tonight, mayor reed in the spotlight like never before. george kiriyama joins us from downtown san jose. we saw something different tonight, didn't we? >> reporter: oh, yes. and mayor chuck reed tried to talk about the city's retirement benefits, there was union members listening to every word. we heard mayor reed use the $650 million figure often, referring to retirement cost projections. but not one time did he use that figure in tonight's speech. so, i asked him after the speech, i asked mayor chuck reed, if he's backing away from the $650 million figure. and i also asked h ioff the pension reform initiative should be taken off the june ballot. and this is what he had to say. >> $650 million is still a reasonable ballpark estimate of the pessimistic scenarios. when you're doing projections, you try to have a base case, a pessimistic case and an optimistic case. and the folks opposed to it being on the ballot, don't want the people of san jose to decide. it's a political stunt. it's political theater. we're going to have a ballot measure

san jose's chuck reed will deliver his state of the city address tonight. the budget is still the biggest issue. but with the san jose metro area leading the country in job growth, and more taxpayers pouring into town, mayor reed says there's nowhere to go but up. >> i'm optimistic about the coming year. i think it can be a year of recovery because if the voters approve the pension reform ballot measure in june, we can begin talking about restoring services. after 10 years of cutting services, we're finally at a point where we have the possibility of restoring those services. >> mayor reed says he also has a good feeling about the future of the as' downtown ballpark proposal. >>> a berkeley officer is recovering from a crash that led to an officer-involved shooting in castro valley. he was pinned between two cars during an arrest yesterday. the officer's partner shot and wounded the suspect the injured officer and suspect are expected to survive. no word on why the berkeley officer tried to arrest the man though in castro valley. >>> that eye doctor accused
