but renamed it reno. the town now named reno was surprisingly would not find prosperity directly from gold or silver. the town was a hub catering for teamsters or gamblers all passing through on their way to the mines. incorporated as a city in 1893, reno was the rail center for the central pacific railroad. nobody knew prosperity was right around the corner. that was an empty promise for most of the country during the -- during the great depression. but for reno it would come rolling in the day they legalized gambling in nevada. gambling had been in the shadows of legality for 60 years. but this new development brought jackpot tables out into the light of the day. it was a proper gate way to the new honky tonk strip of shoulder to shoulder, neon noise and all day drinking. they shook the morals and a few more a dollars from the pockets of americans. they made it even easier to get a divorce. now a prospective divorcee only had to live in nevada for eight days. >> people came with pockets full of money an

labor day weekend is right around the corner and is huge for lake tahoe and reno. thousands head to the sierra for the weekend. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is with us. i talked to people with lake tahoe plans on hold. >> it is something that is going to be slow to clear out. we want things to work out for the weekend but in this case it is unlikely going to happen. take a look at this from nasa. it is a snapshot from space. it is what we call the visible satellite. look at the smoke plumes lifting up from the north from the epicenter of the fire. the smoke is lifting up as high as 25 feet in the atmosphere and being carried up in the upper level pattern. it is like in the airplane and you get the tail wind because the wind is so strong. obviously that smoke having no problem reaching as far north as lake tahoe and portions of reno. 187,000 acres have burned as we have mentioned and that is pushing that smoke here continually across tahoe and reno. right now unhealthy levels of air quality. it looks like at this point from our projections the smoke will stay at

now as we get a look at that smoke plume again, we saw the video from reno and lake tahoe. here's another look at this as this smoke has traveled at least 200 miles off to the north. at this point there is nothing indicate thad that smoke will be heading towards the bay area. and also something else of note. we've seen these billowing and towering clouds. some 30 to 35,000 feet up, you guys. it's creating its own cloud form. they're called pie row cumulus. take a look and check that out. you're going to learn more about these fire clouds and how they create their own storm for firefighters that make it so unpredictable. >>> well, your water is safe. that was a message to people concerned about the rim fire's affect on the water supply. while ash may be falling on the surface of the reservoir, the water that ends up in the bay area is drawn from a depth of 270 feet, which has very little contamination. the concern stems from the fact that water is not filtered and that's why particular lantz matter is being closely monitored. >> right now it's at .2. so it's well below the f

christina loren has new details on the air quality around lake tahoe and reno. good morning. >> let me step out of the way here as a picture does tell a thousand words in this case. you can see that robust smoke plume. let me give you an idea where the bay area stands versus nevada. according to the daily tribune, smoke envoled lake tahoe, the surrounding area into reno, causing air quality to decline. our concern is a lot of people like to hit lake tahoe for labor day weekend, one last summer hurrah. it's not the same experience that you would normally expect this time of year with all of the smoke moving in. we are urging people to rethink those plans. now coming up, i'm going to show you, we might get more showers. showers over the fire yesterday, very light. today a better chance for seeing shower activity heavy at times over the rim fire. that's coming up. a close look at your local forecast. it's that time when people are making plans and it's not the best year to visit lake tahoe. back to you. >> now to another fire that we're covering today. several fami
