courtney regan is here. >> if you're investing in retail you got to do your homework. retailer and largest home improvement retailer turning in different. walmart misses bay penny. 7% below last year. that's lower than last year and a billion half shy of analyst as estimates. sales u.s. stores opened at least a year improved 1.1%. third straight quarter of improvement for walmart. traffic did also improve. walmart struggling internally the grocery and store experience as well as exalternatival fact jobs the strong dollar. consumers saving and paying down debt. home depot benefiting from that recovering housing market. profit revenue same store sales all beating estimates. u.s. same store sales up very strong, 7.1%. retailer upping its sales guidance. interestingly tjx home good stores also saw those comps improve 9%. bargain hunting consumers driving strong results across the personality disorder with tjx beating consensus as it ups its earnings and sales forecast. after the bell we'll hear from online marketplace etsy. we only have a handful of estimates to go on but

betty: i want to bring in mike regan. i forgot to mention you were joining us as well.k? mike: so many people have loaded into high-yield debt and the really -- if there's any set of weakness in that space, think his quote was "a run for the exits." and i know intrepid has a pretty good state in high-yield capital. i'm curious what you think of that. willie potential rate increase caused -- will a potential rate increase cause a run for the exits? mark: we are not quite to away were in june of 2007 where things went up in the night with a bear stearns mortgage-backed runs that set all the fun off -- mortgage-backed fund that set all the fun off. but i am kind of a believer that we have boxed ourselves in, or the fed has, in that they have allowed the congressional leaders to get by because of cheap rates. and now we have borrowed so much money we cannot afford to pay it back and not only that, we cannot afford the higher rate on it. i think it will be a long time coming but as i mentioned with the bear stearns mortgage-backed fund in july of 2007, things can happen that

[laughter] alix: it's really a crazy. michael: the stock market is taking this as a positive, there has been a lot of talk among some people that they believe there is some kind of pent-up wage inflation that could show up in these numbers, and obviously that has indications of profit margins and the fed, of course and that number being pretty cool today, is one of the reasons that the market is taking it pretty well. alix: we have the average hourly earnings that are pretty much flat or slightly lower, but then we have the employment cost index slightly increasing at the end of yo

mike regan noticed this bold call.end to get a lot of strategists coming out and being this specific on this day. mike: that's what stuck out to me. if you're a strategist, you are always on the hook to make a forecast for the end of the year or for 12 months. that is hard enough to do. to make a one-day call saying the market will rally, it's very unusual. the most remarkable thing is how very right he was. julie: let's look at the first chart, recent history. he looked at the two weeks leading up to the jobs report and look at the performance in stocks and that two-week period. you have a distribution of performance. it you look at four weeks after the report the more negative things were ahead of time, the more positive they were afterwards. mike: the weaker the market is coming into the jobs report, the better it does after it. it was down almost 2% from the last record through the open yesterday. that was one thing he looked at. the other chart is something that a lot of people might have guessed is true but he ac
