we have done training around the city a partnership with the red cross. one challenge was people showing up. we did advertising and people didn't necessarily come to the presentations. because it requires more than putting up a sign and it requires more contact than our department has. people in the building have to encourage their neighbors to come to these trainings. back to disaster kits. we have a grant from the hospital council to purchase disaster buckets from the red cross. it's not many. our focus is on low income families. family and child care providers. we are looslooking at organizeds like day care centers and providing them with supplies. so they're available after a disaster. that's one way we are addressing that. >> did you have a follow up to that? >> you keep saying turn off the gas. i've tried to get a hold of pg and e. a lot of the meters have frozen nuts or whatever you want to it. i tried to get pg and e to look at the one in my house and says it's impossible to shut off. how do we get pg and e to address the fact the old meters in fr

of the american red cross, gail mcgovern came to the red cross two years ago during a very critical point during our organizations history. and from the first day that she walked in the door with us she made it very clear to all of us that she wanted to invig race the very venrabble red cross brand. gail has done a great deal for the organization and along with overseeing high profile disaster responses, including the recent quakes in haiti, gail has worked towards streamlining our red cross operations and enhancing the organizations financial stability. and probably most importantly to all of us here in the room today, she has been an absolute champion of using the social web to cultivate a community of red cross supporters, and to communicate with those affected by disasters. prior to joining the red cross, gail was a faculty member at the harvard school of business. served as the president of fidelity first investments and also an executive vice president for the consumer market divisions at at&t and she has been recognized twice by fortune magazine as one of the 50 most powerful women

we gave a million dollars to the red cross. we take active role in nert training. provide fund to help them. i was surprised about involved with michael's group another outstanding program. for us to engage in disaster recovery from the standpoint things will be better when we get there. we provide what's called public safety training. that's if you have a wire down or a gas leak what do you do as a citizen? as a neighbor? as a community. we provide that training from the standpoint of safety. that's the bottom line of what we are trying to do is to create a safe environment. the folks that are available to provide the training across the city here but we provide it to emergency responders, local law enforcement, fire services. we provide it to community groups themselves. if it's a community group a safe group and/or nert group we will provide that training for individuals. the other as an organization for us to take care of business during an emergency. for us to take care of your needs to get power on, we have to have aggressive emergency response planning for o

we worked with the red cross, unicef, the state department, and others. we incorporated the chile finder app. with the gulf coast oil spill, we had a campaign where we asked the users of facebook to share their stories about the oil spill and highlight the ways that people on facebook were helping to make a positive impact. we also partnered with cnn. eric was my counterpart for this. we work with them on the larry king telethon to raise money. we were part of the social suite. celebrities were interacting with facebook users. it was a phenomenal thing. before and during the show, there were more than 1200 likes posted on the disaster relief page. the next morning, facebook users helped to raise more than $1.8 million during the telethon.

the american red cross sent in multiple shipments of donated blood. some of of the blood arrived by cab. >> some of them came by taxi. some of them came by the regular courier. >> reporter: hospital residents sprinted from the lab to the operating room carrying the life-saving cargo. >> our trauma service is a well oiled service. they have drilled us in the blood bank and the transfusion service to be prepared for exactly these type of emergencies. >> reporter: during surgery on friday night, officer young required 60 units of blood. that's about 120 cups. so how much is that? well, consider this. a newborn baby has about one cup of blood in his body. the average adult, 20 to 24 cups. officer young's story has inspired many around the bay area to donate blood in his honor. >> i thought i would come in and let the red cross do what them with umbrellas. >> reporter: many donation came from the san francisco police department. officer young required a total of 100 units of blood so far. and keep in mind the bay area is always short of blood, especially d
