let's bring in allie rasmus reporting now on the next phase of vaccinations in the valley. >> reporterfirst it was frontline healthcare workers and physicians and nurses and staff getting vaccinations earlier this week. now it's the turn of folks who work at assisted living facilities and nursing homes in santa clara county. at the fairgrounds today, the county office of public health set up a vaccination clinic at the expo center. the plan was to vaccinate 200 people there every day. workers are getting shots today in the next several days at various nursing facilities in the county. the clinic will be operating seven days a week. they started at 9:00 this morning. it comes at a difficult time for santa clara county. there is now an average of 1000 new cases of covid-19 in the county every day. 566 people are hospitalized in santa clara county at the same number, 566 have died since the start of the pandemic in the county. icu beds are in short supply. however, public health officer dr. sarah cody says the rollout of the first vaccines this week are reasons for cautious optimism. spot

let's bring in allie rasmus reporting live with how this update came days after san mateo public health officer said he's keeping some businesses and activities open for now. >> reporter: that's right. the message from the san mateo county chief of health this morning to the board of supervisors is that covid-19 cases are going up in the county. so are hospitalizations. but there is still sufficient space in san mateo county hospitals and the icu units. the icus in that county are at 33% capacity. that's part of the reason that san mateo county did not join five other bay area counties, san francisco, marin, alameda, contra costa and santa clara, in enacting a stay at home order earlier that the state of california required. that means that you can still dine outdoors. get a haircut or take your kids to the playground in san mateo. the chief of health warned that it is really just a matter of time before those activities are shut down, too, even in san mateo county. she said if icu capacity exceeds 85%, they are right now at 33%, they will have to comply with the seat stay at home order
