the nine lives foundation in redwood city takes in homeless and feral cats. marianne favro is there in redwood city with the latest in their struggles. marianne? >> reporter: raj, time is running out. nine lives foundation needs to be out in june, which is why volunteers are scrambling to find homes for 250 cats including some with medical problems that aren't always easy to find homes for. remember smurf, the kitten dyed purple and found abandoned with 20 bite marks on him? he was brought here to nine lives foundation in redwood city where workers gave him medical care, a lot of tlc and he was later adopted. this is smurf now with his blind pal wanda, another shelter rescue adopted with him. last year the no-kill shelter helped find homes for 1700 cats, but now nine lives is on its last life here at this location. >> we've lost our lease. there's been a change in the ownership and he couldn't -- the new people didn't want to renew the lease. so we have to find a new location. >> reporter: and they need to be out by june. operators say with a 1% vacancy rate
