thank you, guys, for being with us. 20 years ago today, ray kelly. hard to believe.nections between what happened then and what happened nine years later on september 11th. >> yeah. we missed it and no question about it, hindsight, of course, being 20/20. we should have done a lot more work as a nation following up we were talking before, the assassination in 1991 would have led what was directly to the '93 bombings and, of course, that didn't happen. so, it should have been a wake-up call in '93. obviously, september 11th, 2001, was a wake-up call and we've done a lot as a nation and as a city to protect ourselves. >> where do we sit now as a city and as a nation prepared for the next attack? how are we doing? >> obviously, much, much safer, but there are no guarantees. we, the nation has invested a lot of money in protecting ourselves. we've had 16 plots against this city since september 11th, 2001. so, we don't see a significant reduction or diminishment of the threat. we just had mohammed plead guilty this month to attempting to blow up the federal reserve bank l

ray's school that there were eight d.c. police officers patrolling it on a daily basis. mr. kelly heard of the d.c. opportunity scholarship program, and dedicated himself to making sure that ray and his three sisters could have access to a school that would provide them with a safe environment in which to learn. to give them an opportunity, in fact, so they could see college as an option. an opportunity that mr. kelly did not have. within two years at a private school, ray caught up to his classmates, and is now a student in college. and his sisters, who are here with us today as well, are attending the preparatory school of d.c. and are on a similar path to opportunity. now, i visited this school yesterday. it is amazing. it is making a real difference in the lives of kids who, without that school, could possibly be lost. and this is what is at stake. because now they have great teachers, terrific administrators, small class sizes, and a mission that said every kid's got to succeed. now, no one should deny ray or his sisters this opportunity. essentially what's going to happen, kelly, is that you will have ray conner, the head of boeing commerciales lead a team of boeing executives and engineers to a meeting of the federal aviation administration with michael fuerta, the head of the faa, and leaders within the faa, and being is going to lay out their plan for what they believe needs to be done to resolve the battery situation with the 787 dreamliner. and especially it comes down to accommodation of prevention and containment. and prevention in the form of redesigning the battery, the battery case, essentially taking greater steps to ensure that there are no batteries that overheat in the future or catch fire. and this containment aspect is if there is a situation in the future with lithium ion batteries, boeing will make design changes to, a, make sure that any fumes that come from a battery overheating or catching on fire are vented outside of the plane and also that that fire is contained within that area, that box in the apu section, the auxiliary power unit section of the airplane and that nothing else can catch on fire. th
