let's bring in jeff ranieri. we are trying to stay positive. what do you have for us? >>> when we look at things overall from this weekend to now it's all relative, right? we have seen some subtle changes. i know it's not down to the good category yet but signs of things beginning to improve. for much of the weekend everyone was in that very unhealthy category, that purple color. now we're down into the unhealthy from the north bay to the south bay. yes, it's still bad. we have the haze out here, but we're seeing signs of changes. let me get to that and to give you this reference point. i have to give you a wider look at the satellite and the three large fires producing the most smoke, you can see the plumes on the satellite view showing the smoke now lifting to the north and east so that's moving away from the bay area. and we're starting to see these changes from the system that is developing right on track just offshore. that's going to help to change our air quality. we'll have more details on that in our developing la nina and what that could mean coming up in 18

happening, jeff ranieri is back with us here. this could be the situation for a couple of days, possibly, right, jeff? >> it's very hour by hour, day by day, with the way the smoke is, because we have to get some higher containment numbers on these fires. we could see some changes by this weekend and early next week to get the air circulating and moving around. but right now, that's right, we're stuck with it. a look at our map, and you can see all of that gray over the land. that is the smoke that is coming from four different fires that basically surround the greater bay area. that's why we've had such a problem. in case you missed it i don't really, i wanted to show you why the sky had that sharp orange color for most of us. this is a picture from tiburon, looking towards what is usually san francisco. it has to do with the color spectrum and how the different wavelengths of those colors travel. colors like green, blue, indigo, violet, they don't travel as far. so these colors reflect off the smoke particles and bounce back up

let's bring in jeff ranieri with the timeline for us. jeff. >> and i really think tomorrow we're still in that good to moderate air quality range. it's this weekend when that wind would switch more to the north and the east that we could see some of that smoke getting pushed down into the bay area. we're getting this area of hot high pressure that will develop over the west, and what i'm looking at is the circulation around this. that's what could bring down some smoke. the august complex i just checked is only 38% contained, and that's why we could be dealing with some smoke. i don't think it's going to be the worst we have seen so far, but definitely expect some haze this weekend and we get that heat building in from the south. so what about the wind? i think you really have to go 1,000 feet and above to get those higher wind gusts of 15 to 40 miles per hour. for most of us, we'll be in that 5 to 20-mile-per-hour sustained wind range. so for many of us, we're not going to be feeling a ton of wind this weekend. you really have to go up

let's join jeff ranieri. jeff, the winds seem a bit calmer today and not as hot as yesterday, but still pretty warm out there. >> yeah, it's very, very warm, and also low humidity. so even though we did have the winds calm down and turn to more of a west-southwesterly demonstration, we are still finding plenty of flare-ups happening on the fire. you can see right now in our current wind map, we're only seeing winds anywhere from 6 to about 11 miles per hour. with the wind coming out of the west-southwest, look at this cal fire camera here. this is looking southeast towards angwin and you can see some of these higher cloud tops here or smoke tops, rather, from some flare-ups that are happening right now. even though, again, we've seen the calmer winds, it's just really not enough to give a major leg up to firefighters. right now, 76 degrees, so we have started to see a drop there near santa rosa. tomorrow we're up to 90 degrees and most of the hot spots have been in the north and also the southern side. next c

let's get right to our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff, we know this is challenging because it's tough to forecast. it's not that traditional elements that you're used to. what are you seeing, though, for this weekend? >> you're exactly right. it's minute by minute, hour by hour on this forecast, and it really looks like at this point we'll stay in that unhealthy range as we head through the weekend. right now a live look here in the left-hand side of my weather map, and you can see our live camera in san jose. very hazy off toward the distance as all our monitoring sites are in red, which is unhealthy air from the north bay to the south bay. it's also mixing in with some fog. the big, big problem we've had is the upper level winds. 20,000 feet to 30,000 feet up in the jet stream. they've been acting like a conveyor belt along with the surface winds coming from the north to the south, and it's been pushing the smoke all the way down here across the bay area repeatedly, again, like a conveyor belt. on top of this we've had something c
