it became a red flag watch, now a red flag warning. the reason is the winds are expected to kick up again and bring the threat of the wildfires quickly spreading southward, expecting the dry, northerly wind. the tubbs fire, 34,000 acres. the adobe fire, over 7,000 acres, the atlas fire growing at over 40,000 acres. as of now, the threat of this spreading is going to spark up that concern, which is why the warning is in place for 5:00 p.m. tonight through 11:00 p.m. tomorrow. we are expecting the gustiest conditions, unfortunately, to be in the north bay mountains and east bay hills. with the relative low humidity, this is a concern. we are talking about all those evacuations with all those places south of all those wildfires currently burning. i'll have an update on what to expect in terms of the wind coming up in a bit. >> thank you. 4:32 now. new this morning, this is a new tool that people in santa rosa have to see if their homes are still standing. the city of santa rosa has a new interactive satellite map of the devastated cities.

we have a red flag warning due to the wind speeds picking up.drier air is coming into the bay area from the north. our north bay hills east bay hills, santa cruz mountains are under the red flag warning through 5:00 p.m. thursday, wind speeds at 15 thirp to 30 miles per hour gusting to 40 miles per hour. dry conditions expected for us again, talk about the humidity, it recovers overnight so we are in the 30s and 40s for a lot of locations in the north bay zone. as we go through the day our latest models are showing drier conditions, single digits by 1:00. humidity is down to 9% in napa tomorrow. 15% in santa rosa, it stays that way for a few hours, then we have more moisture coming in tomorrow night. coming up we talk more about what is in store when the red flag warning expires thursday at 5:00 p.m. and when we will see improving conditions. >> thank you. >>> a strength of evacuation centers are opening for the people forced from their homes by the fires, so many mandatory evacuation orders. we are at one of the centers in american canyon where

as the winds begin to dry up the air mass, the red flag warning, i want to point out, this is a new red flag warning. this is the third. an initial one on sunday that got extended. then another one yesterday that did expire and we have a new one that will take place from 5:00 p.m. tonight through 11:00 p.m. saturday with the strongest gusts expected in the hillside area. let's look at the time line. i really want to take you through this. this is going to be a very important time line. 5:30 a.m., the winds remain calm and stay calm. that will help. this will be around daylight hours. if you notice, 10:00 p.m., we see a shift. increase in the wind speeds from the no, sir-northeast at 15 miles per hour. take a look at this. unfortunately, into the overnight hours, between the 2:00 a.m. hours, 2:30 hour, fairfield, we are talking 32-mile-per-hour gusts, possibly. napa, 30 miles per hour. then it will remain that way the next couple hours. unfortunately, with all these active fires burning, if you are south of that, be on high alert. why is that? you can see the fire is off to the north. th

the red flag warning. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall for an update on the winds. >> we are having calm winds. the red flag warning begins this evening. the highest winds will be tomorrow morning. we have a little bit of time here to try to get a little more containment. i wanted to show you exactly where these four fires are as we look at the one, the atlas fire, just to the south of yountville, that's the atlas fire moving into solano county. the partridge fire to the south of there and we talked to bob, near the nuns fire in sonoma county and the tubbs fire has been affecting parts of santa rosa. the red flag warning, once again, increases the fire danger as the winds increase and the humidity drops. winds coming in from the north-northeast at 20-30 miles per hour starting this evening and peaking tomorrow morning. the gusts may reach over 50 miles an hour for the mountain ridges, the hill tops and that's where we will see the highest gusts. the humidity will be going down once again. we'll

we will have a red flag warning, but there are different kinds of red flag warnings. to see wednesday night and thursday is a red flag warning, but it should be manageable and nothing like what we experienced sunday night. this is live, and i want to show you that live picture's kind of help with this because you get a feel of how wide this is. you see a house there and you see the terrain, and you see the smoke blowing in a positive direction in that it is blowing toward the east. it is an on show that's make on sure flow right now, and the air quality in the zones are not as bad because it was blowing over santa rosa yesterday. now it is blowing in a different direction. it is also dispersing better. there are numerous fires in the north bay, and firefighters are fighting them actively. but there are so many fires in california that you are not seeing air support for this. this is probably because this is burning to the top of the heel. maybe they have or to cut some fire lines. this is actually in tall trees now and this is what you call crowning. fortunately, this

