month falls. when you have a recovery, it should go up. more people should be hired each month. during this recovery, we actually have fewer people hired each month on average than we had during the recession. so it fell prior to the recession. then it went down even more during the recovery. well, how can you have any jobs being added when you are hiring fewer people now each month then you had during the recession. the way to think about it is a water level in the pool. water coming in, water going out. water coming in is higher. the water going out is quick. so at what reykjavÍk with their jobs? what usually happens is that during a recession, people don't quit their jobs. there is an obvious reason. they are worried that they won't get a job somewhere else. so they hang onto the jobs that they have. but the problem is the longer the recession, the more people are hanging onto jobs just because they have to and not because they are really happy with the job. so there's a lot of pent-up job demand. when the recovery starts, rates go up. they have gone down even more than they d

month. which is both much better than expected. is the recovery picking up steam?arly to say that, though that was a good jobs report. there were some findings in the jobs report that pointed in another direction in terms of the long-term unemployment. picked up a little bit in the length of long-term unemployment was longer. generally this is a good jobs report. i don't think we can say we are in the midst of a robust recovery. we are still growing at perhaps .1%. that may be revised. but there is no sign, not enough signs that the economy is really taking off in the way it did say under ronald reagan. >> chris: chuck, the jobs number don't reflect the sequester. these are the february jobs numbers. they may reflect the doom and gloom, the hype about this, because there were certainly people who laid off private companies that laid off people in anticipation. but the white house maintains that as this sequester begins to take hold, as we get the furloughs and layoffs it will affect the economy. >> that's what they say. to back it up is the cto projection. >> congr

the recovery's gaining traction. over the last 36 months, we've added private sector jobs.he last five months we've had over 200,000 jobs added. so this is a sign thought economy is moving in the right direction and we need to avoid self-inflicted wounds. we need to do everything to keep up this progress. >> one thing i find interesting is we obviously see amazing growth on casa, the dow reaching record high levels, but that has not translated into hiring on main street, sort of real increases in profit margins but not necessarily bringing new people to the work force. when do you expect to see that divide narrow, where these numbers going down, these massive amounts on wall street going up will actually lead to some real stanley hiring? >> well, we want to build on the progress that we've seen. the longer the recovery keeps going, the more confidence will come back, the more workers will be going back to work. the unemployment rate fell to the lowest it's been since 2008. so we want to build on that progress, and a stronger job market will mean stronger income growths, and

recovery? and how many -- how many months in a row do you want to see numbers like this in order to feel like we'reg the needle, that we actually could start change the fed's behavior? >> part of the problem is we don't understand the dynamic of the declining participation rate. we've done three of the past several months, we've done north of 200,000. at the same time the participation rates continue to fall. we know that some of that is the result of the aging of the population. another piece of that is discouraged workers. i think you're going to have to do 200, 250, even 300 for several months to come, and i happen to know the federal reserve believes it has a large margin of error before it gets to a point where slack in the labor market decreases, and you have a problem with -- with wage-driven inflation and that's the thing it's on the lookout for. >> rick, i'll play devil's advocate by asking a question that probably has no answer and needs to be asked anyway. where do you think unemployment would be if there was no fed buying program at this point, no kweezing? >> oh, i think -- of all the

recovery. we have seen 15 consecutive months of increasing home prices. prices are expected to rise 8% this year alone. so if you're in the market for a home, this may be the time to get in the game. it depends where you want to buy. good news. people are buying houses again. the prices are going up. >> they are. >> i saw a report that in nevada, a state that was probably hit the hardest by the housing bubble, foreclosure starts were up 334% in february. a number of other states where there have been huge spikes. so help me figure out what has been going on? movie the real issue is the correlation between housing market and the unemployment rate. so if you look at nevada's unemployment rate, it is at 9.7%. it is no longer the highest unemployment rate in the country. but 9.7% is pretty high. what you're going to see is a lot of these foreclosures happening, because quite frankly, people want to go buy property, invest in property where the jobs are. no jobs, they won't buy the properties snrm my folks in connecticut have had their house on the market for

months or so. we are in the early stages of a recovery of housing. we have a lot of ground to capture. we think it is one of the companies that is best positions. when it reported earnings they reported an 80% back log for the next year. >> let's get you other picks. ford. tell us what is the attraction there? >> the auto market like the housing market has a lot of catch up to play. ford is an interesting play because not only is it going to recover based upon the rebuilding of the auto fleet in the country but also a housing play. the area that is most attractive within ford is the pick up division, the cars that the contractors are buying. if we are right that the housing market is going to do well and the auto market is going to recover then ford is going to work. >>> let's get your next pick. oracle, a real surprise because that stock got hammered last week. you were buying shares yesterday. what are you seeing that other people are not? >> very controversial pick. the stock is down 10% or so since the earnings report. we think the software portion of the technology cycle is sound.
