jonathan reiner. good evening, doc.president biden announcing today that the country will meet his goal of 100 million vaccine shots well ahead of his first 100 days. so what is the next goal? >> well, i think we need to get to 3 million shots a day, and i think we should try and get the vast majority of adults in this country vaccinated by the beginning of the summer. we have the ability to do that. we have the vaccine supplies. we have enough vaccine on order from the three approved vaccines to vaccinate 400 million americans. there are only 330 million americans, so we're going to have enough vaccine. the vaccine is excellent. now all we have to do is get it into arms. and we have the infrastructure to do this. so right now we're averaging about 2.5 million shots per day. let's boost that a little bit, 3 million shots per day, and we'll get to herd immunity sometime this summer. >> okay. you talked about you're currently in a race between vaccines and variants, right? 17 states are reporting a rise in cases. are you

jonathan reiner. good evening, good to see you. the states where restrictions are being lifted are in a bad spot. texas is adding about 7,000 new cases a day. th what's the impact of this decision going to be? >> potentially more cases, and it's coming at a really bad time because things are going well in the united states. compared to last week, cases are down 5%. hospitalization is down 15%, deaths are down 10% some things are really moving in the right way. so why would you do this? i get the economic imperative to try to get businesses open. i understand that. but what's the imperative to drop masking? we're doing really well now, in large part to the fact that -- due to the fact that i think never before have more americans been wearing masks. so why would you drop it? let's look at some of the states that are dropping universal masking. texas. as you said, they have about 10% of all of the cases in the united states came out of texas. they have a test positivity rate of 10%. >> let's put up this map while you're talking about

jonathan reiner, we see the u.k. variant of now 20% to 24% cases according to dr. fauci.well. the biden administration is worried as they should be. when you do the math as you have been doing over the past few days. if the people right now say they're not going to get vaccinated, you won't get to herd immunity, how serious of a worry is this? >> it is a big worry. we used to worry of creating a vaccine and we do that within a year and worry about producing enough vaccines. no one would imagine we would get americans to take the vaccines that's where we are in some parts of the country. more than 40% of conservatives will not get this vaccine, it is a huge number. so remember 74 million people voted for the formal president so if you just use the number of people who voted, those people are potentially not getting the vaccine about 30 million. that's the population of 18 states. so, you are right, we'll not get to herd immunity without those folks and we'll have big surges come the fall in large parts of the south and parts of the plains in this country. so we have to get

reiner, good to see you again. if we could just start with the fact that donald trump and melania trump both received vaccines back in january and the country is only hearing about it right now. you couple that with recent polling showing republicans more than democrats are resisting the vaccine, there was a poll out just last week from the kaiser family foundation that found 75% of democrats have already received the vaccine or will compared to 41% of republicans and those who say they definitely will not get it, only 2% were democrats. 28% were republicans. what is your reaction? >> right. in a similar fashion to the politicization of masks we've seen the same thing now to a little bit of a lesser degree but nonetheless there with the vaccines. another poll by the gallup organization last week asked people if a vaccine was available for them right now would they take it? and 91% of democrats said yes. 51% of republicans said yes. so we must close that gap. what an opportunity for the most respected republican, th

jonathan reiner. good to see you for our nightly house call. thank you, doctor. so the cdc is warning that we are just weeks away from the u.k. variant becoming the dominant strain here in the u.s. there is a 64% higher chance of dying from this variant but less than 22% of americans have had at least one vaccine. are we losing critical time in this race right now? >> no. i don't think we're using it. i think we're leading the world in vaccinations. we're finally doing really well. week after week, more vaccines are getting into arms. but i do think we're racing the variants. and if we ever needed incentives to double down on things that work, masks, social distancing, staying out of crowds, we should do that now. if we need incentive to get vaccines into articles, here it is. all three of the vaccines approved in the united states are very effective against the u.k. b.1.1.7 variant. if you get vaccinated, you'll be protected from the coronavirus. so let's get, all get vaccinated. about 27% of adults have had at least one shot. about 75% of people over the age of

