the point is in some cases, people who can get that a remedy for cases when they did not go to prison, there will be eligible to legally say -- some people, certain jobs, they are able to answer "no convictions" for certain jobs, but again, is a far cry from now even having to answer those questions. the problem with the laws in california are that they are very piecemeal. they were written over a long stretch of time. they do not really interact with each other very well, and did not do as much -- i feel like i am being so negative, so i'm going to try to think of something positive. they do sell certain people. a major problem we have is that for people who have gone to prison in california, for this cases for which they were sentenced, the only remedy is something called a certificate of rehabilitation, which is so far from expunge meant -- it is a gold star on your criminal record that you get to take around and show people. that would be my dream to work on that. the other option is pardon, and i think governor schwarzenegger has printed six, and not to my clients. >> nor mine. i

this comes in part of my teaching another subject which is remedies. now, there's a very strong ideal in remedies law which is that the wrongdoer, the person that causes the harm has to fix the harm. that's our ideal of justice. and it's an important one. but remedies also recognizes that that ideal cannot always be realized. to make a long story short, i think the situation in black america today is that the wrongdoer cannot fix what's broken and here i am talking about white society, the rest of us, those of us what have undeniably harmed black america through discrimination, persecution, slavery and the like. no, i think we're at the point where only the victim can cure himself. i have something in my book called "the parblee of a pedestrian" where i try to illustrate this insight. very briefly, a pedestrian is run over by a truck driver. he injuries his spine. he has to go to a rehab center and the truck driver and his company spay for his stay at the rehab center which is good enough. and the therapist says to the pedestrian, unless you make a hug
