currently sitting in jail in redwood city. our investigative reporter broke the story. he's been on this case learning more about the suspect. he joins us live. what did you learn so far? >> reporter: well, we've learned that apparently this man has been nursing grudges against his co-workers for years. he believes he's been demeaned, bullied, disrespected by a number of people whom he then targeted. it looks like he searched for victims and basically, hunted them down. if he believes that they were responsible for tormenting him, although we understand that one of the victims he didn't realize was there. and he shot them by mistake. that is the survivor in this particular case. the one of the eight shot that did survive. >> so jackson, eight victims total. seven, it appears, were targeted. what are you learning that led to the shooting? the sheriff saying he was mr. zhao was not on their radar. they had no idea something like this would happen. >> right. it appeared that something happened about 30 minutes before the attack. he was in discussions with a co-worker. esse

janelle is live at the sheriff's office in redwood city. cameras weren't allowed in but he admitted to you he carried out these shootings. >> he agreed to talk to me and sits in this jail right behind me in redwood city facing a slough of charges. seven murder charges, one attempted murder charge all with firearms enhancements. the district attorney said he plans to seek life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. the decision has not been made yet. he says they are in the very early stages of this investigation with still a lot to uncover and dig into and a lot of people to be interviewed. mr. zhou spoke exclusively to me today. our one-on-one visit was scheduled for 10:00 this morning. the only thing i was allowed to bring in to the jail was my driver's license to check my identity. no pen, no paper, no cell phone, no recording devices. my conversation with chun li zhou was in mandarin. he does not speak english. i told him who i am, who i worked for, and he agreed to sit down and speak with me. our conversation

redwood city over 11. south bay ranging 3 to 11 inches. this has been two to three times our monthly january rain and just in case you missed our earlier update, i had to get this in here again, massive improvements in the drought because of those storms over the past couple of weeks. look, we know there is so much severe damage out there, the storms have turned deadly but we did want to report on also the improvements of that rainfall, and you can see december 26, before the storm started, 35.49% of california was in that red color and that deepest red color and look at it today that has been wiped out. now we're still under a drought. there's the threat we could go back into it but we have made some huge gains on that and more rain coming. tomorrow will be our ninth storm in a series of storms. saturday would be the tenth. ordinarily while these storms are going to bring heavier rainfall, they wouldn't bring the impacts like landslide potential, flood concern, but because the ground is so saturated we have to stay on alert the next coupl

today in the bay's bob redell is in redwood city. what is going on in redwood city? reporter: fortunately we don't have any reports of major destruction or damage here in redwood city, but we came across this. this is minor flooding in front of a couple homes off of the westbound 84 off-ramp on to redwood road that takes you to the el camino. the homeowner on the left were prepared for this, and they had a row of sandbags to keep the water at bay, and to the right there are no sandbags and looks like no wat got into the house. this looks like an area that regularly floods when it ins, hence the preparation from that one homeowner. as you mentioned, there was a large eucalyptus that fell on a apartment building on lynn street in oakland. that building has been red tagged since, which means nobody is allowed back inside. d then 580 in downtown oakland, a user tweeted this out and gave a shout-out to the city of oakland, and workers were trying to clear that train so the water could go away. this is on old cory road at camelback, and not far from there in nearby concord

this happened in the city of occidental. a redwood tree fell on a house around 6 o'clock last night. a mom dad and their baby were inside. the father came running outside with his child in his arms. the fire chief tried to help, but it was too late. >> i first arrived on scene farther a household a child. he was kind of covered in debris. he said my child not location. so my first thought get him into my and let's get about the main because he's on a driveway to father into the truck. >> as i was backing up down the driveway reversed. i was giving him instructions his and as we did, we got back the main rescue squad and they may be able to grab the child from the father and started cpr. >> and that baby who died was just one or 2 years old. the mother and father were not physically injured. >> in the east bay, a father and his 2 girls had to be rescued from a car that was stranded in some deep water. this was on highway 4 rodeo right there at the clays lane off-ramp. there's the water. you can see the car there in the middle of it all
