amanda reggie aqui. >> all right, gloria, thank you. and this morning, we are keeping a close eye on southern california, where dangerous fire conditions have returned. >> crews worked all night on a new fire that started in ventura county, near oxnard around 7:00 last night. this is the auto fire. this area is in the pds red flag warning that we've been talking about as of this morning. forward progress of that fire has stopped. crews were able to keep the fire from spreading out of a local river bottom. our sister station in la had their helicopter over this fire last night. and here's their reporter describing it quickly became a five acre brush fire and has since doubled to more than 10 to 15 acres in the middle of the santa clara river, between the buenaventura golf course and the river ridge golf club. >> it quickly was driven by heavy fuel and heavy winds through here upwards of 30mph, at one point speeding westward towards victoria avenue. fire crews, after numerous water drops, were able to stop the forward progress of this fir

reggie aqui. thanks, gloria. >> another special delivery has arrived in the bay area.tails this morning on the animals available for adoption. after being moved north from southern california. but first to check on the weather with drew. >> oh, they are so sweet. okay. and the accuweather forecast. we're looking at live doppler seven along with satellite. first, this ridge of high pressure across northern california has been very persistent this month. that is why we've been underneath this dry pattern. and we continue that dry pattern for the foreseeable future. this area of low pressure responsible for the gusty winds across southern california today. this will slowly push off to the east over the next 36 hours, easing those winds. but still, a red flag warning is currently in effect for good reason. we're seeing those winds gusting 30 to 45mph rt now in some of our highest peaks across southern california. it's not only the red flag warning, but we are in the middle of winter. so we also have freeze warnings across southern california. so as these firefighters are f

reggie aqui. amanda. all right, gloria. >> thank you. we'll start in the east bay. oakland's fire chief says the community is seeing the impact of the closure of two fire stations, claiming there is proof response times are being impacted. it comes as city leaders and fire officials prepare to meet with the community today. abc seven news reporter lena howland is here in studio with what people can expect. lena. >> amanda, good morning to you. today, oakland city council member janani ramachandran is coming together with the oakland fire chief to talk about some of the impacts stemming from the closures of fire stations 25 and 28. and they want to hear from you. these fire stations closed last monday. the fire chief says this is a brownout process meant to save the city $5 million, while the city works to balance its $129 million budget deficit. these closures were meant to keep oakland afloat, as the city waits for long delayed money from the sale of the coliseum to go through. but chief damon covington says the closures are already causing slower response times. j

reggie aqui. amanda. >> all right. thanks so much, gloria.ight now, people in southern california are on high alert as the region is facing another round of dangerous fire conditions and a particularly dangerous situation. >> red flag warning is in effect until 3 p.m. today. we could see more intense winds before relief finally arrives. here's where things stand this morning. with the fires that have been burning for just over a week now. yesterday, officials confirmed another death, bringing the total killed to 25. containment of the palisades fire is improving now up to 18%. it hasn't grown in the past day and remains at over 23,000 acres. firefighters are also making progress on the eaton fire. it is also stayed about the same size and containment is up to 35%. but the big concern this morning are those winds through this afternoon. after that, though, conditions are expected to improve now by wednesday evening. >> wednesday night i expect the critical conditions to diminish. and then for thursday into the weekend, we're actually get back

i'm reggie aqui.emergency has been approved following the fire at the moss landing power plant. that fire started last thursday at a battery storage facility. it burned well into friday. it led to people being ordered to either stay inside or in some cases, even evacuate. officials say fire crews are still on site to monitor the area to ensure safety of inspection crews and conduct drone surveillance as needed. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. and now here's traffic with gloria. >> good morning to you, reggie. good morning to everybody. so we do have a crash that we're tracking over in san jose on southbound 101 at capitol expressway. this is a rollover crash. three vehicles were involved and all lanes were stopped, but they just reopened. however, traffic is still very heavy there from toll road. so it's going to take you a little bit to get through that area. it's taking a while, so definitely give yourself a little bit more time reggie. >> now we're going t dave's been very excite

. >> thankfully, reggie aqui shaken would be an understatement. county firefighter happened to be there for a firefighter union convention, and he was out in the french quarter celebrating new year's eve only hours before the attack. firefighter john aguilar took these photos in new orleans yesterday. he even told us that he wanted to stay out in the french quarter a little longer. early wednesday morning. but instead, they opted to go back to the hotel right around 1:15 a.m, which could have been a life saving decision. he told us he cut straight through within about a block and a half of where the attack happened. while he did hear a tremendous amount of sirens once he got back to the hotel, he thought it was a fire. it wasn't until he woke up when he heard about what happened. >> you know, it's i think the saddest part is watching the actual community here right now. this place was so joyful, so excited last night to bring in the new year. just everybody having fun. i mean, this town was due to be, you know, completely packed this entire week.
