and san jose fire captain reggie williams tells us what happens next. >> mom was awakened by smoke detectors this morning. she heard the smoke detectors and smelled the smoke and she was able to wake up the other children and adult. shuffled them down through the stairs and out the front door. >> reporter: so everyone got out safely and the reason is those working smoke detectors. you hear the message all the time. but far too often, people forget to change their batteries or make sure they're working. in this case they woke everybody up and the two parents were able to get all the kids out. the youngest child only 6 weeks old. so -- i'm sure it was a hurried experience for everyone to get out the door as fast as possible. unfortunately the fire did destroy that upstairs unit. and also caused some damage to the surrounding townhomes, the fire was just so hot and the townhomes are so close together. that the radiant heat from the fire actually caused these surrounding townhomes to start smoking. so there's some damage there. again the family of nine escapes without injury from their townhouse
