depriving as governor rendell the other side of its main leverage. so on all of those levels it works for him and it accomplishes what he wants to, which is to level the playing field in terms of income inequality. >> governor, we're going to have senator patty murray on the show in just a few minutes. in terms of getting this done, what do you think the president needs at this point? does he have all the arrows that he needs to get the tax cuts extended for the middle class and to expire for the upper income? >> he does if he's willing to use them. the part of this, the danger in this appeal, is that sometimes the president's going to have to go back to the same people that he's gining up here and saying you're going to take it a hit. the only way we will get this done. look, i think republicans are softening on increasing revenue, maybe voting for rates but only do it with significant spending cuts, particularly entitlements. it's going to be a quid pro quo. patty murray has to understand that, chuck schumer, all of our progressives and our party h

governor rendell, nbc news called pennsylvania too early to call but the president has the lead.ing that you hear out of your former state? >> the enthusiasm gap does not exist in pennsylvania. governor romney is turning out high turnouts in the red counties but in the president's base the turnout is off the charts. it may surpass 2008 turnout and that means in philadelphia, for example, the president carried by 478,000 votes in '08. he may beat that total and there aren't enough votes in the rest of the state to counteract that. >> senator, what are your thoughts on what we have learned so far and in particular looking at the house and senate races going on right now. how would you look at the balance of power and what that means in terms of compromise? >> it looks like the house will stay republican. the senate also looks like it will probably stay democratic if we were to have a close race and lose for example indiana and missouri, two seats we probably should have won. now indiana is not over yet. it's a close race. you can't make up that type of a step backwards. i suspect t

los angeles mayor, ed rendell, congressman steve latuorette of ohio. what's important in that decision? >> you mentioned infrastructure. that's a critical part of this job. which is really selling the infrastructure proposals. we have lost sight of it, but we still have work to do on jobs and infrastructure is key in the president's agenda. so he needs someone who can make the case around the country. stepping back we need to look at the diversity in the cabinet and make sure there's representation of what america looks like. in a sense, stronger numbers amongst latinos and african-americans than many people expected. as you look at the entire cabinet, the white house will also look at diversity. but i don't know all of those candidates actually have a lot going for them. >> we only have a few seconds left but toif ask you about treasury secretary. nobody sleep when is you're in the cabinet but timothy geithner probably got less sleep than most people given the economic circumstances right now. talk to me about who could replace timothy geithner or wha
