south korea's most powerful typhoon in years left the country's southern regions reeling today.rm struck with winds of 100 miles an hour and 3 feet of rain, killing at least six people. streets were flooded and buildings were badly damaged. rescue crews drove through the waters, pulling people to safety, and thousands lost power. back in this country, authorities in california warned of potential blackouts as a heat wave seared the state. an emergency alert was issued tonight, urging consumers to cut back on energy use as demand reached record levels. highs were headed for 115 degrees in some places. and in colorado, extreme heat is also forcing the closure of four non-air-conditioned public schools in denver this week. an additional 28 schools will release students earlier in the day. the white house says covid-19 vaccines will remain free to the public. covid coordinator dr. ashish jha made the pledge today despite earlier warnings that federal funding for vaccinations would run out by january. jha also touted new boosters designed to work against the omicron variant. dr. jha:

florida reeling in the wake of the category 4 hit right now, south carolina is bracing for ian set torm for us. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: cecilia, search and rescue happening as we speak for day two after that storm made landfall in southwest florida and now ian looking to make a fourth landfall later today. this morning, a constant stream of overwhelming images, a glaring reflection of hurricane ian's power. the behemoth making landfall wednesday afternoon as a category 4. ferocious winds topping 150 miles per hour, gouging parts of southwest florida. ian making history as one of the top ten strongest on record in the united states. the monster storm claiming several lives. so far at least 11 people killed. that number expected to rise. >> this could be the deadliest hurricane in florida's history. >> reporter: one of the most hard hit regions, fort myers beach. we navigated through the dawn of destruction ian left behind. in this neighborhood alone, there are hundreds of homes, you can see from our drone there, that each of these took on at least 12 feet of water. they are

reels the carolinas are facing the still moving hurricane. ian regained strength after crossing over florida yesterday and just a few hours ago made landfall in georgetown southough ian is not bringing with it the same intensity it is still a hurricane. shaq, i've been watching your live shots all day. tell me mutt you're seeing this hour, and tell me what you've seen as the day has progressed? >> hey there, nicolle. right now it's just a slight misty rain, a slight breeze in charlatan. the mayor telling us today they dodged a bullet and by not getting the impacts you saw in other places. but that's not to say they were spared completely. this is a road locals tell me it does flood from time to time but nothing like what you're seeing here. even though it's somewhat receded in the past hour or so we've been here, so that's what you're hearing from officials that the water is receding in areas where there's flooding. there is still that impact that residents are going to have to deal with. there's a road that's going to be closed for the foreseeable future in the words of the police department here, but you get the sense from people in charleston at least they
