as you say, senator reid is quite vulnerable.his poll numbers have been weak all year and republicans have been itching to take him on and try to defeat him. what has happened in the last few weeks is that the candidate that many in the republican establishment had sumed would be the nominee, sue lowden has stumbled. she's had some things to say on the came pran-- campaign trail that caused her trob. in particular that one could go back toy a system of barter, for health care and as she put it trading chickens for health care. that has allowed sharron angle, who is the favored candidate of the tea party movement, to surge into the lead. now this is still a close race and there's a third candidate, danny tarkanian who is the son of the former basketball coach at unlv. but at this point sharron angle appears to have an edge. many democrats are delighted at this because they think in the long run, she would be a weaker candidate against senator reid than would sue lowden or perhaps even danny tarkanian. >> woodruff: we will see if s

so harry reid has a whole mix of things innfront of him to mix together. and we are seeing, and the news from yesterday, a way that he is trying to put that together. but, and that is to hitch climate and oil spill. but the possibilities, the different revenue cards that he has to put together as he tries to cobble together 60 votes. he's got oil spill liability, the $75 million cap on economic damages. and ems reform, revenue sharing, some sort of renewable energy to be used by a certain date. and the biggie is price on carbon and some price regulat n regulation. there are big ones and the oil spill bill. and there is a scaled down energy bill, sometimes called the scala. and a lot of times called energy only. so one school of thought said all there will be is oil spill legislation. they got to do that. they can't do anything else. the next school of thought, they will take this bill with the rems, the renewable energy standard and add on the oil spill bill. and that's enough to carry renewable energy standard over the line. and then you have the eternal

the senate majority leader harry reid and other democrats ask them to establish a $20 billion account. pressure mounts, while meers and a report that florida beaches remain active and open but two pensacola bay and a close to the beach to shrimping, crabbing, and fishing. we'll tell you what this means for the future of energy policy. tama bay.commpabay.com reports s well. president obama is heading to the gulf coast which will include a stop in florida. what do state officials want him to know most? guest: they are eager for more federal resources. they want more skimmers. they are pressing for a better claims process, faster claims. host: it seems that the ool slick is getting closer as the president arrives. the oil slick is as close as 3 miles off the florida coast. what steps are florida officials taking to prepare the beaches and prepare the areas for the inundation of oil? guest: they deployed a lot of booms we hear about. they have skimmers in place. they have marshalled many resources. they have a lot of people in the pensacola area to begin9kw3sp e cleanup process. host: as

happening in nevada, where you have three repuicans fightingo challenge the senate majority leader harry reidlot of people are eager to see what kind of a candidate will be put up against him. and some other interesting races. in south carolina, the governor's race, the republican primary recently heated up wit a lot of allegations of sexual infidelity and that sort of thing. that race has become interesting as well. host: give us a sense of what the takeaway maybe from tuesday. it is early to tell, but if some of the more conservative candidates win, does that give a signal as to how the general election may go? guest: i think one thing people may look for, particularly in the early republican primaries, you have seen a couple of republicans -- bob bennett in utah, a three-term the senator who was very popular year ago, lee is in a primary a few weeks ago. you saw -- very popular a year ago, lose and a primary. you saw charlie crist being pushed out of the republican primary and accused of being too moderate. on the republican side, that is what i am looking -- are you going to see that tren

harry reid. congressman kennedy is leaving office. on and on. did you get any sense as you saw all these names come by you that thhs scandal had the impact of chasing people out of congress? >> i think it did have the impact of chasing people out of congress. that was probably a positive development. so i don't want to minimize or overdue the idda that jack abramoff was scapegoated in the sense that there was no other impact. i think the abramoff scandal so called really did have an impact and people left. on the other hand, what's interesting about washington is you see them coming bark and j.d. hayworth would be a good example of that. he may unseat john mccain, who was the guy that went after abramoff, in a kind of bitter irony. j.d. hayworth now touts the fact that mccain's committee didn't find anything wrong with what he was doing during this influence pedaling scandal. maybe john mccain wishes he had dug a little deeper and released a few more e-mails that might have revealed more about j.d. hayworth's role. but anyway, there's no doubt,

reid: mr. president, our senate family grieves today with the byrd family over the loss of one of the most dedicated americans ever to serve this country, one of the most devoted men ever to serve his state, one of the most distinguished members ever to serve in the united states senate. robert byrd's mind was one of the greatest the world's ever seen. as a boy, he was called upon when he was in elementary school to stand before the class and recite not paragraphs from the assignment of the night before but pages of the night before. he did this with memory. from his graduation as valedictorian of his high school class at the age of 16 to his death this morning as the senate's pro tempore at age 92, he mastered everything he touched with great thoughtfulness and skill. mr. president, this good man could drive from his home here in washington to west virginia and back -- it takes eight hours -- he could recite poetry for eight hours and never recite the same poem twice. i was asked by senator by
