now i want to take a minute to explain to you the flood protection in use right now for the city of cedar rapids. the city is primarily relying on hesco barriers you see here. there's 10 miles of these barriers lining the city. city leaders say they're confident these will hold 26 feet. however water could barriers any moment. earlier today i spoke with mayor ron corbett. he tells me the city is working for a more permanent flood protection system. but that protection could cost about 500- million dollars. the city has asked voters twice to approve funding for flood protection. voters said no both times. recently, mayor corbett says federal lawmakers have approved funding... but have not state and they've provided funding mechanism unfortunately the federal government hasn't released any funds to do the construction or their piece of it so we continue to lobby our congress people and also the president and the office of budget and management office so maybe this event will d.c. to get those resources to construct permanent long term flood protection " again, hesco barriers are the main layer of

"as we wait for river levels to fall, to use water wisely. our water control facility is seeing increased sewer flows from the saturated ground and sewer water that's entered the system. any reduction will help our crews deal with the higher than normal flows into our wastewater treatment plant. live in seared rapids, kcrg. >> city of cedar rapids closed off a number of roads and bridges along the cedar river as well as projected flood zone. crews blocked off the edgewoodr road bridge north of ellis late yesterday afternoon. ellis road northwest has been shutt down for days. the cedar has not quite reached the bridge yet and it's closed down as a be the only bridge open in thei entire city. givee yourself plenty of extra time if you must cross the cedar river. east ofi the city. the u.s. highway 30 bridge will also' be opened but for many people, it's out of the way in many people in cedar rapids and many streets are closed or will be closed close to the river be. be aware of that. the ramps next to seared rapids are also closed right now. they're closed to i-73 and the wilson avenue ramps on the south and west side of the river. consider 33rd avenue if you're trying to access on the west side. of course of course, the i-380 bridge will stay open. many people whoof live along the cedar river will be out of their homes for most of the week. they asked everybody in the red area t

so this mural is sort of intended to convey the scope of grand rapids in the 1890's, which really was starting to become quite a large city with close to 80,000 people, and really the regional commercial, economic center for western michigan. inside theding rigell drugstore. this particular drugstore is not from grand rapids. it was originally in michigan, 1960's.as through the the rigell family actually donated the entire drug store and all of its content to the museum, despite the fact it is not a grand rapids's nest. it is one of the more accurate store reproductions we were able to have in the streets of old grand rapids because the rigell drugstore had all the same furnishings as when it was originally built around 1900. the rigell drugstore is kind of in a transition areas period -- transitionary period. the people would have been certified pharmacists with medical knowledge, but they are in a lot of cases, compounding their own prescriptions, medicines in the store. they would've had the ingredients they needed to make a particular medicine and could have put together, right in front of the customer. they also had

each morning at 10 a.m., cedar rapids city leaders will be holding a news conference until this passes -- we'll hear from mayor ron corbett and other point people in the city at that time. mayor, thank you for your time. you have a news conference this morning, what can we expect to hear from that? s the cedar river rises in cedar highest flood crest in city history: crpd is starting to mobilize officers to cope with road closures and to cover the city. the water department says the water supply should be safe with the current crest projections. they are encouraging people to use water carefully to limit stress on the water and wastewater system. with current projections, the crest could top 24 feet and if that happens homes and businesses will be impacted. at 24 feet the water starts to touch the bottom of the bridges downtown. the city is trying to put flood protection measures in historic flood of 2008 crested at 31 feet. streets in new bo, czech village and downtown may be closed on late saturday before the water gets to the roads. flood gates could start closing as early as late s

we are at the grand rapids public museum in the museum's furniture city exhibit. this is the oldest piece of grand rapids furniture in the museum's collection. it is a windsor chair made by a , ouramed william haldane best guess is around 1840. the first settlers don't start coming to grand rapids until about 1830. william haldane is in that first early group went to grand rapids is just a tiny village on the banks of the grand river. he is the first guy that steps up a woodworking, or making -- cabinetmaking shop as they called it. this first year is a treated to him. it is pretty primitive, made by hand. the spokes on the back were made with a spoke shave, instead of being turned on a laive. it was probably just a one-off that somebody paid him a buck or two to make a chair. people who arrived in town needed furniture for their house. it might not look like any thing special but it is the beginning , of the furniture industry in grand rapids. grand rapids became the furniture city in the 19th century and there were several different factors that combine to help g

cedar rapids city hall might not re-open for up to 30 days. the city says the building took on some floodwater, but they pumped out much of it. the damage was mostly to basement rugs and drywall. members of the american red morale high as people start to return home.
