to figure out if that is any help at all, let's kick it over to rebecca stevenson. >> it's not goingo make much impact on the fires that are being fought in oregon and idaho, because by the time the storms get up there the rain will evaporate. even though we had a significant amount of rain, and it did made some headway in kansas and parts of colorado, we're starting to see the drought redevelop mid-month and we're going to continue with dry conditions. we'll continue to have the fuel sitting ripe and ready as we move up into the southern portion of the pacific north. that is south oregon, south idaho. that is where we're going to -- [ technical difficulties ] hiking through this really tough terrain, through the cascades and getting back to the mountains of southern oregon, trying to put out some of the new fires we expect will be struck as we get into that lightning this afternoon. we'll monitor that for you, and show you where we expect more rain in the southeast. >>> the army psychiatrist who could be sentenced to death for silling 13 people at fort hood in 2009 has rested. >> he

. >> meteorologist: hello, i'm meteorologist rebecca stevenson.et's dress the concerns about air quality from this massive fire that's burning so hot and so fast. almost directly east of san francisco. up into the mountains we're seeing that smoke. it will begin to get thick and settle into the valleys. on this map down in california there is a little gray area he here. practically surrounding the area of the fire. but this particular area of gray here that you see is an air quality advisory. the air is so thick and so heavy with smoke that we have air quality that is down to unhealthy now. it was unhealthy for sensitive groups, but now it is unhealthy for all of us. but especially those with heart issues, and those with asthma or the elderly or small children. you're going to be encouraged not to go outside and not to get much exercise in this vicinity today because of that thick smoke. the areas of red are showing you this is where we have fire weather concerns because of gusting winds and thunderstorms moving up. before we get to that let me sh

rebecca stevenson with your forecast. >> we have had gusty winds. at last count we had 45 large fires, that fire management inter agencies have been keeping understand suppression or attempting to. these fires stretch all across the west the. we have been getting some rain in some of these areas but the biggest concern is a lot of the showers and thunderstorms we are getting bringing in the rain, it's bringing in lightning strikes and a number of them. so we have fire weather watches, as you can see in red here from nevada, from oregon, northcare california, idaho and montana. concern is that the new lightning strikes will spark new fires. thunderstorms also bring in those eratic winds. keeping the fires going, fanning the flames, in fact, we had what's called crowning and spotting fires, meaning that the fire would leap from the top of the trees to the next tree, to the next tree, miles down and, also, the spotting, that's when the trees began to torch, and that just spreads embers even fafrther with those gusty winds. >> air quality is something e

. >> good evening, i'm meteorologist rebecca stevenson. we've been seeing most of the west in extreme drought conditions from nevada to parts of hoird and oregon. -- idaho and oregon. wildfires are spreading due to gusty winds an more lightning strikes. in fact for the month of august, we had 24 fires that were started by lightning strikes. we have 14 large wildfires occurring. this does not count new lightning strikes that may have occurred tonight. northwest, eastern idaho, stretching southeast into montana. we've had such dry conditions that the swath of lightning storms bringing hundreds of strikes, is tracking out, our red flag warning indicating the favor lightning started fires, is favored for idaho as well. in addition to all these warnings stretched out across the northwest we've got dense smoke. big concerns as the overnight hours temperatures cool, the air gets a little heavier and sinks and smoke gets very thick, settles in the valleys and makes it difficult to breathe. those of you who have problems already with asthma and suc

