spokesman ray sullivan telling us, "there have been eight debates so far, the governor has participated in five of them, but there are 18 debates scheduled between now and the end of january." sullivan went on to say, "at some point, the candidates have to spend time out with voters in iowa, new hampshire, and south carolina. so i simply question whether 18 was a realistic number. that's all. we haven't ruled anything out at all." joining us now, democratic strategist james carville and erick erickson, someone excited by the perry candidacy when he first got in the race. erick, what do you make of this. do you think he'd be saying there are too many debates, we're taking up too much time with this stuff? >> of course not. and it looks like the end of january, there would be 21. i don't blame any of the candidates for saying in the december debates, most are on small networks and they're not going to be watched, yeah, they might want to skip one or two, not all of them. i think the bigger issue here, anderson, is the absolute lack of message discipline. he released his economic plan last

we had ray sullivan, spokesman for the perry team on friday, these reports were out there, brit and heould not deny they were considering skipping all. dedates or many of them after the one coming up on november 9th. on saturday they turn right around and go in a different direction. what do you think. >> i think he was considering it and apparently considered it and decided not to do that. look, these debates are frequently, typically coast sponsored by one of the state republican parties. so if you're going to say no to the state's republican party in whose primary or whose caucuses you're a candidate you can pretty well guess that won't go over very well and it is a mistake to do that. i don't think he has a lot of chance. i think he has to show up. he is trying to knock down expectations saying he isn't a great debater. unfortunately for him he knocked them down after his performances already knocked him down. so i'm not sure, i'm not sure that really helps him very much. he has a high hill to climb. bill: maybe goes back to the humor tilt for that. the impression you're running aw

ray sullivan is the communications director for one of them, and that is governor rick perry. ust be hearing this along with us now. ray, thank you for being here. last time you were on, i asked you if you'd like governor christie's endorsement, you said you would. it was not to be. your reaction? >> well, that's the way it works in this business sometimes. the northeast republicans are sticking together in this case. we've got a debate tonight that's supposed to talk about the economy. i've got a governor, governor perry, who's got the strongest jobs record in the country, six balanced budget, cutting billions in spending. that's really what the voters want to hear about, how to get this economy turned around. we feel like we've done that in the state of texas. governor perry's got an agenda to get america working again, and that's what we're going to talk about the next several hours tonight for the debate and then on the campaign trail going forward. meg what has governor perry been doing to prepare for this debate that is different from the way he prepared for the last coup

he'll do some but not necessarily all of the scheduled republican debates, according to ray sullivan,. he said we're about 60 days away from votes being cast. the candidates need to spend time in iowa during those town halls and spending a lot more time with the vote here's sometimes have the best questions and press the candidates the hardest. so it's clear that rick perry doesn't want to do a whole lot more debates. we'll see how many he does. there are at least a dozen in the works between now and january, early february. this whole thing could be resolved after iowa, new hampshire, south carolina, florida, if for example, mitt romney were to do really well in those four states. it could be over that quickly. on the other hand, if he doesn't necessarily do so well, it could go into february, march, and brooke, you'll remember four years ago when john mccain wrapped it up relatively quickly. but hillary clinton and barack obama, they went on and on including debates all the way through june. they were waiting for puerto rico to work their magic before barack obama won the democratic

sullivan. he's live at cnbc headquarters. brian, how does it look? >> you know, it looks pretty good, actually. i'm not going to say it's a great rayt was above wall street expectations and near the highest estimates. perhaps the better news is that, remember in august we got that big gooseegg, basically net zero jobs created? they recriesed august up to 57,000 jobs added, so the numbers both for september and august coming in better than expected and being revised higher. again, remember that 45,000 striking verizon workers came back online, so that did skew the number a little higher. overall, though, private sector payrolls were, indeed, up. you saw construction rise a bit. we need that. that's good news. one of the negatives, i guess, in the report is that government jobs tended to trend down again, and we're also seeing the u-6. it is not a submarine, it is the underemployed number, people who want a full-time job who are maybe just part-time. that inched up. but overall, guys, not a bad number. the futures for the stock market are looking pretty solid. and if we can just get a vanderbilt win, just a vanderbilt smackdown of th