red flag warning not in effect in about an hour from now. winds are dying down and coming out of the westerly direction. that gives you a higher humidity. that's great news, right, for firefighters. and you have a good day tomorrow. after that, when i say good, the winds will be west, temperatures will be on the mild side, humidities will be up, firefighters will be jumping on this. but as we get into saturday morning, we are looking for a red flag warning that will go back very similar to the one we had last night. winds this time i think will mix down to the surface and have gusts to maybe 35, 40. maybe 50 miles an hour in the higher elevations. so more of a at least at this point forecast of a forecast robust event for saturday morning. so that is in our minds cal fire's minds, that's the moment. that saturday morning period very important. just like last night was important. we got through that. now we get through saturday morning, that's very important, as well. air quality slowly going to get a little better through time. but it's goin

the red flag warning is sparking people's concerns and it should., once again, expected to be gusty, almost as gusty as the conditions we saw on sunday when the fire initially broke out. this will kick in from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. saturday. i want to take you through this. it's very important. calm winds remain and will stay fairly calm, at least throughout the early afternoon and into the evening hours. just after the dinner time portion, look at this, by 10:30 tonight, we start seeing an increase in those winds, 18 miles per hour in napa. fairfield, 25 miles per hour. if we take a look at this, once again, the overnight hours at about 2:30 a.m., we are talking possible gusts of 30 plus, 40, 50 plus in higher elevation areas. napa, santa rosa, concord, and along the coastline, we can expect to see gusty conditions. that's what's really going to bring a major concern. we have a ton of active fires. right now, the tubbs fire, over 34,000 acres. atlas fire, over 40,000 acres. the fires, the winds, unfortunately, have been a big impact when it comes to s

the red flags into place until 8:00 a.m.. the winds are generally light out there and assuming that the national weather service will allow this to expire for the north bay hills and the east bay. so santa rosa is reporting a light east breeze. t east breeze. hillsborough from the north and over areas like here, the humidity is lifting up. and that's a good things, because the atmosphere will dry out here and help with the fires. the humidity is at 26% here and then the winds shift from the east bay. we have a relative humidity at 23% here in the north area of oakland and diablo. so it's dry for this time of morning. as we get into the afternoon, the winds are expected to remain generally light. as we get into the second part of the day, notice the flow to the east and that's good news with the smoke, because it will continue to move to the pacific and not towards the central or south bay. that was the big concern yesterday. that all the smoke would push into the south bay, but it pushed it to the west and out to the pacific.

there have been red flag warning for winds.nformation that we have from out in the field is that the winds were lower than predicted. the conditions were more favorable than predicted. i don't have any hard numbers to give you. we don't get number updates until daytime. the information we are getting from the field is they are making good progress and they were able to do good work out there. we are really, really, happy about that. >> we hope that continues. what is the biggest thing you are up against today? >> caller: for fire purposes, obviously, this entire time they have been fighting the weather. the terrain and the access concerns, there's other issues that complicated this entire fight for them from the get go. but the weather is the big deal. we want to make sure that the humidity goes up and the temperature goes down and the winds stay down. as far as law enforcement side of things, we are maintaining or haven't looked at any evacuation zones in the county. we are heavily patrolling those. looting has not been a wide

so with a red flag warning going up later this evening, it's for all of these areas shaded in red. a red flag warning means that we will have lower humidity and increased winds, and that will increase the danger of some of these wildfires that we already have ongoing that could spread, especially in different directions so with the winds coming in from the north at about 20 to 30 miles per hour, we will have gusts in some of the ridges up to 50 miles per hour. that could cause things to change very rapidly as we go throughout the rest of the evening. if you have wildfires just to the north of you, you must be on alert. have that bag packed and ready to move. embers may move to the south and things could go very downhill quickly as we go into tonight. now, the winds are expected to pick up after a5:00 this evening, but the worst of the wind will be before sunrise. unfortunately, that's when it's dark and you won't be able to see a lot of what's going on. people are expected to move out of harm's way before things go downhill. we'll continue to monitor those wind speeds and also the

