that's according to the latest rasmussen poll. scott rasmussen joins me now.t romney is the front runner but that has some good news tonight for newt gingrich. >> it certainly does. the first bit of news is mitt romney's support has barely budged. it's about the same as it was after the iowa caucuses. the person who is heading in the wrong direction at the moment, rick santorum. down 8 points from a week ago. megyn: what explains that? his performance in new hampshire? >> it could be that. there is an awful lot of people voting tactically. they are saying we are concerned mitt romney is running away with this. hopefully for some it will draw somebody else into the race. megyn: the new hampshire voters cared about electability and they believed mitt romney was the most likely to beat obama. what are you seeing on that front in south carolina. >> he's seen as the strongest potential candidate against barack obama. 23% say that's the man. 23% say newt gingrich. even among key party voters, those who are supposed to say my way or the highway. far away the new hamp

here is scott rasmussen, independent pollster, president of rasmussen reports,.com.s money. nice to see you scott. good morning to you and congratulations on the book. romney, 41%. what's that tell you? >> the most significant thing i found in looking through the numbers that among very conservative voters, that group supposed to be very resistant to mitt romney he is leading in florida. he has 20 9%. that puts him a few points ahead of santorum and gingrich. when you go to voters who are somewhat conservative, romney leads by 40 points. bill: that's interesting. he got the conservative vote in iowa to a degree. you saw a little bit trailing into new hampshire as well. you also asked, who would be the strongest against barack obama in a head-to-head match? this is what you find. romney at 55%? he is well above the field. what's that tell you? >> that's right. this has been a number growing for governor romney. it is the story that his campaign has been selling the whole time, this is the electable candidate. again, very conservative voters agree, 51% of the those who

let's take a look at rasmussen, a different national poll that shows a much bigger surge nationally form. he is now at second, 21%. and if we look at the average of all the recent polls, this is the real clear average, just to give you a perspective, average of all the recent polls and it takes some before iowa. there you see the average of the polls. okay. so, we're giving you a lot of polls, but the average of the polls in new hampshire, now this is the state of new hampshire. ahead of tuesday's primary. and there you see. romney holding on to a big lead. a little bit of an uptick for santorum in this average of polls. others are likely to come in the next few days showing santorum probably getting more of the bounce out of iowa. let's bring in the panel. bill kristol, editor of "weekly standard." juan williams, columnist with the hill and syndicated columnist charles krauthammer. bill, you heard the candidates today in new hampshire. talking about president obama. and actually, mitt romney sounded a lot like michele bachmann on the crony capita capitalism charge. perhaps he is moving

they have a rasmussen report right now live from new hampshire. welcome. what is your sense of first of all on santorum. is there a kind of fading of that glow? >> i don't know if i would call it a fading. there's not a continuation of the surge. all of the candidates not named mitt romney right now are looking to south carolina. governor romney is probably going to tighten a little bit so he might not win by 20 points. it will be a battle with the second and third place finishers much better han romney's margin. rick santorum doesn't appear to be heading to a tremendous finish in iowa. >> in that regard if santorum finishes fourth or fifth do you discount him? despite the fact that new hampshire is so different than south carolina does it effect south carolina? >> one thing we know for sure candidates go to south carolina there will be a lot of money spent down there a lot of advertising. leading up to the aspect of mitt romney's career i suspect he will get the same treatment as gingrich got in iowa. the question will be if mitt was damaged at all by tha
