s ed reinhold is leading the investigation. >> we're going to do an intense look at him to see what his connections are. we'll look at his friends family his association -- associates to determine the cause or the reason why he conducted this attack. >> reporter: officials will try to find out if abdulazeez was motivated or influenced by isis, the group that's been calling for lone wolf-style attacks in the u.s. on the military and police during the month of ramadan which ends tomorrow. over the july 4th holiday federal law enforcement officials warned of the potential for an attack. late today the dependent of homeland security called for increased security at certain federal facilities out of an abundance of caution. a week ago today f.b.i. director james comey said agents had made arrests to thwart july 4th attacks but also act knowledged that isis' thousands of followers on twitter and tracking them is a challenge. scott, abdulazeez had been stopped by local police. he was booked for a d.u.i. in april. >> pelley: jeff, thank you. we have just received word from the department of the

special agent in charge ed reinhold. >> these officers were under a tremendous amount of gunfire from this individual and yet they continued to move forward against this target and engage him and eliminate that threat, saving numerous lives throughout this community. >> reporter: abdulazeez's computers and other communication devices have been sent to the f.b.i. lab in quantico virginia. officials will see whether he had contact with isis or other terrorist groups. officials say he traveled to jordan last year and spent seven months overseas. investigators want to know who he met with and if any of his contacts attempted to radicalize him. investigators have discovered two blog posts attributed to abdulazeez. "this life is short and bitter," the author says. "the opportunity to submit to allah may pass you by." it was written just three days before the shooting. people who know him say abdulazeez seemed like a normal american kid. he was a wrestler in high school. in a yearbook posting he said his name made people take note of him. he wrote, "my name causes national security alerts. w

i think ed reinhold, the special agent in charge said a lot of things without crossing the line.his is an ongoing investigation. the fbi will be very thorough and very meticulous. he did talk about jordan and working with the jordanian officials. the fbi has a legal attache in jordan and they have a very close relationship with the jordanians so that will certainly be explored. of course the entire computer history and any connectivity he may have had including the downloading of the videos i would imagine at this point the bureau has gone through and done forensic images of any devices that they found at his residence when they conducted that search late last week and have gone through that combing for any connectivity both here domestically and internationally. so this will be a long investigation. you know when these things start out, it's really a 100-yard dash and everybody is running full guns. we're now at a point where we're about a week or ten days into this and it's now a long slow jog. cross country if you will and this is going to be ongoing for weeks or months and we

here is how ed reinhold the investigation agent in charge who is leading this investigation, here is checking every possible place that he could reside or could have resided, visited, where he's shopped, where he went to school who his friends were, feif he worked eded out at a gym, every possible lead. we have information he's been in various locations and we will check each and every one of those. >> carol, this investigation extends overseas as well. the government of kuwait this morning has put out a statement saying that yes, indeed he was born there. he was a jordanian citizen and he became a u.s. naturalized citizen. he did visit duekuwait in may of 2010 and a couple months later he crossed over to jordan where he had citizenship. we know u.s. investigators are talking to the jordanian intelligence jordanian authorities to figure out who he might have been associating with there. his friend in an interview with drew griffin last night said that he was there to teach, and so now the fbi wants to know who else was he meeting with there? did that change anything? did that lead to

special agent in charge, ed reinhold: >> f.b.i.are partnering with state and locals to run down every lead that we have received. as our team continues to develop additional information, you may see or hear about f.b.i. activity in other areas of the state and nation. >> sreenivasan: the four u.s. marines killed in the attacks were identified today as: gunnery sergeant thomas sullivan of massachusetts, a two-time purple heart recipient. lance corporal skip wells of georgia. staff sergeant david wyatt of north carolina. and sergeant carson holmquist of wisconsin. three other people were wounded. the kuwait-born shooter naturalized american citizen muhammad youssef abdulazeez, was shot and killed by police. the 24-year-old lived in nearby hixson, tennessee, and by all accounts, was not on federal law enforcement's radar. and, those who knew him were stunned. luke russell is a former high school classmate. >> it's crazy to hear about not only in your hometown, you never hear about it in your hometown, but to hear someone you went to s

what we don't know is motive and that's what this investigation involving, according to ed reinhold, the special agent in charge for the fbi for the knoxville division. was this a lone wolf? was this a person who midnight have been ex-military. the fbi suggesting he was not. who had some sort of grudge, or was this in fact an act of domestic terrorism? the investigation here, as you can imagine is in its infancy. a lot of pieces of string to pull on here, to try to first of all unravel who this person was though a good chance the authorities already know who he was. what was his motive be in learn about all we're going to learn from the federal and local authorities but there will be another press conference at 10:00 tonight at the a police facility a few blocks from here. so we'll stay on top of this and bring you everything we can find as soon as we find out. >> thank you, john. what are the authorities doing to determine what this person did what he did? on the phone, rod wheeler former d.c. homicide detective. what are the authorities doing right no-no determine motive. >> exactl

. >> later at a press conference the fbi special agent in charge ed reinhold was asked about that speculation from the congressman. he said he couldn't confirm it. >> at this time we have no indication that he was inspired by or directed by anyone other than himself. >> so pete i wonder if you can sort of parse that for us or take a shottate ateshot at it because the congressman is saying this is too much of a coincidence. this fits it to a tee. >> yes, there are people inside law enforcement who are saying the same thing and in the intelligence community as well. congressman mccaul was careful to sigh that was his own conclusion based merely on what is publicly known, and the fbi has said they're just not there yet in terms of the investigation. but you know i think one reason that they can't take their eyes off the terrorism possibility is the fact that this was -- these were military facilities that were attacked. one of the themes in isis social media repeatedly over the past six months is attack military facilities. just today the military has again tried to adjust to this. the marine co
