host: reid wilson, where does rick santorum fit in? have a path to victory moving forward. guest: i hate to say it, but i think rick santorum days are numbered on the campaign trail fit as i mentioned earlier, he is in missouri -- he was there yesterday. their primary next week does not actually allocate any delegates. it's sort of like competing in a contest that doesn't matter. none of the other candidates are campaigning here. it's curious that he decided to move there. at this moment, the big problem for all the not-romney candidates in february is they are living hand to mouth right now. absent a big win and a big influx of money, they will essentially have to survive a month of losses without taking in the kind of money that they will need to be on the air in the super tuesday states, for example. mitt romney has got that advantage. by the way, ron paul does, too. we've already seen ron paul advertising in places like colorado and thinking ahead. santorum and gingrich have not been present in those states. they've been focusing o

reid wilson, you've been following these candidates hither and yon.l me how is mitt romney positioned now in south carolina? >> well, mitt romney comes to south carolina from new hampshire in first place and with momentum behind him. he's already won the first two contests in this cycle and the last reliable poll conducted last week by cnn and "time" magazine shows he's at about 37% which is twice what rick santorum and newt gingrich have. as well add in a little rick perry and there you have the entire story of the campaign so far. a social conservative vote that's being split among a number of candidates and the more fiscally conservative more socially moderate section of the south carolina electorate lining up behind romney. nobody's splitting his vote. the other vote is being split at least three ways. >> ifill: professor woodard, does the landscape look like that to you? >> it looks pretty much like that. i think rand paul... excuse me, ron paul is playing a larger role maybe than we thought before but the main issue social conservatives are divi

host: let's give reid wilson a chance. first talk about ron paul and where you see him going forward? guest: i do want to talk about ron paul. the reason todd is not seeing him in braidington or anywhere else in florida is paul has skipped florida. he's made a strategic decision. he doesn't think he can win the state so he moves on to other places. he campaigned in maine where the caucuses are coming up later this month. some caucuses are already happening in maine. then later this month, today, he's in colorado which is going to be -- holds its caucuses later this week as well. so ron paul is pursuing this very strategic, sort of path, to establishing a real contingent of delegates for the convention. he has -- i think he's pursuing probably the smartest strategy for his own political sake. this is the same way that president obama, then senator obama, established a big lead over hillary clinton, by understanding the rules of the game better than the other guys. if they understand the rules of the game better than the oth

reid wilson, let me start with you. i made the contention, good week for midromney as far as the primary is concerned, but that doesn't mean that he hasn't southeastern some general election problems introduced big-time this week. >> it was a great week for romney. he showed up after winning in new hampshire, he showed up in columbia. i was at that first rally. he had easily five times as many people as any other candidate as i saw over those first sort of three days where everybody descended on south carolina. but in the general election, it seemed like newt gingrich and rick perry and rick santorum were using the talking points. perry is going around talking about two south carolina businesses that bain closed and lost some jobs on. we're going to hear it in battleground states in october. >> and jessica, this is not the issue we thought we would be hearing in the run to the south carolina primaries, south carolina is usually about social issues and we'll be hearing more about that. given what the romney super pac is