reiner at george washington university hospital. thank you for joining us for our nightly house call. good evening. the cdc is saying that schools can keep student three feet apart instead of six feet as long as everyone is masked, safety measures are enforced, also ventilation and other measures as well. is this a safe move, especially with the new more contagious variants on the rise? >> i think it is a realistic move. it comes out of studies from three states, just published today by the cdc, which shows really a very low risk of spread within the school. much lower than in the community as a whole. and i think what we're coming to understand is there's really no risk-free option going forward. the risk is low in the schools. it can be made lower if some pretty common sense things are done. if windows can be kept open. if you can put a box fan to move the air around the room. and you lower, if you can add a hepa filter in the room. so these are common sense things that can be done. kids continue to wear masks, teachers wear masks

jonathan reiner. hopefully this is good news, doctor, thanks for joining us.hese j&j shots as early as tomorrow. 20 million shots promised. they don't need to be kept in freezers, and just one shot. do you think this will keep infections down? >> i do. this is a big deal. it's a very effective vaccine. just as effective in presenting death and hospitalization as the two mrna vaccines. but it's much more efficient, since it's one and done. you just need one shot. so we'll see tomorrow, somewhere between 3 to 4 million doses delivered to the states. that's like getting 6 to 8 million more droses. this will increase our vaccine supply by about 30%. we're giving about 1.8 million vaccines per day. we're going to have enough vaccine to get the job done. now we have to focus on the last mile, on getting the shots into arms. this is really good news. and it comes at a time where numbers are still dropping. i know dr. walensky sounded an important note of caution about not letting our guard down today, there was a wobble in the data where last week the number of cases

reiner, the need to aggressively get out there and reach people who don't have access to internet oron. people on native american reservations, people in inner cities, rural areas. biden announced they're going to spend almost $10 billion to expand access to the vaccines in the hardest-hit areas and increase vaccine confidence. is there any evidence that the efforts the biden administration has already made into this, is there any evidence anything is working? >> yeah, i think so. if you look specifically at the federal distribution centers for vaccines, 60% of those have gone to black and brown americans. retail pharmacy, 45% of outreach is now going into zip codes that have been considered hard to access in the past. they want to do a partnership with dialysis clinics, 550,000 p people who are receiving dialysis. that's a good way to reach vulnerable populations. goals? we can't do this wellness journey alone right. find that right coach, the one that speaks to you and you'll hear that thing that you needed to hear. we've all got your back. team lisa, this week alone, has lost 4,00

jonathan reiner, thank you. so. the u.s.ress when it comes to vaccinations but with states opening back up and the variants spreading, are we vaccinating fast enough to avoid another surge? >> boy, we're vaccinating really fast now. we're averaging about 2.5 million shots per day. 113 million americans have gotten at least one shot. i think we can go even faster. i think we can get to 3 million. and we're racing the clock. i think we'll see a big drop in new cases once we start vaccinating young people. they are powering the transmission of the virus. >> the cdc says two variants may be about 20% more transmissible. how worried are you about these california variants? >> no more worried than any of the others. we know they're more transmissible. so it is even more reason to not stop wearing masks and get shots into arms as fast as possible. the good news is 65% of the people in this country over the age of 65 have had at least one shot. so we're really going to great lengths to vaccinate our most vulnerable. but the more peo

jonathan reiner, you know, we know the science on this. masks work as even the governor of mississippi makes clear as he said he will not have a mandate anymore. a year later it is a political issue, the fact you have parents running to send their kids to burn masks is pretty heartbreaking frankly in terms of the decisions of what they are teaching the kids and how they are choosing to raise them. how disappointing are the i images? >> well, i think it is an infuriating slap in the face to the families and the friends of the 525,000 americans who have died in the pandemic. and also to the millions of health care workers who tried to put the fire out. the thousands who have also died in the effort. it is a really sad legacy of the former administration's policy of politicizing masks and turning it into a form of a weapon in the culture wars. when i see children at the burn barrels, i think that it really veers very close to child abuse. it is really a short step a wade from, you know, watching children burning books that might be offensive