i've been talking about that red flag warping.nfortunately now it appears we are dealing with a number of reported fires across the area. and the current temperatures right now are actually warming up compared to what we saw earlier. the reason for that, the winds are starting to pick up. just like the radar showed. napa 73. santa rosa 73. so we're talking about this fire, the atlas fire in the napa area, look at the temperature trend for napa. we're talking about temperatures that will be in the 60s. they will start dropping overnight. unfortunately the threat of that wind is very real. we're talking about wind speeds of 20. 30 plus miles per hour right now at this hour in napa. right near where that fire is. and unfortunately we're seeing dusts 40 plus miles per hour expected to increase into the overnight hours. pair that up with relative low humidity and we're dealing with a dangerous combination that unfortunately is not going to help in the fight against that fire or any other fires that might spark up overnight. the red fla

some outward areas, let's talk about the red flag warnings.been mentioning the red flag warnings since friday into saturday. it looks like all these highlighted areas. we are talking the north bay mountains, the east bay hills, the santa cruz mountains are expecting to see an increase in winds from the north-northeast. 15-20 plus miles per hour with gusty conditions at 30-40. i was looking ahead at the models. here is a quick look. we could see sustained winds of 30 plus in some areas, including orinda at 31 miles per hour. when talking the fire danger, we zone in on the mountain hillside areas because the dry winds are very dry. what that does is, you have seen over and over again, a very small brush fire can quickly spread. the overnight hours tonight and early monday morning, look at san francisco. 29 miles per hour with gusts up to 30 plus miles per hour. napa, in the 30 range. livermore, 15, 20 plus in the south bay. the winds will carry over at least through monday. so, as we head into monday and tuesday, we will keep the red flag warnin

what does a red flag warning mean? a red flag warning means that the weather conditions in the highlighted areas have the perfect mix and combination of a fire quickly starting or quickly happening or quickly spreading in that area. so it means that you're at an elevated risk of a fire starting or quickly spreading in that area. it does not mean that that is where the wildfires burning right now in the north bay will spread. so i don't want you to get confused because i did have some folks ask me on twitter. i want to bring back up that humidity. why does this humidity come into play after the winds taper off because i want to take you through this timeline. right now, we have seen that humidity decrease. it recovers overnight and when the winds kick in, it dries out that air mass and drops that relative humidity yet again and that's exactly what's going to happen tonight. by about 10:30 a.m., right at the peak of those winds, when we could see gusty conditions ranging above 35 miles per hour, look at napa. 13% humidit

now, let's talk about that red flag warning.e still keeping this red flag warning in place is because that system that kind of cools us down as early as thursday, it's going to interact way ridge of high pressure that's building just over the pacific. and that interaction is going to kick up those winds. it's already kicked up some of the winds, especially for the hillside areas. so at this point outdoor burning is not recommended, especially for hillside areas, or if you know that there is some dry brush. peak winds, for today at the early morning hour, actually earlier today we did hit 50-plus-mile-an-hour winds at mount diabolo. half moon bay winds up to 40 miles per hour. monterey 36 miles per hour. and even in stris we did see some winds of about 34 miles per hour as well and we are expecting periods of sxon off again gusty conditions. into the overnight hours and the early morning hours. don't be surprised if you hear the winds. especially if you notice in napa we're talking about 38-plus mile per-hour winds. at about 10:3

the red flag warning expired for the north bay hills and valley. there is still a slight east wind for many and there are fir tackled. mendocino county. lake county and sonoma and napa. at least we do not have the red flag warning and we do not have a wind advisory. let's go northeast of fountain grove at almost 600 feet. santa rosa. the temperature rocketed up to 91 degrees at 4:30 am. that was yesterday. not now. right now there is a 3 mile per hour wind. it topped out at 5:30 am at 68 miles per hour yesterday. we saw something on the valley fire in lake county and 2015 when a 60 mile per hour wind went up. the same kind of wind induced firestorm. yesterday's be gust, 75 miles per hour. santa rosa picked out at 78. right now, many of these areas are showing an easterly or northeasterly component. the humidity is wake up. while the humidity is up and temperatures are down, there are a lot of 30s. i think we have lost the napa sites. temperatures are down 15-20 degrees for some. there is hardly any breeze at all. fairfield, north at 6. there is fog
