended in the parking lot of this church, innocent bystanders were involved in car crashes, a school was on lockdown and that 21 year old was dead. >> major crime squad detectives identified keith price as suspected shooter in the april 9th shooting. >> reporter: new castle county police say keith price fled in his green civic setting off a pursuit as officers tried to arrest him on attempted murder charges.

. >> randy gyllenhaal has the latest developments. randy? >> reporter: this jury deliberated for nearly five hours, well into the night, then one minute before 10:00 p.m. they came back into the courtroom with a unanimous verdict saying that eric frein will be executed for his crimes. we just saw some members of the jury hugging in the jury room. obviously a very difficult decision for them. and as is tradition the bells rang loudly after the verdict was announced. these bells tolling as a defendant is sentenced to die, as is tradition here to notify the town of the verdict. meantime in court, eric frein had no emotion. his defense team hoped they had hoped for a life sentence and eric was hoping for one too. but the jury found zero mitigating circumstances meaning they didn't buy into the defense theory that frein's father was partly to blame here and the pennsylvania the state police commissioner and top brass spoke a few minutes ago offering prayers to the family of corporal bryan dixon. >> also want to let the corporal bryan dixon's fami

nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live outside the courthouse. you were inside the courtroom when that verdict was read. did you see frein react at all? >> reporter: as he was throughout had this entire trial, no emotion from eric frein. he was very stoic. just staring at the jury. it was just after 5:00 p.m. that the jury returned to the courtroom to read the verdict. guilty on all counts, that includes the capital murder charge for the killing of brian dixon, the attempted murder charge of injuring douglas and other charges like terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. this verdict capping off a long two and a half years in pike county. and after the sniper ambush, the ensuing 48-day manhunt and now the trial. in closing arguments, the district attorney was blunt calling frein a terrorist with murder in his heart and a rifle in his hand. the jury saw that rifle, plus a lot of other evidence including surveillance video of the attack. and for two hours, the prosecution recapped their evidence. the defense only spoke for ten minutes. frein kept

randy gyllenhaal was in court for the testimony. >> reporter: yesterday we learn ed about the paper notebook, a journal that eric frein kept with him during the 48-day manhunt and today handwriting experts took look at that eviden evidence. we saw alex douglas arrive here at the courthouse. douglas was injured in the ambush sniper attack. we expect him to testify and take the stand next week likely on monday. and for the first time, high ranking state police brass came to the kourlt house including the current and former commissioner. but this morning's testimony focused again on that journal handwriting experts took the stands comparing the handwriting in the notebook to other. papers found in a camp site hide out. journal entries, catalogs, every day of his time at large often detailing his struggle in the woods. they say frein even wrote, i'm surprised i lasted this long. this one passage prosecutors say he wrote, this massive search cannot last forever. frein was captured after 48 days found in that airplane hangar. he's not expected to testify. earlier this week jurors did see videotape
