reiner a professor at washington.he cdc acknowledges it was mixing results of viral and antibodies tests on its website. they're separating out the numbers, does it make sense to be lugging together diagnostics and antibodies tests in these numbers. >> i did a double take when i saw those numbers coming out. the viral pcr test tells us what's happening of a snapshot of what are the cases of people who actively have the disease. the antibody test tells us what's going on in the past months and how many already have the disease and is already behind them. both of those pieces of information are important. when we are talking about viral testing, we are talking about on a week to week basis knowing how many new cases are emerging. that's the information that's driving our decisions to reopen. we'll continue to reinform the reopening decisions. it is what we have been counting on is the denominator. when we talk about how much testing capacity we have. we have and kind of assuming this means this viral pcr and testing peo

reiner, if dr. redfield, dr. hahn, dr.auci are going into some form of self-quarantine for 14 days, shouldn't other officials at the white house who were in contact with katie miller, the press secretary to the vice president, shouldn't they also go into some form of self-quarantine, out of an abundance of caution, as they say? >> absolutely. look, the goal in the white house should be two-fold. it should be, number one, to prevent any further infection inside the white house, but specifically, they need to be laser focused on protecting the president and vice president. they are very vulnerable to being infected. their strategy now, which is to test them every day, will just define when they have been infected. but by not quarantining the president and vice president and the rest of the staffers, what they threaten to do is to have a virus that propagates around the white house from staff member to staff member to staff member, and potentially threatening the president himself. if i were the president's physician -- and i

jonathan reiner, the director of the cardiac catheterization program at george washington hospital --niversity hospital joins us as well. good evening to both of you. kaitlan, so the president is claiming that the country has, his words, prevailed on testing. how did he address the fact that his staff can get regular testing but ordinary americans can't? >> well, don, multiple times he was asked that question, and he seemed to try to turn it around on reporters, saying that that i be criticized if he wasn't testing his stoof, but that really wasn't the point of the question. no one is saying that the white house staffers, cabinet members, the president and the vice president shouldn't be tested. the point that was being made was that look at what is happening on such a small scale here, where two people tested positive for coronavirus. everyone else is fretting about the possible exposure that could be happening in the west wing, and these people have rapid testing where they can come into work and get tested within 15 minutes. of course the rest of the country does not have that. we'

reiner pointed out, remember, he was dick chaieney' doctor. at the white house they have all kinds of equipment there. they monitor the president very closely and i'm sure they monitor him even more closely every day. so if he develops an arrhythmia or something, they can take care of it in the way they could not with any of us if we were to take it. and again, of course, we have no idea -- we believe it's not preventive, but the president has all of that surrounding him. >> dr. topol, just briefly, if a patient says to you, i hear this is great, i've got a lot of friends calling me about it, i want it, is it the doctor's -- what do you do as a doctor? >> the responsible doctor would say, no, there's no data to support this. there's a risk that we know of and it's significant. and so we can't prescribe that. so in a way it's complicit. it's really unfortunate because it is -- somehow it promotes the drug in a reckless way. and moreover, it's this whole commitment to the game changer and all the other things that were being done for many weeks.
