rebecca had been babysitting. she called her sister soon after. >> she said, i was in the bathroom and i heard this long crash and she said, i came out and saw that max was on the floor. she sounded upset but not frantic,hysterical. >> reporter: mary's husband doug spoke to rebecca the next day when the little boy was in critical condition in the hospital. >> i told her, it's not your fault, you know, don't blame yourself. and she's like, no i don't, i don't. i just have to be there for jonah. >> reporter: that night, mary had what would be her last conversation with her sister. they spoke about max's condition. >> she said, you know, it is very hopeful, so keep praying, because things are looking hopeful. >> reporter: and otherwise it was a completely normal conversation? she sounded just like herself? >> yes. founded, because we were talking about thanksgiving, we were talking about christmas. >> reporter: but investigators say at 12:50 a.m., rebecca checked her voice mail and received the grim message that max

but rebecca says she doesn't regret it. borrowing was the only way to achieve her career dream.n chernov, cnn, new york. >> we're told the only way to compete in this lean, mean economy is to be educated. we also know education is going to cost you more than ever and take years to pay off. kids are graduating with $27,000 in student loans. job prospects are pretty slim. it doesn't mean you shouldn't make that investment. it just means you have to manage it. john, many spring grads are going to get their first student loan bills in the mail in i think november or december. what happens if you don't pay, john? >> not paying your student loan is bad news. it's the loan we don't think about before acquiring for four or five years. if you don't make the payment, the lender is going to quickly start reporting you as being diligent we know on the loan and will eventually put it in default. defaulting on a student loan is very, very different than defaulting on any other type of consumer loan. >> why is that, is it because the federal government backs so many of these loans? >> that's e

rebecca was happy and healthy. beliefs. >> we believe rebecca was killed, and we owe it to her to find what really happened to her. >> reporter: the sheriff's department ruled there was no evidence of murder, no fingerprints or dna but there was a bizarre message scrolled across the bedroom door, "she saved him. can he save her." not own investigators know what that means. the court reporters indicate there were cuts and bruises on rebecca's body. >> she was fighting something or struggling against something to have those contusions. >> reporter: investigators don't so see them as significant and neither did a medical examiner we asked to review the case. >> i don't think you can reasonably come to the conclusion based on evaluating these abrasions and bruises that it means that a struggle occurred. >> reporter: but the family also has questions about a woman's cry for help, a neighbor reportedly heard that night. detectives investigated that possibility but say it was teens playing on a mereby beach instead. >> we

it all came back to rebecca.e. >> reporter: but shacknai's letter states the circumstances of rebecca's suicide were so unusual and upsetting, that it was difficult to accept the hard facts presented. investigators say the alleged suicide was prompted by max's death. two days earlier while rebecca was baby sitting, the 6-year-old boy fell down the stairs. he later died from his injuries. >> you can just imagine this woman, who is tortured by this about this young child dying. you can see why she may have committed suicide. >> reporter: but family members remain adamant that suicide is not an option. >> you mean to tell me somebody who is doing really well all 32 years of her life in a matter of two hours, is going to decide to do all this elaborate plans. >> reporter: shacknai's letter addresses rebecca's family. and says he can understand the pain they are experiencing. jonah shacknai was at the hospital sitting by his dying son's bed. jonah shacknai's friends and family say this has been a twin tragedy. two dea