jonathan reiner. your reaction to senator paul?of two people in that conversation is wrong, and i have news for senator paul, it's not dr. fauci. let's just state the facts. neither vaccination or prior infection are perfect guards against reinfection and by extension, transmission of the virus. so we know that -- say i get the pfizer vaccine, for example. it's phenomenally effective, but its efficacy is not 100% in terms of preventing disease. so you can get both doses of that vaccine and a small number of people will still get the virus. let's talk about prior infection. a large study just published this week out of denmark, looking at their second surge, was able to calculate how protective prior infection is for subsequent infection. what they found, having a prior infection with the coronavirus is about 80% protective. and once you get over 65, it's even less protective. so it's dropping down to about 47%. so neither vaccine nor prior infection is a perfect guard against becoming reinfected or having a new infection. >> which

jonathan reiner, often the highlight of my evening when he brings good news.ully this will be it. americans could be getting this johnson & johnson shots as early as tomorrow. 20 million doses promised by the end of the month. the vaccine doesn't need to be kept in special freezers. just one dose as we said. do you think this vaccine in particular will really drive numbers down? >> i do. >> oh, good. so you're the highlight of my evening. thank you very much. i appreciate it. >> have a good night. you know, so this is a big deal. it's a very effective vaccine, just as effective in preventing death and hospitalization as the two mrna vaccines. but it's much more efficient vaccine to use since it's one and done. you just need one shot. >> mm-hmm. >> so we'll see tomorrow essentially, somewhat between 3 million to 4 million doses delivered to the states. that's like getting 6 million to 8 million more doses. this is going to increase our vaccine supply this week by about 30 p%. we're giving about 1.8 million vaccines per day. this is going to significantly boost

reiner. so 200 million shots. if the goal is hit, you're close to herd immunity. who wants one getting one who is allowed with the science. >> well, not quite. don't forget that most of the vaccine to date are two-shot vaccines. so 200 million shots is subtracting out the j&j vaccines about 100 million people. so we still have a good way to go. right now, we're getting vaccine at about 2.5 million shots per day. roughly split, half and half with whatever j&j shots are going in now. so in order for us to get to herd immunity, even at this rate, it's going to take about five months. assuming we can convince, you know, fully 70% of the population to take the shot. you know, the administration is doing a great job at accelerating this, but they have a history of basically announcing a goal they have already achieved. just by math, with 34 more days left in the first 100 days at 2 1/2 million shots per day, he'll get to the goal. that's pretty much baked in. >> i get why they would want to set a goal that they can meet. your point is important. it's not ramping anythin

jonathan reiner who advised the white house medical team under president george w. bush.ll been hearing case counts are going down and now that is no longer the case. they have plateaued. some have been deeply concerned the variants could cause another surge. the plunge has stopped. we are plateauing. that is at the same time that the governors in texas and mississippi are lifting mask mandates and allowing businesses to operate at full capacity. is this a mistake or not? >> this is a gigantic mistake. in texas, for instance, they have a test positivity rate of 13.5%. compare that to the overall rate in the united states of 4.4%. they had 54,000 cases last week. that's 12% of all the cases in the united states. they also had more than 10% of the deaths in the united states. the state by the way has 8% of the population in this country. so they are not doing well. so, you know, this is obviously a political ploy on the part of the governor who is just coming out of a horrible winter storm under intense criticism for the state's performance in a state where basically millio

jonathan reiner joins us now. good to see you, 2.5 million doses a day, a vast improvement where we were a few months ago. but obviously more needs to be done. do you think president biden can hit this new target, 200 million shots in arms within his first 100 days? >> he certainly will. this administration has shown a practice of underpromising and overdelivering. when they announced their initial goal of basically a million shots per day, 100 million vaccinations in 100 days, we were already giving 900,000 shots per day. so that wasn't a big aspirational goal. now we're giving 2.5 million shots per day, some days 3 million shots per day. we will probably beat that 200 million goal with about a week to spare. so we're already doing that. the problem is that at 2.5 million shots per day we're still five months away from herd immunity if we're using 75% of the population as a goal. we've made great strides. about a third of the population, a third of the adult population has had at least one vaccination, and almost
