chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now. let's talk about how long this heat spell is going to last and how high are those temperatures going to get? >>> well, i see at this point, a two-day event for us, as we head through thursday, and friday. and the temperatures will be the hottest we've seen so far this year. as we are anticipating our first 90-degree temperatures for the inland valleys. so i wanted to start off with a look outside of our san francisco sky camera network, and there is some fog. but it's way, way out there, generally clear skies, temperatures running anywhere from 10 to close to 15 degrees above average for a few spots, the average in santa rosa is 73. we are up to 86 today. the change tomorrow is the area of hot high pressure that builds in even stronger, a big dome that is a bubble of heat that is sitting across the west once again for the next two days. so that means, as we start off tomorrow, the good news, we'll get some cooling, 50s, and by the afternoon, though, 3:00 p.m., we're looking at low 90s

it looks beautiful up there. >> let's check in with with jeff ranieri. jeff? >> oh, it is going to be so gorgeous saturday and sunday. before the major heat gets here starting on memorial day. right now, that sun is starting to set, and everybody across the bay area has lots of sunshine. i want to bring you outside with a high-definition sky camera. if you have not been able to get out for fresh air today, work from home, doing home schooling. 76 right now in lafayette, and mt. diablo. and we will bring tout north way. 62, tiburon. we move through tomorrow. temperatures warming up 3 to 5 degrees. we are staying out of the 90s tomorrow but plenty to low to mid-80s inland. concord, 6 86 and santa rosa, also 81. and the major hit gets here monday, tuesday, wednesday. i have bumped the temperatures in the low 100s. one thins i did want to get you on, the drought. 20.84% of california is in severe drought. this means fire danger for us and crop damage. coming up in 25 minutes, i will take a look at drought tolerant plants and show you something i am growing in my y

let's bring in our chief chi meteorologist jeff ranieri jeff ranie ranieri. >> that heat is starting to fade. we're on the downward friend of this hot weather, even though it's sweltering outside, we are looking at some cooling, especially by the weekend. let's get a look at the temperatures and we'll show you where we were at today. concord, 100 to 104 degrees. lafayette, 103. brentwood, 102. campbell, 101. and gilroy at 101, as well. when you compare these to the records, what you're going to see here is that the concord airport did set a record reaching that 100. and also a record in santa rosa at 95 degrees, beating the old of 89 set back in 2003. so with changes beginning tomorrow, i do think we'll start off more comfortable. 9:30 in the morning, 63 in san francisco, 67 in napa. and 73 in san jose. and watch this, by the afternoon, not nearly as hot with upper 80s and low to mid 90s coming our way. now, in about 15 minutes, we'll talk about a rain chance and how much rain we could see. and i'll also talk about a problem you might be finding around your house with some of this la

let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri who joins us with an updated time line. jeff, what are you seeing? >> well, i am seeing right now, we are at the peak of this heat, this very moment, from hear on out, we're definitely going to be on the cooler side of things. but it was hot. dangerously hot. especially over contra costa county and almeda county. i want to take you to the warmest locations. concord was that at 101 to 104 degree range. depending on where you were there. and lafayette, also 103. and brentwood. 102. and gilroy at 101. and so one more day with the heat warning in effect, for those interior valleys under that heat advisory, your temperatures ranging 95 to 100 degrees, so still another day to check on your elderly neighbors and relatives and make sure to drink plenty of water, but again, not quite as warm. and you'll see tomorrow morning, the temperatures starting in the 60s, to low 70s, at 9:30 in the morning, and so a little bit of relief for you, and once we round out by 4:00 p.m. tomorrow, you can see, just not nearly as sweltserring across t

that sounds wonderful. >>> let's check in with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. what kind of skies are they going to be seeing? >> well, we will have some clouds moving in, but i think the south bay might have the best chance and parts of the east bay to see some of that activity off towards the distance. we are again tracking some on again, off again rain chances. so let's gbring you into that microclimate forecast. i have made a few adjustments with the rain holding off a little bit longer. i think overall we'll start off with a dry picture and some sun and clouds for the peninsula. partly cloudy for the tri-valley and also the south bay with temperatures in the low to mid-50s. we'll begin with more of an overcast sky over san francisco and the north bay. so let's get you a better fix on that rainfall. you'll see by 8:30 in the morning things have slowed down with any kind of rainfall here offshore. this is a very small, weak disturbance, so now heavy rainfall. once we hit 11:30, we'll see some of those spotty showers over san francisco and those clouds startin

