i'm reena ninan. president trump is under fire tonight after an attack on another prominent african american member of congress. this time, the president lashed out on house democrat elijah cummings. it's the latest in a series of attacks on congressional leaders. paula reid begins our coverage tonight from washington. >> reporter: before heading out for a round of golf this morning, president trump launched a twitter attack against maryland congressman elijah cummings claiming his district is "a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess." cummings' district includes much of the city of baltimore and reaches into the baltimore and howard counties. shpetime ihis district to help clean up a very dangerous and filthy place. the attack appeared to be related on a july 18 hearing on board detention facilities where cummings sparred with kevin mcaleenan. >> we're doing our level best in a very challenging situation. >> what does that mean? what does that mean when a child is sitting in their own feces, can't

i'm reena ninan. with a western edition.thern california is assessing the damage tonight after a second massive earthquake rocked that region. last night's 7.1 magnitude quake rattled buildings and sparked fires. seismologists say that's ten times larger than the july 4 quake, but it did not cause any major injuries. the quake struck near ridgecrest in the mojave desert, about 150 miles north of los angeles. carter evans is there. >> reporter: it was sheer panic for ridgecrest residents already on edge. customers stormed out of this restaurant when the 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck. audience members at a local show quickly abandoned their seats. >> earthquake! >> reporter: and employees at a home depot ran for their lives. >> let's go, let's go, let's go! >> oh, my god! oh, my god! oh, my god! >> reporter: it was just as terrifying for those who rode out the quake at home. >> i can describe it as the most scared i've ever been. >> reporter: bob bloudek was with his eight-year-old granddaughter. he says once the shaking sto

and that's what he feels threatened by. >> reena, you're a republican and you advise republicans. last i checked the republican party was fully on side with the first amendment and the idea that criticizing your country is -- i often call the first amendment an obligation, not a right, because i think that if you don't practice it, you don't have it. and part of practicing it is being critical of your country, of your government, of the way things are going. >> right. >> the president tried to brand that today as something that was unpatriotic. it almost sounded like he was suggesting people are traitors wore criticizing their country. that's not a republican principle. it's not a principle upon which this country was founded. >> correct. this shouldn't be a partisan moment. we should be able to denounce the rhetoric that this president uses on a regular basis. it's that of a preschooler. i have a preschooler who i constantly have to tell please do the opposite. do not name-call. do not judge people by the color of their skin. these are virtues that we cared about in this country,

let me ask you, reena, the same question that we saw in the paper there in north carolina. are republicans all right with a racist president? >> you know, i still believe in the good of republicans in this country and i know that's so hard for so many viewers to hear, but there are so many good americans out there who lack the moral courage to speak out and thinking a lot about race in our democracy. i often appear on this network and love to wear a black blazer but not only because the heat is really tough here in dc, but i wanted to wear something sleeveless because look at the color of my skin. i get it. i know that i'm a woman who is brown and i am an american by birth. i'm as american as apple pie, and i want people to see my color and realize that i am having a moment here where i am, of course, incredibly saddened, irritated, angered. i've gone through the range of emotions this week. it was harder than ever for me this week because that squad of democratic congresswomen, they are around my age. these are women i should see myself and identify with and i did identify

. >> reena shaw, republican strategist.s for being here. >> the president attacking this poll one day after taughting another fox news poll. do you get the sense he's scared or should he be? >> he's not scared at all. he just wants people to obey him. he knows that fox news always tends to give him favorables and he's annoyed. he's not much deeper than that, kendis. i think it's super early in terms of what the president is feeling in terms of strategy. he's someone that doesn't operate that way. this is really a nothing burger. >> it's not just fox, according to quinnipiac university poll, higher voters favored by trump. while other major democratic candidates remain tied with the president. what does this say to you don. you're the democratic strategist here. does it seem like they're getting a foothold in the blue collar voters trump considers his base? >> you have to remember that joe biden. joe biden is the one who probably has the best chance to beat trump. internally, we're going to have to have a reckoning of why th