. >> i'm rebecca stevenson.ain is tapering off for the southeast bringing relief to florida up to georgia and south carolina. oyou can see the rain tapering off over the gulf coast. where we have it moving from the south and settling in to places like nevada, utah and the pacific northwest. lightning strikes with the thunders and we have had a lot of strikes right up in the oregon cascades on the east slopes. concerns here, because we have very dry conditions. wild fires still in place across parts of oregon and washington. in idaho and nevada and tracking the wild fires in california as well. what we need is a lot of rain with these storms. overall, we are getting some coming down because we have a tropical storm that is falling apart. it will not make landfall, but it is sending moisture our way into the southwest. it is very heavy rain with the particular storms and it is turning into humidity as moves into the midwest. places like minneapolis to oklahoma, you are sticky and muggiy today. all that rainfall is

i'm meteorologist rebecca stevenson.bor day weekend, typically end of summer and we've got some nice summer temperatures and some nice summer thunderstorms too. we're looking it to be hot once again especially in the midwest. 91 in denver, triple dirgt digin texas and oklahoma. make sure you drink your water. it's going to stay hot again with only slight cooling as we get into the day tomorrow. and still close to 80° west of the cascades for washington and oregon and low 80s for los angeles. then as we get into our labor day itself, monday, that's when we'll get a little bit cooler from three to eight degrees or so. and rain showers moving into the east coast, heavy rain showers, too. heavy showers tracking that direction into the carolinas and virginia, some of these are bringing in brief heavy downpours and a lot of lightning. what the story is really is, we've got two fronts and one front is moving through bringing showers to the northeast today? hit and mission -- today, hit and miss, as it works its way slowly eastw

. >> hi, i'm meteorologist rebecca stevenson. fire and thunderstorms still the story in the desert southwest. we're going to expect this all the way through labor day weekend. we're working up through southern california, nevada, and we do have flash flood watches continuing for the days ahead. as we take a look at the amount of rainfall we'll see showers in the next three days. we do expect to get into later sunday and monday and have the increase of rainfall here into the east coast especially as we get into the northeast as well where we've been a little drier, well, it doesn't feel dry, it's pretty humid, but we'll get that rain moving later sunday into monday. over the course of the overnight hours we'll start out dry and still very warm in the midwest. low temperatures not really low. they're hovering right around the mid 60s to 70 dress. 70 degrees. we were oh close to 100 in so many stops. we're heading there again. if we went coast to coast it will feel better around the seattle area where we're going to have the sunshin

. >> meteorologist: i'm meteorologist rebecca stevenson.re tracking storms riding up through the west, right over high pressure in place, bringing in storms into the midwest and also more heat. the problem is that we've got the moisture riding up to the north through north dakota, over into wisconsin, and that's where we're looking for not only some potential severe thunderstorms this afternoon, but also we're looking for that heat advisory and excessive heat warnings to continue because the combination of humidity, high temperatures in the 90s very uncomfortable to be outside. not only that, it's down right dangerous. you can look at the high temperatures that we're expecting back to the mid to upper 90s. it will feel like 100 to 105 degrees in the central midwest stretching down to oklahoma. it will be a hot day here but slightly cooler in other areas. what will bring cooling air is some of those thunderstorms rolling through just like we had yesterday. now as we look at our storm track you can see how it's bringing up that moisture. it's

reporter: the laws do not go tonight 10:00 eastern on al jazeera america.ç] hi, i'm meteorologist rebecca stevensonen record breaking heat in the mid wet, and we are doing to continue to get this even through tomorrow. two temperatures today were so hot, you add in the humidity, and what it feels like up to 100, to 105. we have a high of 106 in minneapolis today. and the heat advisory, or the accepted heat warnings will continue through the day tomorrow. we will finally start to get a little bit of cooler air, trying to work its way into the end of the week. so it will be hot here, and just be primed and ready for some thunderstorms to roll through. temperatures now just cooling off. even for tulsa you are still at 97 degrees. now tomorrow's temperatures back into the 90 pes. to the west, will be starting to warm up more after today's rainfall. as temperature spikes when we get the sun tomorrow. and on the east coast, ton sticky side. we are seeing the rain push offshore. we are seeing rain also from north dakota. we had a severe thunderstorm watch earlier. north dakota over to wisconsin tomorrow,

