reiner, good to have you on.trials in other children a bit older, above 5, above the age of 12, the results have been great and there really haven't been any incidents of health problems here. where does this put the timeline on getting american children vaccinated? how soon can parents expect this to be available? >> right. so pfizer has already applied for an eua for adolescents. 12 to 15. and we should have that very, very soon. so that's great. so basically middle school and high school kids will be vaccinated this summer almost certainly. now the schallenge is to get th rest of the kids down to 6 months. i don't think we'll have that data until this fall. it's important to remember that little kids just aren't small adults. and it's crucial to understand what the right dose of the vaccine is for children. and the only way is to trial it. we're doing this the right way, safely, but some time this fall we'll be able to vaccinate probably children as young as 6 months. >> wow. that's incredible. i do want to as

jonathan reiner, cnn medical analyst for our nightly house call. thank you, sir. good to see you. his visit to a vaccination site today the president announcing he is moving up the date of eligibility for all adults to be vaccinated. how much is this going to help? >> it's going to help a lot. this is something we've been talking about for the last few weeks. the variants are infecting young people. you know, again, if you look at the data out of massachusetts over the last two weeks, about half of the people who have been infected are under 30. and these are largely people who have not been vaccinated. and moving this up to just a couple weeks from now will help get shots in those arms, and that's going to put this virus down. it's big news, and it's coming not a minute too soon. >> you know we're vaccinating people faster than ever with a seven-day average of 3 million doses. but the uk variant is now in all 50 states now, doctor. what does that mean in terms of how long this drags out? >> so the uk variant is more contagious. think about this. the mutation is in the spiked prot

jonathan reiner is with us. what do you think of this decision? >> i think it's the right decision.ne is a really effective vaccine, and it has a lot of benefits compared to the two mrna vaccines. it really easy to transport. it can remain in a refrigerator without deep freeze for months at a time and it's only a single shot so it really amplifies our ability to get vaccines into arms. the risk of thrombosis is low. the committee found 15 cases out of 8 million shots, that's about two shots -- two cases of thrombosis per million shots. so it's very, very safe. just to put this in prospective, the risk of thrombosis from covid-19 itself is about 16%. so many orders of magnitude are more likely to get a clot from the virus itself than from the vaccine. i think they made the right decision and adding a caution in the label allows providers to discuss this in detail with patients. >> absolutely. on the overall vaccine effort, doctor, republican senator ron johnson is sticking with his neck out once again questioning the public health push for everyone to get vaccinated. >> from my stand

jonathan reiner. some good news! yes! happy about that. good to see you.hey hope they can begin vaccinating kids for school next year. the numbers are really impressive. >> yeah. they really are. the bigger news about this is, the prospect of vaccinating kids because we can't get herd immune without vaccinating children. 23% of the population in the united states is composed of kids under the age of 18. so we can't get to herd immune without being able to vaccinate kids. this study which looked at over 2,000 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 showed that the vaccine produced really robust immune response and 100% efficacy at preventing symptomatic disease. so it works really well in this age group. we know they can certainly contract the virus and we know this age group spreads the virus very effectively so this is super good news. mind you, this vaccine, the pfizer vaccine, is already approved for teenagers 16 and older. so this will move it even lower. and the manufacturer already announced that they've begun enrolling very young children from six

jonathan reiner in the last hour. i think there's a real important part of this being missed, which is the reason it's too late to send more vaccine supplies to michigan -- and by the way, they have enough supply, that's not the problem, and the reason sending more vaccine won't help here is it takes about 14 days after you have received two doses of the pfizer and moderna vaccine before you are immune, and it takes 14 to 28 days after the johnson & johnson vaccine before you are immune. the incubation period, which is the time from when you are exposed to when you are infected with coronavirus is four to five days, so there's no way that a surge in vaccination is going to help curb this when the transmission is happening right now. the hard truth, and i understand the bind governor whitmer is in, and the hard truth is the only thing that will curb transmission right now are measures taking effect immediately, which is the masks, and not indoor dining and socializing outdoors, and she has received death threats for th

jonathan reiner. doctor, thank you. that was my -- the crowd applauding you here.anced crowd. i just spoke with michigan lieutenant governor garland gilchrist. what do you think about what is happening in michigan? >> it's just as you said. there's -- there is a big surge, and i think it's probably a combination of pandemic fatigue, you know, loosening of -- of people's guard. insufficient vaccination. but, you know, despite -- despite that, you know, there is -- there's good news to talk about. you know, what we are seeing now is, out at six months with the pfizer vaccine, really great data showing that, out at six months, the efficacy of the vaccine remains above 91%. with very robust protection against severe illness. and almost-100% protection/effectiveness against the south african variant. so, we are seeing, you know, very good data from the pfizer vaccine. and what this means is, with renewed vaccinations around this country. with -- with -- with renewed enthusiasm, we can get ahold of this pandemic. >> you know, there is -- i -- i put on social media, how i

jonathan reiner, cardiologist that advised under george w. bush.gh, erin. it doesn't really under score for americans is what the cdc knows, which is that these vaccines induce immunity. the cdc published data last week on 87 million fully vaccinated americans and out of that giant number, there are about 5,000 symptomatic infections. that's .005% and of that 87 million fully vaccinated americans, there was 75 deaths. that's .0009%. so if you are vaccinated in this country, you are effectively immune but these guidelines tell you to avoid crowded malls and restaurants. they haven't really gone far enough. they really need to tell americans that if you are vaccinated, you are immune. >> so let me ask you about this. they're balancing a risk here. you're making the argument you got to give people more freedom because those are the facts and people know that and if you don't tell them that, it will erode public trust in the cdc and government and that's bad and on the other hand, you give people more freedoms, we're not anywhere close to herd immunity

reiner pfizer's ceo says a third booster shot of their vaccine is likely needed in six to 12 months inhow will americans who are already vaccinated with pfizer know when it's time to go back for that additional shot? >> first of all, you know, we are used to having from time to time to get boosters for various vaccines. think of the flu shot. we get a new flu shot every year. i was interested if what albert borlis said because we haven't seen the data that suggests when we will need this. the six month data out shows robust immunity out six months. we will have 12 month data coming forward soon. the first trials went out about a year ago. we will have 12 month date soon. we have not seen any evidence that the efficacy of these vaccines is waning certainly within the first year. i think what he is really talking about is these vaccines are going the evolve to more critically focus on the variants. sometime next year there will be vaccines that will be more effective against the b.1.1.7 or the south african or any new variant. we should understand we have to learn how to live with this p
