in gladwyne, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >>> thank you, randy.t nine people have died in the major storm. a man was killed in north jersey touching live power lines the wind blew down on friday night. >>> the storm with the flooding rains, powerful waves left a trail of damage from the carolinas to maine. as of last night, well over a million households were without power. in quincy, massachusetts, the national guard evacuated people to shelters. the storm also forced thousands of flight delays and cancellations, closed roads and bridges and shut down amtrak's northeast corridor. >> the sound after the storm. crews cleared away downed trees with the help of chainsaws and chippers yesterday. the warm sunshine was a welcome condition for those who spent the day cleaning up. >> finally calmed down now. but hopefully we can get some response to take some stuff and get our power back. >> down the shore, minor flooding in the back bays like here in ventnor forced people to wade to knee-high water to get to their cars. >> oh, my god! holy plp h. . >>> randy gyllenhaal is live in gladwyne where many are still without power. randy? >> reporter: yeah. we're seeing scenes like this one. pieces of the power lines on the ground. tons of debris from the trees that have fallen down. take a look at this tree behind me that's still down two days later. williamson road in glad wynn hanging on to the power lines above, knocking out power. some of the homes in this neighborhood do still have electricity. a few streets away, they might not. it's all kind of random depending whether crews have gotten to your neighborhood yet. montgomery county still has about 40,000 outages. that's number 2 in the region. delaware county number 1 with even more. in fact, in delaware county, a third of the entire county lost power. county officials there signed a disaster declaration yesterday. that opens up more resources for emergency management. but there are some success stories we're hearing about. we found a restaurant over in ambler that finally, after about a day and a half got their power back on. >> around 2:30 our power went out. w

randy gyllenhaal is live in bryn mawr along old golf road. known for the tall trees that come crashing down. randy? >> reporter: yeah. that wind really caused a lot of them to come down. peco tells us the worst outages remain in delaware county and also in montgomery county. we're here in bryn mawr which straddles the line. this first up is a transformer that blew the actual wind, knocked down the tran former pole. does not appear it had anything to do with the tree. if you look up, that's where it snapped above us. that's what peco will be doing to repair this power line. you have obvious power issues. peco tells us this one is deenergized. we're going to be careful as we walk. this is a crazy scene as we walk over here. this was a large tree. you can see up here. this is where it snapped in the height of that wind. gigantic stree coming crashing down on to this vehicle. we'll slowly walk over here and show you the damage this tree did to this, looks like corporate company vanna of some sort. it really crushed the driver's side of this van. p

randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >>> randy, thank you. and we turn now to nbc 10's dray clark live in the chestnut hill. >> reporter: very slippery out here this morning with that light snow on the ground. we are here at the chestnut east hill train station. in fact, we don't expect to see many people catching the train today because they've been given the option of staying at home or working from home. certainly that big storm that came through here last weekend was a good indication of whatnot to do in a storm. a lot of lessons there. take a look at this parking lot here, reflection of which you will find on the roads there. snow covered. you can still see the black top, but nonetheless the roads are still slippery. we know they have 40,000 tons of salt to work with some 400 peatses of equipment all trying to cover about 2,500 miles of road throughout the city. trying to stay ahead of the storm. the mayor warning people yesterday to try and stay off the roads because we still have a long way to go. and at the heart of the storm, they wo

randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >>> from snow to a flooding concern. a coastal flood advisory in effect for delaware river this morning. and seeing that water. take a look at penns landing, drivers going through that water which is exactly what the city of office management reminds people not to do. not safe to drive through high-water like that. now let's start next about snow. a snow emergency takes effect in the city of philadelphia, which means the city will tow cars parked along snow emergency routes, so you've got to get them off those routes. >> shortly after winter weather made its way into philadelphia snow snowplows started making their way through the schuylkill expressway this morning. >>> here's a live look at cape may. you can see wet roads there. they'll see mostly rain, windy conditions through the day. beach erosion is a concern. that area took a beating during last week's nor'easter. today's worry is that this new storm could pound the storm again increasing the potential there. how much snow you get varies, of course, by neighborhood

randy gyllenhaal is live just outside city hall with more on what the mayor is proposing. tell us about it, randy. >> reporter: good morning. we're still waiting on the mayor to begin his speech, but the big number here is $1 billion. the exact number is about 980 million. the mayor will say it's a historic investment into philadelphia public schools, but taxpayers will be on the hook, especially those who own property here in the city of philadelphia. the mayor will ask for a 6% increase on the city's property tax rate for the average homeowner in philadelphia. the city says that means you'll pay about an extra $95 every year. the mayor's office says that extra money would go directly into philadelphia public schools which are notoriously underfunded. it could mean more reading coaches to increase literacy, more college readiness programs, investments in school safety, buildings, infrastructure. we asked parents today what they think. >> i that means everything. my son hits the honor roll every year. two honor rolls in a row this year, we got somewhere go. so philly school

randy gyllenhaal is live for us where a family had a close call with a tree.> reporter: yeah. this was one of the hardest-hit places in all of montgomery county. officials say 3,000 people in lower providence township still without power. a large tree in the front of this house up rooted during the storm and crashed into the front of the house. that's the family's living room. i spoke to the father who was inside with his three-year-old son when it happened. he said they were watching tv. the couch is right behind that window. just about 3:00. that was really the peak of the storm. he heard a bit of a creeking from the tree and a loud crash into his house. he's got great dad reflexes. his son was sitting on the couch. he grabbed him, moved him out of the way right in the nick of time. he said his son wasn't injured but a close call in front of their house. >> i'll just make sure he was okay. i was checking his head for no cut or blood. check his body. i'm just so glad we're okay. that's -- i mean, money can -- i mean, we have insurance. hopefully they'll take

randy gyllenhaal is live in a storm-ravaged neighborhood in bryn mawr where crews are busy today. randy? >> reporter: yeah. and good news is the cavalry has arrived. these trucks behind me are from wisconsin and illinois. peco is bringing in reinforcements. this is old golf road in bryn mawr. you can see the situation. a tree down no the front. we go further and you see that transformer and power line that was cracked in half by the wind. that fell down, knocking out power to the entire neighborhood. if you go all the way to the back, you see that white van there. we're told by neighbors, that van was driving down this street during the height of the storm. neighbors heard a sudden gust of wind, it was real loud and then the crash of the tree came down exactly on top of that van. take a listen. >> i poked my head out and asked people if they needed help. a gentleman came in, he had blood on his face. disoriented, understandably. it turns out this was his car. he was in it. he managed to crawl out the window. emergency crews were called. he was luckily -- >> he was walking? >> he wa

nbc10's randy gyllenhaal is live outside olney charter high school where extra police will be on patrol in response. >> reporter: extra patrols and parents keep something children home. students saw the threats on their phones first. it was posted to social media, specifically on instagram. let me show you a picture of the threat that the students found posted to instagram. somebody threatening to shoot students of a certain ethnic background, even using a gun emoji. philadelphia police are investigating the threat. olney charter high school says they're taking it seriously. they've added extra security. since the mass shooting in florida, schools across the country have seen similar threats like this, leading to numerous arrests. parents say it's not funny, and police say it's a feloni. >> we take it very seriously. last week a student tried to take a gun into the school. he was arrested. we take that seriously. >> it's funny. when and if you get caught, it's a felony. kids need to know you're about to ruin your life over a joke. >> reporter: the school sent a letter to parents yesterd