[music] [music] especially in times like these, strong public schools make a better california for all of us. >>> we're following some breaking news in san jose. take a look. the flames and the smoke could be seen for miles. this two-alarm fire near the drive-in movie theaters near capital expressway. this is at the a-1 auto wreckers on hills dale avenue. there was a movie playing tonight. that caused a lot of fear at the drive-in. no word yet on what caused the fire, but there are a lot of wrecked cars and porta potties on site of that auto yard where the flames were. we do have a crew at the scene gathering more information. >>> a state of emergency in michigan. days of heavy rainfall caused two dams to burst. this led to severe flooding in several towns along the eastern side of the state. tonight michigan's governor calling on residents in the affected areas to evacuate. go

we are tracking a late-season storm that will bring rain t jeff ranieri joins us with the timeline. >> that storm system right now is just about 24 hours away from beginning to move in some showers to the bay area. so as we get a look right now, what i do want to show you is the storm's going to be dropping down from the north but we'll also see an atmospheric river tap pushing in from the south. it's a weak atmospheric river tap. it's basically a tropical boost of moisture that's going to boost up those rainfall totals, at least for may. definitely some above-average rainfall coming our way. so by 11:00 p.m. on saturday, rainfall develops over the north bay. then we'll see that first round of showers as we move into sunday morning. so here's the deal. rain accumulates and develops on sunday into monday. we'll have colder 60s. winds 15 to 30 miles per hour and even a sierra winter storm watch. we have storm ranger at san bruno mountain to give you a g arrives. we'll have details and exactly how much rain and snow we'll get. we'll have that for in about 135 minutes. >>> contra costa co

let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. we are inching toward this holiday weekend with hopefully a lot of sunshine, jeff. >> yeah, i know you were trying to make whatever plans you were able to at home like many folks out there. and the weather this weekend i think's going to be kind of split down the middle. then once we hit memorial day it's really going to skyrocket. so let's bring in to that microclimate forecast because it's a huge change from what we had to start off the week, so you'll be ready to go. as we begin tomorrow morning there is no issues at all. if you're taking the dog to the groomer, you're going to the pharmacy, the grocery, or just for a walk outside. upper 40s and low 50s with mostly sunny skies for the south bay peninsula and the tri-valley. i have you at 51 in the east bay and the north bay looking really good here at 47 degrees. the changes we'll be undergoing overt next two days is certainly quite a flip from what we have been used to. it's all about this area of high pressure helping to bring in

. >>> i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri tracking a chance of rain tomorrow. the details in about seven minutes. >>> we're going to show you some new video just into our newsroom, and it is tough to watch. this is the walgreens in oakland right there in downtown oak laplapoakland. what started out as a peaceful night for 5,000 people in oakland has turned into this. protesters looting this walgreens. this is new video that just came in. a lot of grabbing merchandise, and then running outside of that store. let's take a look from sky ranger. this is downtown oak lapd. you can see a large whether it's a dumpster fire or something else on fire there in oakland. that was difficult tonight because the police department said on our air that they really wanted to facilitate the peaceful protest here, but they would put their foot down, flex their muscles, so to speak, if this started to happen. and we are seeing it happen. you can see multiple explosions now, and the fear here and the hope really is not to have the police officers injured, not to have the protesters

let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. what are we seeing in the next 48 hours? >> well, we do have good news for a lot of people that thought today was definitely too warm for them. some big-time cooling over the next couple of days. you can see we're starting off with a look at the today temperature versus the records, and we did tie a record in concord. these are the brand-new revised numbers. hitting 96. the record that we tied was 96 set back in 2001. also the other hot spot was livermore at 96. the record still stands at 98 degrees. now, the number one change i'm tracking right now is the fog. we are totally fogged in in san francisco right now from our downtown camera, and that is good news because it helps to cool us off tomorrow with widespread 50s. by 1:30, not nearly as hot. 1:30 tomorrow afternoon, we're tracking 70s to low 80s inland. we will have more details on that and look at this. a chance of rain is hanging on. i'll sum it all up for you. we'll get you ready for the weekend and next week coming up in about 15 minutes. >> great, jeff. it looks g
