on the republican side, though, the likely republican presidential nominee, donald trump, he will not be on the ballot in the nevada primary tomorrow. his opponent nikki haley will be, but trump will not. trump will be on the ballot later this week for a nevada republican party caucus which is going to take place on thursday. in the caucus on thursday, nikk haley will not be on the ballot. now, does this make any sense at all to the average nevada republican voter? a no, it does not. because it can't make sense to anyone because it doesn't make sense objectively. but the leadership of the nevada republican party frankly is -- you have a little empathy. they're distracted. they're under indictment. the state republican party chairman goes on trial less than a month from now along with five other leading nevada republicans for having signed their names to fraudulent electoral vote certificates and putting themselves forward as fake electors for trump, even though trump lost the state of nevada to president biden by a lot in 2020. to try to make sure that no republican candidate would ha

i mean, that republicans that had concerns, aired those concerns in their meeting, in the republican conference meeting this morning. there was talk all day about the fact that republicans may not have the votes for this sham and very political impeachment. and yet the house speaker decided to bring it to the floor anyway, believing that he and marjorie taylor greene could bully their colleagues into submission. and thankfully, the three who voted against this impeachment held firm to their principles even when others in the party who didn't agree with this strategy folded. these three held to their principles. and as a result it was a spectacular failure on the part of the speaker of the house, on the part of the house gop, and i hope the american people see over and over and over again that the republican party is unwilling to govern. they are uninterested in addressing our great challenges head on. and they are far more interested in political performance. >> i do think it's important to note, though, that this is expected to be a short-lived victory for democrats because as melan

in 2004, when republican president george w. bush was up for re-election, the republican party and the bush campaign enthusiastically promoted bans on same-sex marriage in multiple states. they expected anti-gay campaigning in as many states as possible would boost republican turnout and help bush's chances of being re-elected. demonize gay people, scare people about gay rights. you get conservative voters to turn out and they'll vote republican while they're there. bush was re-elected in 2004. those anti-gay state ballot initiatives may have helped with that. but then two years after bush left the white house, the man who had been chairman of the bush campaign at that time came out himself as gay. and to his credit, he set about trying to right the wrong he had been part of by persuading leading republicans to change their mind on marriage equality and to persuade the supreme court to support marriage equality, which they have done at least for a while. but honestly, it's like you can't swing a cat without hitting one of these

i am a lifelong republican. i would say that mitch mcconnell, given the different segments of the caucus, along with the presidency of donald trump, through all of that in an effective way, i give him major credit and always have, for a very difficult job. i thought that it was good that we do not have merit garland on the bench. nobody knows what the ultimate result there be. but it has become politicized in a way that we did not see when dwight eisenhower was president. certainly, that includes nominees proposed by joe biden. as far as sticking to the subject, i feels very strongly that longevity of service, in and of itself suggests that mitch mcconnell certainly did a few things that perpetuated his continued existence in that station. i do not look to him as a shining light that will -- we will forever remember, but as far as his ability to work with both sides, to the extent that he could, it was a very difficult role of the dice. he deserves significant credit for that. it is time to move on. host: robert