i am meteorologist rebecca stevenson. we are starting with more rain showers from the southwest over toward the midwest. the humidity is creeping up, but the good news is, we are not going to get the humidity for the northeast. this is one area that we are seeing showers move out. we are clearing out and cooling down just a little. so it's going to be a very nice day in the northeast and the mid atlantic for that matter. cleveland only hitting 73 degrees today. in new york and boston will mainly be low to mid-80s. pretty comfortable outside. as we look at the new york forecast when we get through the weekend, we are not looking for much rain right now. we've got this nice little dry stretch. as we move farther south, it's a different story, especially around florida, georgia, south carolina. overnight, we have been seeing flash flood warnings for a lot of these areas as the rain is coming on very heavily. we will expect that to continue off and on with showers and thunderstorms becoming a little more scattered as we get t

. >> rebecca stevenson is back with a check of the weather next, and coming up, america tonight withoey chen. >> showers and thunderstorms were very specific in location across the united states tonight. we had them riding through the west, up unto the midwest, and then down into parts oif southeast, be tough central portion of the united states stayed mostly dry, albeit on the hot humid side, but dry. right now we are looking at showers and thunderstorms just hammering new mexico. you have flash flood warnings in place because of these. and that includes parts of southern california. now this flash flooding coming from the showers are coming from a storm that is just falling apart. at one time it is a tropical storm, but it is headed to the north. the moisture feed will continue to ride around high pressure, so we get another good hot day with a lot of humidity in the midwest. we will stay cooler for the west. which will continue off and on, and even the northeast is going to start to see a fur showers popping up as this moisture continues to ride over towards the eastern side of th

. >> meteorologist: i'm meteorologist rebecca stevenson.e tracking a storm that has been developing into a tropical storm. you can see it move right by china. right now it's bringing more rain, gusting winds. and we have waves up to 16 feet that are moving right across the area of the coast line. so china has had it's fair share of these storms. this particular one is expecting to move to the north-northwest. in fact, maybe be it to taipei by the time we get into tomorrow evening. then it's slowly going to continue its track up towards the aleutian islands of the alaska and then around the top of the pacific ocean. that means it will be heading to the pacific northwest, but that's a week out. a week from now parts of british columbia, the moisture from that tropical storm will be coming your way. so we do monitor storms in that manner, see how far they are out towards china. watch them move across the pacific ocean, and tells us how much rain maying falling in the states. we've got some rain with a little disturbance. most of it is for seat

china right now, and i'll show you coming up. ç] >> meteorologist: hello, i'm meteorologist rebecca stevensonhave a typhoon that is approaching the shore of china right now with wind gusts of 95 mph. it is compared to a hurricane at stage one, and we're looking at typhoon trami, that has already killed eight people because of rainfall and flooding in the philippines. it has tracked across taiwan, and you can see that it is moving onshore into china at this time. this is packing a punch, and it's so much rain on top of an additional iphon typhoon utor tt moved in last week. we're watching this one closely. we also have rainfall as we look at florida. they have severe thunderstorms warnings that have gone into effect from bradenton, florida, up into tampa. this is dumping a significant amount of rain in a very short period of time all along the florida coast line and the gulf coast. we're seeing the showers also work their way up into the carolinas again. a place that does not need much more rain because you've had so much already this season. as we take a look at our radar and clouds for the g

i am meteorologist rebecca stevenson.e tracking showers and thunderstorms that have popped up with the daytime heating across much of the central and eastern portion of the states. we are seeing some become severe in criteria especially as we look at ones coming across minnesota and wisconsin. these are getting reports of hail, up to golf ball size. one of wind gusts reports as well. if we go to our storm report map, you can see here that the wind gusts and the hail are in clusters from storms that are traveling to the south. and that happened comesing across minnesota but also in parts of ohio down towards kentucky. so it's turning into somewhat of a stormy afternoon, evening, into the midwest, but we are also seeing quite a bit of rain in other parts, too. first, i want to give you an international look of what's been going on with tropical storm konray. this developed right around taiwan and it brought in excessive amounts of rainfall. we have had several typhoons just in a matter of weeks tracked near china. we will s
