and that red sweep that you see there, that is storm ranger 10. this is the first time we have shown it. it's the first of its kind anywhere and this is a mobile doppler radar. this line that you see here. that's the 30-mile range. that's the most effective range where we can see the storm all the way to the ground pretty much and that's why we're going see these storms in sum bland county as accurately as anybody can see them. this is right over cedarville now. the problem with some of these is that they are not moving very much, and the other thing that we can see on storm ranger 10 is the amount of rain, the intensity of the rain and give you an idea of when there's significant flood threat. the storms in parts of sussex county fortunately continue to spread towards the coast and maybe will get offshore in a couple of hours because it's really heavy. ocean pines at fenwick island, ocean view seeing some that have heavy rain. like i said, there's not much from philadelphia north and west here. there's some back by lebanon but that's a long way a

the storm ranger right now is located at jacob riis park in queens. whenever we show it on a map, this is what the radar sweep will look like. it will be a red beam that sweeps outwards, 75 miles around the tri-state right now there isn't anything within 75 miles in terms of storms to show you. here is a look at the conventional stand-alone radars that are sitting on those stationary towers. it's a wide beam that scans around the area. we used several of those from the national weather service. there are storms outside our 75-mile range in the catskills and poconos. storm ranger will be able to, if more information as it gets closer to us. here is another look at showers way north and west near rockland and thompson back into the poconos right now. some isolated downpours and pop-up thunderstorms. hit or miss shower or storm will stay in that area the rest of this evening. those will dissipate as the sun goes down. it turns hot and muggy over these next several days. a great beach weekend. not a washout even though storms are coming sunday comfortable

park rangers say poison was found in a water trough. this is quite a scare for hikers and dog walkers. >> reporter: it is. there are water troughs like the one behind me across the park. the one in question is up the trail quite a ways a little bit here. tonight, park rangers are warning visitors to be extra vigilant and extra careful. this is the trough where yesterday a county park employee found something unusual inside. it was a substance in blocks. rangers say it was poison often used to kill rodents. >> to know one is poisoning the water. we're at a drought. it's what they drink. to know that people out there exist, it's sad. that they're out here with us. >> reporter: right now, is the only trough in the park where rangers found the poison. horses, dogs and wild life use it. but it's not known if any animals were exposed. tonight, rangers are asking visitors to beware and inspect the troughs before allowing animals to drink out of them. >> that's a terrible thing. they want to kill the animals. >> reporter: rangers say it's now c

there's storm ranger on the left. some of the features of why it's important to have something like this. a lot of mixed mountain top radars. unfortunately due to the curvature of the earth it misses critical data. especially around at bay area. a lot of times the radar can overscan what is happening there. put the radar on wheels and we can fill in the gaps from the peninsula to the inner east bay, tri-valley, or back to san francisco. we can track the weather as it happens in real time. now this weather radar also can track fine details. it has high resolution capability. almost seven times faster in terms of gathering in those scans as it moves around the bay area. and can detect wild fire smoke. our sister station in southern california is using storm ranger to look at the fire and the smoke across southern california. very excited to bring that technology to you here at nbc bay area. >>> temperatures out now and 60s and dusting off rate dollar. there's a light chance of a few scattered showers from east to west.

and it is called storm ranger. we rolled it out at some of our other affiliates like our san francisco station. this is storm ranger. what is it? it is a weather tracking vehicle with a weather station and cameras. but the back of the truck is a scanning doppler radar. and that will help to improve storm accuracy in the bay area. it's not only a doppler radar. but let's look at the specifics. it has a dual polarization function to give us a view of what is coming our way and some of the heavier rain. and we also have an x-band radar that can detect wildfire smoke and give us an idea what direction that is heading. this is important in the bay area because of the varied toe positi position -- topography. with storm ranger, it is mobile. it has wheels. so we can get closer and provide you better detail and it's excellent at tracking the rain, drizzle and smoke from wildfires. we have the scan up right now. we have the truck located out in the bay area. right now it is in the south bay. you can see the red line is the

reporter: the rangers need to be quick. should an elephant fall, it could suffocate.eterinarians make sure the animals can breathe properly. it is not the largest relocation projects ever undertaken. 500 elephants removed from malawi's national park to a different reserve, one that is safer and with fewer animals. >> it is unusual, it is stressful, they don't know or they are going. so there is a significant stress to them. but if you are moving them as a herd, where there is food and water and research has been done on the final destination, those stresses are worth it. reporter: elephants can weigh up to six tons. only one has died during transportation. the elephants chase challenge -- face challenges. different plants grow at the destination, and they have to change their diet. but there is no future for too many elephants here. the elephants are not able to find enough to eat. they are freaking out of reserves looking for you and have killed people and the -- breaking out of the reserves and looking for food and have killed people in the process. >> we are settin
