there were two plants in huntsville, redstone and huntsville. i was interested in redstone. redstone was an extraordinary place for women. it's very not very well known here is the id badge of a woman working in redstone. showing this the they had to be trained in. very very intense ordinance manufacturer 45.2 million units of ammo were produced in these two arsenals and women were the bulk. as you could see by 1942 in 1942. there were two women in 1944 54% of the work staff were women. this is this was very dangerous work burster charges medium and major caliber chemical artillery ammunition rifle grenades demolition blocks and bombs of varying weights and sizes, and this is very much you could see here what they're engaged in manufacturing at huntsville by 1944 peaked at 37% women notice that 11% of those women were african-american, which was a real record because african-american was tremendous prejudice in alabama against hiring african-american women. i read many of the newspaper stories that came out. time that said they're not they're not good. we can't hire them. th

the bases that, a wonderful, redstone throughout the black and white photograph, that lamppost, you can see there is made out of that red stone. that began as one of the themes. here's another 1 -- this is the wall of the oval shape on the capital side. he has made a bench out of it. again, he is telling you to keep out of the grass but not making it intrusive. he knew the bench might be hot. he has put holes through the stone in the back to keep air circulating around the back as you were sitting there. when he did was to figure out the point at which you would not be looking at the capitol along this oval. he stops at that point. that would be off to the right. but, there is a wonderful bench where when i am doing tours, i could have 20 or 30 people sitting in a row on this bench talk to them about the capitol building. and the building is right behind me. on the left is the view that you see from that location as you are sitting here. the idea was here you would be looking right at the building. you can see the red white and blue pattern he put in the pavement here. this in the lamp
