ranney, you know, when dr. fauci today said essentially if you have only two shots, you are, um, not protected against omicron. um, you know, there are a lot of people in that situation, right, as i pointed out, right? the vast majority of this country. about 85, 86%, or 84% of americans are in that category. but one group in that koot gory just got their second shots. any young children 5 to 12 literally are just, in the past week, if they went in the first few days, right, fully vo vaccinated. so, do we have any sense of what that means if they -- for these young people who just recently got both shots? are they essentially unvaccinated against omicron, too? do we even know? >> we don't. so i will say i have one kid who just completed that first vaccine series. a 10-year-old. i also have a 13-year-old who got both of her shots more than six months ago. we don't, yet, have any idea about boosters for that 12 to 15-year-old age group. and we know very little right now about how protected they are against omicro

megan ranney. dr.an overstatement or do you think that's public health? >> that is something that is accurate and something we've called for for months. i would love to see an additional requirement of vaccination for all air travelers, not just for foreign internationals but for domestic travel as well. great strategy to reduce the spread of this disease. although it is certainly scientifically appropriate, this is logistically complex to do. i'm curious to see how the federal government proposes to keep track of folks after they've landed and ensure they actually complete that testing two to three days later. >> we've added a couple more countries, but 25 nations so far have reported omicron. not yet here in the united states, but listen, dr. ranney, this is dr. francis collins, head of the nih. he said they are going to be extremely cautious with this new variant, even though doctors are saying they're only seeing moderate cases, this doctor says we need to be careful because of the mutations. >> th

megan ranney. she is associate dean of epic health at brown university. hi, dr. ranney.t omicron appears less severe due to the baseline population. dr. gottlieb said it was 80% baseline immunity. what do you think? >> it's too early to draw firm conclusions about the severity of omicron. what most of us suspect is that the milder disease that folks are reporting does reflect the fact that in south africa and the u.k. and now in the u.s., we have a large population that are vaccinated. it's saying they are going to be about a week or two weeks out from having firm numbers about how bad omicron really is for the unvaccinated versus for those who are vaccinated, for whom all the signs are showing that this will be a mild infection. >> speaking of the u.k., there is this new study out of the u.k. showing that mutations that make omicron able to avoid antibodies may also reduce how it replicates in the lungs and causes severe disease. what could this mean in the long term? >> so this is a very preliminary study that has not yet been done in humans. it's really based on lab r

megan ranney, professor of emergency medicine. dr. ranney, straight to the cdc guidance. they say it is based on science. you say it is partly based on science, but partly not. explain what you mean. >> so the part that is based on science is the fact that there is accumulating evidence four vaccinated people that if we are asymptomatic, we are very unlikely to be infectious after about five to seven days. in an ideal world, we would also have a rapid antigen test that is negative. those tests that no one can get. we would have a negative rapid antigen test after that period to prove we're not infectious before we go back out into the world. that part for the vaccinated does make sense. the trouble is for the unvaccinated, the data doesn't really back up that they become noninfectious in five days and the cdc said everyone should mask up out in public for another five tdays. we know what happened in may when they dropped universal mask recommendations, nobody masked, vaccinated or not. that's where i'm quite worried about the new recommendations. >> what would you have do

megan ranney. she's an emergency physician and acadic dean at brown university's school of public health. dr. ranney, i know you were working in the er all day so i especially thank you for joining us with your time. so case lloyds, as you know personally at hospitals are surpassing what we saw last winter. but so far death and hospitalization aren't tracking as closely with the case rates we have seen in previous surge does that jive with what you are seeing on the ground? >> it does. listen, even today the only people that i admitted to the hospital for covid were people who were unvaccinated. and thanks to our tremendous vaccination campaign across the u.s. over the last year, about 60 percent of us have received both shots and a significant percentage have gotten the boosters. that is protecting us even in the midst of this surge. on top of that there is some preliminary evidence that omicron itself may be slightly more mild. but let's not kid ourselves. even a mild covid infection particularly

ranney, we've seen an uptick in vaccines and boosters we haven't seen in months.ts over the course of two or five days. what do you think is driving that? >> i think it's simple fear. we saw the same thing in the south and southeast this summer. at the height of the delta waves, when you see people near you getting sick or hospitalized or when you have this fear of a new variant, it's enough to overcome some of that resistance or some people who i talked to in the e.r., it's not even resistance, just the vaccine is the lowest thing on their list so when the fear gets higher the incentive to get your shot goes up. it may be the small, one hidden blessing from this variant that it protects the rest of us from delta that's already out there. >> one more thing before you go, the national institute of health, head francis collin says given the immune protection, omicron certainly won't be the last variant of concern. what does that mean? everyone's trying to figure out when does this end? how do we go back to normal? what does it mean when we know there are more varian

megan ranney, professor of emergency medicine.. we are in a much better footing than we were back then. let's just start with that point. >> that is exactly right. thanks to vaccines, the connection between cases and hospitalizations has been partially broken. so when you are seeing covid cases spread in an area with high vaccination rates, especially if there are high booster rates, most of those cases are not going to turn into hospitalizations, icu stays or deaths. however, here's the tough part, there's a lot of america that still is not vaccinated, and omicron seems to be breaking through the immunity from prior infections. there are a lot of folks at risk, and our hospitals across the country are at more of a breaking point because health care workers are burnt out. it's a little bit of good, and a little bit of bad as well. >> that's the case with a lot of these questions and answers. let me get to some from our viewers. of course this is a point at which there is a lot of uncertainty as things are changing woo change. we'r
